The 1991 remake of Dark Shadows (popularly known as "The Revival Series") is, in many ways, more popular than the original. Short lived, because it was essentially knocked off the air by the start of the Gulf War, it nevertheless has many fans.

TVTome.com (which is, by-the-way, a terrific resource for episode guides and other information about your favorite shows) has pursued the issue of getting this series on DVD. "Darko", the TVTome editor for this show and 20 others, posted the following at TV Tome's Dark Shadow (1991) listing: (http://www.tvtome.com/DarkShadows_1991/)

Editor's note:

It hasn't been officially annouced, but I emailed MPI Home Video and asked if they would release The Revival Series on DVD, since they are releasing the original show on DVD.

They said they are likely to release it on DVD after they release all of the original show.

Good word there, Darko, and we appreciate the info: it's kind of thin, but it's a cause for optimism. Also, thank you for mentioning our site there! Finally, deepest thanks to Dark Shadows fan Stephanie Lambert for bringing this to our attention.

MPI is pretty much following the outline they did for the VHS releases - first they're releasing the Jonathan Frid episodes of the original series (#210 - 1245), then the pre-Jonathan Frid episodes (#001 - 209), and then finally the 1991 revival series.

I disagree with TVShowsOnDVD.com about the revival being more popular than the original series. I haven't seen that many DS91 fans online that liked the revival better then the original. *shrug* Oh well. Different strokes for different folks.

i never saw DS until may of '95. been watching it since.
but there was a day in '91 when NBC showed it on a sunday afternoon because of primetime premption. i watched a bit of it. i did not know what i was watching. as i had never seen the original at the time, i had nothing to compare it with or any working knowledge of either one other than a vampire.
i gave up on it after an hour or so. just didn't care for it. maybe if i tried top watch it now, i may see it differently. but i wouldn't bet on it, being as i usually do not like remakes or up to date versions of already established themes.
but i would at least give it a chance.
