Ok, I am just wondering about this...I have heard that after Shirley left the show, it was retitled "Laverne". I have never seen this in effect in an actual episode, and I've never seen any evidence that this actually was the case...does anyone know for sure?

"Laverne and Shirley" was called "Laverne and Shirley" even after Cindy Williams left. It was never called "Laverne".

It was rumored the title was going to change to "Laverne & Friends," but it never happened.

However, the show was retitled briefly when it first aired in syndication...it had the unwieldy title "Laverne & Shirley & Company."

For some reason, Garry Marshall's sitcoms were retitled for their initial syndication runs...Happy Days became Happy Days Again. I'm curious as to what the reason was for the retitling...

It was done to distinguish the difference between the syndicated shows and the primetime show which was still airing when these shows went into syndication.

Good point. But those were the only shows doing that. M*A*S*H also went into syndication around the same time, but didn't change its title.

I'm just glad they eventually reverted to the original titles.

And they don't bother doing that with shows now, for that matter.

And they don't bother doing that with shows now, for that matter. It is strange. When CHIPS first went into syndication it was titled CHIPS Patrol. Luckily they don't do that anymore.

Imagine what titles they'd come up with today...

Friends Forever... Friends
Everybody Loves Raymond And Company
The King Of Queens And Friends
Will And Grace And Company

and so on, and so on...

There used to be a lot of concern on the part of network executives that viewers would be confused if reruns of a show from past seasons aired when the show was still running in prime time (like we wouldn't have been able to figure out where to find the new shows!). Many producers simply kept their shows out of syndication until the network run was complete. For those shows that did get rerun, whether in syndication or on a network's morning schedule, retitling wasn't uncommon, in order to differentiate from the prime-time run. The retitling of HD and L&S was a remnant of that thinking.
