I know this might offend some people here on this fan board, but I believe being a true fan is all about seeing the positives and negatives of everything. So, with that said, I was just wondering...does anyone here really not care for Julia, or did she start to get under your skin after a while? I mean, sure she was great telling people off at first, but after a while, it just got to me and she seemed to turn into a b*tch...don't get me wrong, to this day I still say people confronting others are pulling a 'Julia Sugarbaker', but in the end it did get old...anyone else concur?

The one with her and Wilson Brickett I almost can't watch. I agree with you to a large extent, but she WAS funny sometimes. Hypocrite though she was, she was funny. Especially in her sarcmsm toward Suzanne;

Suzanne: Julia, are you accusing me of being a "Miss Valdosta Feed and Grain"?

Julia: I had always hoped it wouldn't come to this, but...

Suzanne: :eek2:

Lol.

Yeah, I agree that she could be funny. After Delta left though, that's when it started to get old...she just seemed to be bitchy to everyone...

I haven't really seen a full episode without Suzanne and Charlene. I just can't stand to watch them because Suzanne and Charlene were so funny.

Yeah...but it was good Delta left because they were having problems with their friendship. Julia never got old until Charlene and Suzanne left. The show just sucked after that.

I read an article in TV Guide several years ago that although Dixie Carter did not share the same opinions and political views as Julia she agreed to do it. The reason being that she had a deal with the writers Harry and Linda Thomason that she would do these scenes if she were allowed to sing on the show. What Julia really was , was a mouthpiece for Linda Bloodworth Thomason. Like it or not Dixie did a fabulous job in that part! But it did get on my nerves sometimes!

 Dixie Carter isn't a Liberal? Sweet. She played that part so well, I thought she was one in real life, lol. I hope her real-life views on Pornography agreed with Julia Sugarbaker's.

Her sarcasm can be funny and make me laugh quite a bit, but yeah, it gets to be old after a while.

I like Julia, but sometimes I think she oversteps the "mean" line a bit---then I feel a li'l cold toward her until she makes me laugh again (lol).

Like in "The Emperor's New Nose", when this happens:

Suzanne: "It's just that...lookin' at her reminds me of Noel!" *tears up*

Charlene (sympathetic): "Oohh, you're missin' your pig, aren't you?"

Suzanne (crying): "Yes!"

Julia (looking stern): Suzanne! We do not have time to be thinkin' about your runaway pig!"

I mean, c'mon---her pet just ran away, show the lady some sympathy! Yeah, that's not the issue at hand, but still, I think Charlene was right---Suzanne has feelings too, Julia!

So yeah, I like Julia, and she can be hysterical, but it's the li'l moments like that that grind on me.

Even though her rants got old, she never seemed to miss a beat with her lines, and all that memorization is HARD! I never could have done it, so at least kudos to her for that!

They got a little carried away with her sometimes. I mean make your point and get it over with. But i usually liked her.

Julia speaks her Mind that is her personality! Although it got on my last nerves particulary in the last few seasons. Suzanne and BJ were better able to counter Julia's outbursts. Allison was torn to shreds by Julia

It seemed that Julia got to Mary Jo as well. There was one episode in the final season where Mary Jo finally let Julia have it after years of listening to her long-winded school marmish opinions. Wow! Talk about some pent-up tension. You didn;t really expect that from Mary Jo, which is what made it a good scene.

Julia is my all-time favorite character, and there is nothing I enjoy more than to just sit back and watch her verbally kick the arse of some idjit with one of her "terminator tirades"-- but there was one episode in particular where she just kinda got to me. The way Julia behaved in "Julia Drives Over the First Ammendment" irked me because to me it seemed erratic as well as completely futile. I couldn't have agreed more with her and the other girls with their views on the whole pornography issue... But to keep driving over that sign when you know you're going to be fined, incarcerated, and on the way to bankruptcy (being charged like 10 mil) -and knowing what you're doing isn't going to matter diddley--well to me that all seems a little extravagant don't you think? lol I mean even for Julia I think that time she was pushing it...and her homegirls felt the same way. So yeah. lol But other than that I worship this girl. I wish I could be as strong and glib as she is. *le sigh*

I loved it when Julia went there. When she gets on the warpath especially putting someone in their place she does with a rhythm and pace that holds your attention. There were times I stood up and applauded after she went there. Dixie Carter always plays those dominant type characters and does a great job at it.

I see that Delta Burke is launching a bunch of her wardrobe items on eBay.
Look for them at www.AuctionValet.com.

I always loved Julia! I just loved the way she could tell people off and do it in a way that holds your attention. But, there were a few times when I thought she went overboard with it and instead of just telling someone off and puting them in their place she just got really rude with them. I think it was rude of her to say "we don't have time to be thinking about your run away pig". Susanne acted like that pig was her child and she'd just lost it and was upset. Sure, there were other important matters at hand, but that was her sister and she was upset and she should have been more considerate then that at least for a couple minutes. But, other then that I really liked Julia and the way she could tell people off and speak her mind.

Some of my favorite scenes in the series were when Julia would really give someone who deserved it a real dressing-down. She could be a bit superior-acting when she got on her high horse sometimes, which could definitely be annoying...

In the episode "Killing All the Right People" Julia gave that woman the business when she made that statement how AIDS was killing off the right people. I stood up and applauded the other night when I saw that episode.

Dixie Carter can play those domineering outspoken characters very well. On her short stint on Different Strokes she played a domineering character.

^ She does play that type of character very well. She played Orson's mother on Desperate Housewives and she was domineering in that role too. I think she's a very good actress to be able to do that.

I loved when Julia would just tell somebody off. I wish I had her confidence. She never worries what people will think or anything, she just says what's on her mind. I can see where people might think she crosses the line a bit, but that's who she is. I think as far as her behavior toward Suzanne, she kind of lost patience with her a bit. You have to remember that she's known Suzanne longer than the others have, and I'm sure she got kind of tired of Suzanne always whining about her own problems and such.

Anyway, that's just my two cents. :)

I never grew tired of her tirades....even though I disagreed with almost all of them.

My favorite was the lady in the episode about them doing the funeral for the gay young man with Aids....something about if God were passing out diseases as punishments for sins she'd be at the free clinic ALL the time!

I loved that scene!!

Julia never really got on my mind - I thought she was hysterical. What made it even more hilarious is the fact that Dixie Carter is a sweet, soft-spoken, Republican woman who rarely agreed with the points that Julia tried to make.

The only thing that gets to me about Julia - and I find it more funny than annoying - is that she was so eloquent end educated in her Terminator Tirades, yet sometimes she didn't realize how far she was going and what the consequences were going to be.

Julia toned down a bit after Suzanne and Charlene left, and she hardly went off on any rants. Granted, she told off Allison millions of times, but she became even closer to Mary Jo than she had been in the previous seasons (probably because Annie Potts was the only one left from the original cast, other than Meshach and the occasional appearance from Alice Ghostley), was very sweet towards Carlene, and rarely had a beef with BJ.

Agreed, the last two seasons, Julia was VERY annoying and sanctimonious. Heck, Mary Jo was just as bad.

Why is everyone so afraid of a stong minded opinionated women?* Don't get me wrong, I loved Suzanne (Delta Burke), but let's face it if Julia had been the character to leave the show it would have been game over.* Julia was the glue that held the show together.* I absolutely loved that she gave women a voice on many issues.* This type of commentary in a sitcom is lacking today.* I would like to personally thank Linda for addressing very important issues facing women all over America.* The explosion of porn in our society, especially via the internet, has hit an all time high.* The exploitation of women as sex slaves has also hit an all time high. These are real issues affecting real people and it sadden's me to think that there is no voice like Julia's out there bringing it to the pulics attention in such an entertaining way.* She never got on my nevers.* However, this brings up a good point, maybe the reason she got on your nevers is because she hit a nerve that you feel uncomfortable about!!* For example, maybe an issue you support (such as porn) that makes you feel guilty in some way?* Just an observation. Signing out and stepping off my soap box now.**

P.S. I was disappointed to hear Dixie is a Republican.

Yes... this was one of Julia's BEST rants. Mary Jo's speach at the school was also great. This was a very, very good episode. One of my favorites for sure.

While I loved Julia Sugarbaker, I can't say that I agree with her being the glue that held the show together. The four of them were great TOGETHER. I stopped watching the show after Suzanne and Charlene left. To me, they tried to compensate the loss of the humor given by those two by making Julia and Mary Jo the silly-funny ones. It was totally out of character for them and it made the show unbearable to watch, IMO. One episode in particular was the one where Julia and Mary Jo got stuck in some guys bedroom and they hid under the bed while he and another woman made out. Licking jelly from tiny jars from a jelly of the month club found in the bedroom because they were stuck so long and hungry... just the way they acted, the scenario, the way they talked... it just irked me. The whole thing was just completely out of character for them and something more along the lines that Suzanne and Charlene would get stuck in. I couldn't even tell you the name of the episode or much more detail about it because to me, the show just lost it's appeal after Suzanne and Charlene left. They tried to make Julia and Mary Jo something they were not to make up for the loss of Suzanne and Charlene. IMO, it didn't work.

I could not agree more, And I LOVED Julia. Her character justed changed too much for my taste. Mary Jo became annoying the last two seasons as well... what I could watch of them, anyway.

Does anybody agree that worst part about the latter episodes is that the writers became self conscious of Julia's rants and tried to cram one in to every episode? They ended up having her rant about random things.

In hindsight, the Julia Sugarbaker character does tend to come across as a judgmental know-it-all. For example, in the episode about AIDS, after they say their PSA lines about how HIV is and isn't transmitted, Julia does a mini rant about how Hollywood was going to stop glamorizing promiscuity because of AIDS. And then she says something very smug and judgmental about how not sleeping around is the classy thing to do.

If something like this aired today, then it would be easier to go online and accuse Julia of "shut shaming" and virtue signalling with her decidedly smug moralizing.

Sadly, after Suzanne and Charlene left, Julia no longer was a character, but became a caricature.

Can you share what quotes you mean regarding the episode you're talking about? (season 2's "Killing All the Right People"). I don't recall Julia seeming judgmental about anything there. In fact, fans love Julia for throwing Alma Jean out of Sugarbaker's.
