I hate being a supermarket cashier!!! :livid: :angryfire :cuss: People are so rude, unreasonable, demanding, or just plain :censored: Some things I wish people at the grocery store would remember:

#1. The express line is for people who have less than 10 items. If you have more than 10 items, do NOT come into this line. Multiple numbers of the same item do not count at one item.

#2. If the cashier says the register is closing, then don't demand that he/she take you anyway. The cahsier is going on a much-needed break. You'll just have to wait a couple of minutes in another line.

#3. Don't complain about my speed. I am not Superman; I am only human. I go as fast as I can without making a mistake.

#4. If there is a price discrepancy, there is no need to go yelling at the cashier and say he/she is ripping you off. It is an honest mistake. We're not perfect. Just kindly point the mistake out and it will be fixed.

#5.Please don't throw a few items on the counter, then run off and get something else. The lines are "first come, first serve". Don't try to save a space in line. Also, don't cut in line.

#6. Make sure you have your method of payment ready before the cashier is finished ringing your order so you don't hold up the line. Also, make sure you actually HAVE your wallet or purse with you before you get in line.

#7. Don't allow your young children to run around and make a mess and bother other customers please, If you can't control them while you're shopping, leave them at home.

#8. Don't go complaining about the prices, the crowd, the weather, etc. I have no control over that stuff and I don't wish to hear your complaints.

#9. If you take an item you decide you don't want, either put it back yourself or ask an employee too. Don't leave it out in the shelves, especially if it is a perishable food item.

#10. "Sampling" is still stealing, even if you don't leave the store. Pay for it!

<phew!> I feel a little better now. I write that as both a cashier and a customer. Rude, inconsiderate people piss me off!

Me too. Sometimes to the point of considerable anger, but I'm afraid that lack of consideration or empathy for others is extremely common. What gets me is people in movie theaters who talk continuously through a whole movie. Once in awhile I'll tell them to be quiet, but more usually I get up and move, muttering insults.

I cashiered at Walmart for almost 10 years.

NEVER again will I work in such a position.

I have been yelled at, hit, threatened, smacked, spit on, hit on, pushed and stolen from.

The job I have now is completely different, does not require work with the public and I LOVE it.

I will never, not ever in my life, work in a position such as this again.

FOR ALL of the reasons you mentioned above


I hated that people would shop in that store for an hour or more and then bitch about standing in line for 10 minutes.

Never again.

I wish you luck in finding a job that you would love as much as I love mine now.

I have problems with the above every day. My boss told me that Family Dollar attracts a lot of shitheads, and she was right.

i hate my job. i hate being a hostess. i hate how when you try and seat someone they are like "why cant i sit over there, we would like to sit in that booth" and that screws every :censored: thing up. why cant they just :censored: sit where i put them.

I feel your pain, Snoopy;) , I used to work as a bagger in a grocery store.
I especially loved it when I would bag up a crotchety older person's 5 grocery items in two bags, only to have them tell me that it's still too heavy for them to carry, so I'd practically have to put each item in a separate bag.
I really didn't mind doing this if they asked me nice, but alot of them were just sooo cranky and mean. :mad:

Poor Snoopy. That's just awful. I've worked with the public before, and I never will again because I really hate people. Kidding, sort of.
Some people take out their frustrations and miserable lives on people that work for the public. It's a bad bad thing.

I can relate to that one! I work in a deli at a grocery store and the only plus side really is I don't have to handle any money. All the customers pay for everything at the cashiers. Anyways, when we get busy and there's only like 2 or 3 deli workers people have to wait for their turn! We have a thing for people to take a number and when we call their number we'll wait on them. I always say that, too, I'm not superman and we don't have 10 arms! It's like the people think that we can magically wait on 5 customers at a time. Each worker can only wait on ONE customer at a time.

And don't even get me start on the old geezers! Most of the customers are like over 75 years old and talk about being PICKY and STUBBORN! One time a lady told me to tell the bakery lady that the "Cherry Pie was just horrible! the cherries were all sour!". Um, obviously, I couldn't tell the baker that the lady thought her pie was bad! :(

I feel your pain I worked at Walmart (vomit) for 3 months and it was the worst 3 months of my life and I have panic attacks because of it.

I worked retail throughout High School and College, and i would never do it again.

My favorite thing a "customer" would do was to arrive at the store two minutes before closing. "I just have to get one thing!" They would plead. Of course, that one thing turned out to be a pair of ice skates and a new wardrobe for each of the three kids with her, and since they are now the only people in the store, they think they can now browse for the next thirty minutes, totally ignoring the clock and the tired salespeolpe who just want to get the Hell out of there.

I often told the manager that this store would be a great place to work - if it weren't for the costomers.

That is why I never want to be a cashier! When I worked retail, I was a night stocker ( no customers to deal with ), even though one of my supevisor's was a jerk, it was better than cashiering. I really feel for you!

And also, even though I dont have a job, i feel that its wrong for the general public to think that the employees at places are your slaves. Just because they're supposed to give you service, that doesnt mean you can be rude to them.

I was threatened at the service desk because I would not take back a helium balloon tank that had been USED and emptied. The guy was mad that it was EMPTY and he told me that if I did not take it back he would make sure that I was not able to deny anyone else ever a chance to return something.


Smacked on the back by a customer at Christmas because she was FURIOUS that the lines were so long. HELLO?! Christmas = BUSY LINES. I left work that day because I was so upset.

Spit on, literally, by a woman because her check was logged as a bad check by one of the companies who handles NSF checks. They are automatically put into the system if normal attempts to collect aren't successful. A guy had a MOUTHFUL of change (pennies, dimes, etc) and when I told him his total he pulled it out of his mouth and PUT IT IN MY HAND. I almost vomited on the spot. Another guy had a huge mouthful of chew and was dribbling spit all over my register counter.

Do people realize how gross it is to put money in a sweaty sock and then pull it out and hand it right to the cashier?

And don't even get me started on the CSM (Customer Service Managers) who are "over" the cashiers. They are the women/men in red at the front end. I dont know what I enjoyed more - being 28 years old and having to ASK if I can pee, being in the bathroom with oh...diahreah and having them COME IN AND TELL ME TO HURRY UP, being told to take a break 45 minutes into my 9 hour shift or any of the other myriad of **** they put cashiers through.

My job now is so relaxed, so laid back. I can wear sweats, shorts, boxers, sleeping pants - anything I want. Roll out of bed and go. No makeup, no mess, no fuss. If I have to pee by god I pee. if I have the trots I can spend an hour in the bathroom and no one tracks me down. Need a day off? I can call THAT MORNING and say hey, I wont be in today. Need to leave early? I can punch out and go. My boss is fantastic (she's now my best friend), incredibly patient and so much fun to work with.

I could not ask for a better job (except that I get paid **** and can barely make ends meet) under most circumstances but after working in the hell hole called Walmart for as long as I did I feel like I'm working in a palace and IM the queen.

Never again will I work in retail or in the public.

We're with you Snoopy! I worked a job with the public for awhile. It's so frustrating because of all the things you said. Then, to top it off, the business owners who are well aware of the horror, the horror, expect you to take the brunt of it with a smile on your face. It was disenchanting to see what selfish mememememe jerks people can be. You can't help but wonder, is my grandma like that? My friends, my ...?:wave:

I worked as a MANAGER in a pet supply store for 9 years and on one occasion a lady actually THREW her 8 POUND bag of cat food at me! I THREW HER out of the store. :D

I agree. Working for the public sucks. They treat us like slaves or worse. I've also been threatened and hit and spat on. I can't wait until I finally find a new job.

I also can't stand the customers who seem to mistake us for the bank.

I had a woman tonight who came into my line just at closing time. She paid for a small order with a $20 bill. Her change came to just over $10. I did not have any $10 or $5 bills left in my drawer, so I had to give her 10 $1 bills. She was so rude about it! I tried to explain to the shrew that the night was over and I couldn't trade it and she flew into a rage and refused to leave until I traded it. Luckily, another cashier was still open and could trade a $10 bill for the 10 singles. The woman thanked her and said that she should have gotten in HER line instead. I muttered under my breath that she should have. Tonight was so bad!

Snoopy my suggestion to you would be to go immediately and start looking for a new job. If you are as unhappy as I was at Walmart than almost anything will be a better change for you.

When you get to the point where you want to cry before you go to work, that you cry AT work, and then cry when you get home it's time for a change.

I am currently in the process of looking for a new job. I'm looking to be a teacher's aide or something along that line. I haven't had much luck yet though.

Thank You! My thoughts exactly. Ugh I deal with that crap almost everyday and I hate it! Yesterday (Sunday) was so bad. Some lady wanted paper and she had like maybe 10 items and she started telling me what order to put things in the bag. I mean WTF!? I've been doing this for a little over a year now and I have never had any complaints from customers before.

Also we are so understaffed right now that it's unbelievable. Yesterday for 6 hours it was just me and one other sacker and like 2 cashiers. The store I work at is constantly busy so when you have only 4 people it gets crazier then it should. Working with people suck!:mad:

I feel your pain. My dad and stepmom work together in retail - that is, they both co-own and co-operate a HUGE party supply store, Paper Universal (formerly Paper Warehouse) - I don't know if you guys get that party supply store where you live. So far, I've only seen it in the Midwest so it may just be a Midwest thing. Add on to that, one of my stepaunts works at a Paper Warehouse where she lives, and another stepaunt and her husband have the same kind deal like my dad and stepmom - they both co-own and co-operate their Paper Warehouse where they live. You wouldn't believe some of the stories they all tell me...Wait, you CAN believe it. It's retail, what did you expect? :lol: I often help my dad out with stuff for his store, so I'm not in the least bit surprised. This past weekend, I was on vacation with the rest of my stepfamily and the stepaunt that co-owns/operates her PW store was there. We were having a discussion on Saturday night about bathrooms, and my stepaunt was telling everybody that was in the room about how, not too long ago, this one mom came into her store with a boy (I would guess 6-8 years old, she didn't say). While they were there, the boy literally stopped in the middle of her store and took a dump on the floor! I am not kidding.

For a really good website that trashes the h*ll out of customers like those, I suggest www.customerssuck.com - be warned, though, some of the stories are gross, but you'll get sooooo many laughs out of it! And there's a ton of stories, too. It should make you feel so much better afterwards, knowing you're not the only one out there that has to work in retail and deal with nasty, freaky or strange people. :)

God I wish someone had given me the advice earlier to find a new job as soon as possible before I started mine. Also, yes, it does help telling them to go f*** themselves in my mind along with a bunch of other names too.
