View Full Version : "I Love Lucy" and "The Nanny"
CBSrulz 07-24-2003, 01:14 PM OK well, many people refer to "The Nanny" as the "I Love Lucy" of the 90's? But how? I mean sure Fran acts like Lucy alittle bit and theres Val who acts like a Ethel. And then Mr. Schelfeled?? I gusse his the Ricky? Always mad at her and hes from another country?? But everything else just doesnt fit???? What do yall think?
CBSrulz 07-24-2003, 01:15 PM And dont get me wrong I like "The Nanny" 2!
SPLAIN 07-24-2003, 02:53 PM A very pale imitation!
Cashodeen 07-25-2003, 01:10 AM Well all parts of the shows aren't meant to fit exactly, so you got the gist of the "comparison" by naming those three characters. I've heard the same thing, but I for one, think it's ridiculous. SPLAIN is right!
By the way, I noticed on the list of Birthdays, your name was up. Hope you had a :birthday: SPLAIN!
SPLAIN 07-25-2003, 04:08 PM Why thanks, that was so nice of you, i certainly never expected that here, you guys have a list?, that is so much better that way, so as to not forget anybody, thanks again, i had a blast since i have so many friends on so many boards!
Cashodeen 07-25-2003, 07:05 PM On the "chit chat" board it's a tradition to wish people a happy birthday. I always wondered how people were able to know when someone's birthday was, and I finally found the list on this link:
http://www.sitcomsonline.com/boards/index.php
So the first day I went there I saw your name listed. Summers birthdays are the best by far! :)
I have never heard that this was the "90s Lucy" and I don't see any resemblance...
Mickey 07-27-2003, 05:23 AM I've never seen The Nanny, so I can't comment, but I sometimes wonder about Will And Grace. There's obviously no plot similarity to ILL, but Grace sometimes seems to be trying an out and out impression of Lucy. Sometimes it works, and... sometimes it really, really doesn't! :) She's a bottle red head though, and her behaviour is reminiscent of Lucy's at times.

Wow, do I feel insulted. I absolutely hate The Nanny. I can not stand her at all especially her voice. Her voice is NOTHING like Lucy Ricardo's as far as I am concerned. And the thought of even thinking that "The Nanny" is a 90's "I Love Lucy" just causes quivers to go down my spine.
Just Popped In 08-21-2003, 09:57 PM I've only seen The Nanny breifly. It was OK, but certainly in no way an updated version of I Love Lucy.

I agree. I can never get past that annoying laugh.
*ShortCake* 08-22-2003, 09:07 AM I LOVE this show... Fran Drescher is a big Lucy fan.. shes so cool!!! I dont hink its the I love Lucy of the 90s though.
SPLAIN 08-22-2003, 12:57 PM I don't think anybody thinks that, it's a little similar, but that's it! And i love Fran BECAUSE she's a Lucy fan, and i feel sorry for her having just almost died of cancer because of some stupid doctors.

omg i didnt know that!! Poor Fran!! :( She looks like shes one of the nicest people ever too!!
SPLAIN 08-22-2003, 01:05 PM You didn't know about her recent book CANCER SCHMANCER? In it she tells te story of the ordeal she went through, she divorced, her dog died, her career dried up and she felt sick and the doctors couldn't tell what was wrong with her, so they did not treat her, she was the one who insisted on getting a test that saved her life. She is now a cancer survivor and i hope she makes it to the five year period they say it takes to prove you are really cancer free. She has a new dog, i think she's still friendly with her ex husband and she is doing a commercial on TV lately. She helped promote the book on talk shows, but you must have been out riding your horse.

i actually became fan of hers a few weeks ago... ive been watching The Nanny reruns on lifetime everyday on the tv on my computer at work.. lol so i dont know too much about her!!! I hope she makes it to the 5 year point too. *crosses fingers for her*
SPLAIN 08-22-2003, 01:22 PM Well, at least that's better than the first time i heard Amy say she'd only been a fan of Lucy's for the past few years, what the heck did she watch as a child besides Republican conventions? LOL!

LOL!!! Well I can safely say I have been a Lucy fan since i was 8 and I am now 20.. almost 21 so I am safe there!!!
SPLAIN 08-22-2003, 01:32 PM Lucy should have gotten some kind of award for being the world's best babysitter. I was five! So that's 48 years for me! Maybe i can make it to Jamestown for my 50th!

Come to think of it, I remember that Fran appeared on one of the video biographies of Lucy, and she DID point out how much of a Lucy fan she was. In fact, she mentioned that just watching Lucy on TV inspired her to become an actress herself.
Yea, I don't think that The Nanny was meant to be a 90's version of I Love Lucy; it was only supposed to be similar in the fact that it's comical and Fran's character was "silly" in her own way. Other than that, I think the show really had a style of its own.
SPLAIN 08-22-2003, 02:40 PM BUT, she did do some LUCY TAKES now and then, and had some similar traits and attitudes about meeting celebrities and the like.
DianeChambers87 08-22-2003, 03:00 PM I'm sorry but I have to agree with that. If you watch the Nanny Carefully (and I use to be the ultimate lucy fan I have 3 books all three dolls and like dozens of tapes plus I've seen every episode) The way fran reacts, the mouth gesture, the way she's always getting into trouble with max's plays, the way she keeps having accidents and screwing up famous actors that are working with Maxwell, and the thing that makes it seem the most like lucy and pay close attention to this: When Fran does something wrong and max begins to scold her or figures out what's going on they do the classic "Ricky and Lucy Dance" Where he starts walking and backing her into a corner and she starts to look away and give that look off to the side and he even shakes his finger like Ricky. The Quality between the shows, ofcourse, does not compare, but they are using "lucy and Ricky-like" qualities that up until then only Lucille Ball and Desi Arnez could pull off.
SPLAIN 08-22-2003, 03:02 PM I also remember the butler and that secretary having a Fred and Ethel type of relationship also, throwing zingers at each other all the time, right?

Yes, and on the last episode they ended up getting married and still continued to throw those zingers at each other! In my opinion, those two were the funniest and best part of the show.
