I take these things too personally.

MTM1Fan, VH1 is not marketing to our age group. (Of course, I'm making assumptions about your age that could be way off base!!) But as a middle-aged mother, I promise you, I am not in the target demographic and they don't care what I think. They are marketing to the 20somethings and the people you named are the ones they can relate to. Who needs VH1? I stick with TV Land!!! Lolac :wave:

Incidentally, MTM1 Fan, I had to laugh, reading your post. I like the same people you like, and always appreciate their being recognized for their talent and contribution, but DiCapprio, Spears, and Lopez "aren't important at all"? That part was a scream! And I don't mean that in a bad way.
Those three people you named generate hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue, provide and contribute to literally thousands of jobs through their hard work, talent, and endorsements, make charitable contributions that would break my bank account and all of my friends' combined, pay huge taxes, influence style and fashion... need I go on?
But seriously, I get your point. It just struck me funny; the "not important at all" part.

These are the people who recently named "Smells Like Teen Spirit" (or whatever it's called) the greatest song of the last 25 years or something like that, right?

Maybe the reason why I didn't consider those people important is because I have a different definition of an "icon", as most people do, I'm sure. To me, an icon is someone you can make a reference to, and everyone will know who you're talking about. You could dress up as them for Halloween, and everyone would recognize you. Having an enormous amount of talent doesn't hurt either. I'm sure the people I said weren't important at all have made a contribution in some way, but I just don't think that means they should be labeled an "icon". It probably was wrong of me to say that they weren't important at all. I apologize.

I guess I shouldn't have expected so much from VH1.

I guess I'm just one of those Hippie leftovers who believes we all deserve a chance to shine in our own way, unencumbered, and give to this world (in our short stay) whatever our contribution is, as long as we're not harming others.

I was really ticked off.. when they had Katharine Hepburn ( who won four Oscar awards) was standing at 84. Audrey Hepburn who was at 34 .. eminem in front of them?? Come on now, what is this world coming too.. sure Eminem can write, but really what on earth has he done that is so spectacular?. Blah. *Doesnt Get it* and Bob Hope was #127 and that man has done so much for the troops that, it just really ticked me off. GAHH (as Kate would say). So I agree! I didnt like the list at all. I am still in shock that they put Lucy @ #4. And she deserved it.

There was once a group of gentlemen who influenced this world in ways that are still being realized, and may never be fully comprehended.

They changed everything -- our attitudes, our fashions, our graphic designs, our hairstyles and more. They ushered in an era of revolution in the way we looked at ourselves, other generations and the world in general. They brought about this time during which *young* people decide what is "in" rather than middle-aged business executives -- something taken for granted today.

They said, "Why can't long-haired rockers sing slow ballads accompanied by cellos and violins?"

They said, "Why can't rock singers sing songs they wrote themselves?"

They said, "Why can't rock bands perform concerts outdoors in big sports stadiums?"

They said, "Why can't rock and roll movies be good?"

They said, "Why can't a 7-minute song top the charts and get regular radio airplay?"

And they did all of these things, most of them before anyone else did . . . in addition to virtually inventing the form of expression now known as the "music video!"

There has been a multitude of Guns'n'Roses fans, Nirvana fans, etc. who don't even realize that that favorite band of theirs would not have even existed had there not first been these other guys.

As a musical act, they once accomplished a feat so unbelievable, it has never come *close* to being duplicated, and most assuredly never will be done again -- placing nine (9) songs in the Top Ten singles chart at the same time!! Many of their musical creations are still used today -- decades later -- in TV shows, movies and TV commercials. They once sold more albums (CDs, if you will) in a single year than any other musical act did that year. Incidentally, this occurred 25 years AFTER they had broken up, and 15 years AFTER one of their key members had died!!

If you don't know who I'm talking about, they were called "The Beatles" , and astoundingly, this phenomenal collection of icons just beat Jerry Seinfeld by a hair on this VH1 list, and even placed *lower* on the list than the likes of Tom Cruise, Superman, the cast of "Friends" and . . . VH1's choice for the #1 Pop Culture Icon, Oprah Winfrey! (?????????)

Then again, what more can you expect from a TV channel that still insists people walked around in the 1970s saying "groovy"?

I know this is the DVDS board, but It's so nice to see someone recognize pure excellence when it's there; and it was there with The Beatles. I happen to think they got even better after they broke up. Their influence has been felt in every type of music since. We even saw their influence in episode #113, "The Readcoats Are Coming."

Thanks for your reply, and support. You know -- several years ago, it was brought to my attention that author Stephen King had publicly stated that the Beatles were "overrated."

And, all I could think of was . . . how Stephen King must be the kind of guy who might sit in his dentist's waiting room one morning listening to something goofy like Tony Bennet singing "Michelle" on one of those funny radio stations only dentists/doctors seem to know how to find. Afterwards, he might really get into a rock song on his car radio, admiring the skillful work of a favorite guitarist, who had taught himself to play as a kid by copying the riffs from "I Feel Fine", "Day Tripper" & "Birthday" . . . on his way to the the local shopping mall, where he'll hear a muzak version of "Yesterday." Later at home, Mr. King might flip on the TV and enjoy a couple of music videos -- what the Beatles used to call "promotional films" when they were making them back in the 1960s. Then, he'll turn on a cable channel and enjoy a rerun of a comedy show the theme song of which just happens to be "With A Little Help From My Friends." During the show, someone will try to sell him a new kind of TV, using the song "Getting Better", someone else will try to sell him sneakers, using the song "Revolution" and someone else will advertise something else, using the song "Come Together."

And sadly, at the end of the day, Mr. King will *still* not have gotten the message.
