View Full Version : Has Anyone Ever Collected Laserdiscs?
Jenya 07-21-2003, 06:07 PM Hey Everybody:
Has anyone ever got into these big record-size DVDs? They almost had every move in widescreen (unlike VHS), and they also had a lot of extra material on them too. I have a few laserdiscs with supplimentary material and commentaries that are not even on the DVDs. Does anyone have a favorite movie or a box set collection? Mine is The Art Of Tom & Jerry. Some of these cartoons are not on any other video format!

I remember wanting a laserdisc player when I was a kid, but they were pretty expensive. The discs themselves were pretty spendy, too. Plus, you had to worry about flipping the disc over in the middle of the movie in most cases, and eventual laser rot for earlier discs from the early '80s.
In retrospect, I'm glad I waited for DVD. It's a superior format in every way, but hang on to those laserdiscs, Jenya. Some of them are worth a lot of money these days.
Jenya 07-22-2003, 10:58 AM Hello Aka:
I hear that the box sets are worth a lot of money. I wonder how much my special edition Star Wars Trilogy is worth? I do like DVD better for picture quality, and I don't like to flip Laserdiscs over all the time either. My only pet peeve with DVD is if there is any kind of scratch on it, it won't play. If laserdisc has a scratch on it, the player will just skip over it (most of the time). I don't think i'm going to sell any of my laserdiscs. especially if they have special features on them. Like I mentioned, on some DVD's, they never included any special features, even though my laserdisc does have them.

Jenya,
Good points! But I'm very anal when it comes to the care of my records, CDs, and DVDs, so I've never really experienced a problem when it comes to scratches on my DVDs.
As for as your question about the SE Star Wars trilogy, the box set is worth a pretty penny. A lot of people use them as the source for bootleg Star Wars trilogy DVDs. The THX laserdisc box set from 1995 (non special edition) is worth a lot more, though, and the discs from even before then, I believe, are worth even more. Check Ebay for examples.
Peace,

webuster 07-23-2003, 03:09 PM Are lazerdiscs still in print- and do they still make lazerdiscs of new films. I heard that round the mid 80's they stopped- I would think that the star wars trilogy box set would fetch alot of money now- cos not as many ppl would have been focusing on buying lazerdiscs - and if the set is 1995- everyone would be in the hype of VHS- so there may not be many owners of the lazerdisc- apart from major star wars fans. Where can you buy lazerdisc players- online on ebay a few ppl are selling Shock Treatment lazerdiscs- and since it isn't out on dvd (yet- I will someday get the film on dvd- one way or another) I've been interested in buying a player. Do they still make players- if they don't then it'll probably cost alot- like an antique- just like Beta and that other thing.
What does lazer rot look like? The was another thing out called a video disc- seems better, should prevent the 'rot'- in video disc you put the box and everything into the player, the player took the disc out for you, played the film, put the disc back in.
Remember when VHS came out and they charged everyone like $100 for any crappy film- films which they give out for free in magazines now- everyone who bought a film on VHS at that price must really be kickin themselves. DVD was probably the same- my cousin had a player b4 there was much hype about it.

Hello Webuster:
I don't think there is any new movies are on Laserdisc, but I still do see old ones (older movies that were never opened and sold) here in Montreal still for sale! And they are not very expensive either. I don't think you can buy brand new players anymore either. But some electronics dealers often say that Laserdiscs sound a lot better than DVDs. These are the kind of people that would play one movie on DVD, and another one on Laserdisc at the same time. They will try to make a point which one looks and sounds better, and they also try to make it look like everyone else in the world has bad hearing and eyesight!
In anycase you can buy some used laserdisc players real cheap, and like AKA mentioned, you can find some old laserdiscs movies on ebay for a real bargain.;)
Thanks for the ebay tip, AKA!:)
Bye!
From Jenya:)
webuster 07-25-2003, 01:58 PM Thanks Jenya- I might just keep an eye out for a lazerdisc playey to buy now if I'm shopping. Some people go to extreme lengths to prove points like dvd is worse/better than lazerdisc- just cos technologies changing.
Krista2882 07-29-2003, 09:28 AM I've had a laserdisc player my whole life. lol!
My Dad has had one forever, and most of our movies are on laserdisc. Right now, our DVD player is a combination player- it plays both DVD's and laserdiscs. I didn't even realize until a few weeks ago that they aren't printing new movies on laserdisc anynmore.
But yeah- we have a HUGE collection of laserdiscs- both movies and music videos. I think they're great except for the ones that were made during a certain amount of time in the early 80's by a certain company- they have what they call "laser rot". They weren't really made correctly, and they started to disintegrate, kind of. a couple of our movies have that. Like "The King And I". Me and my mom watched it on laserdisc a year ago, and some parts of it you can barely hear becase it's all staticy. and the picture is all weird too. but only a couple of them are like that. I think that happened in the early 80's- it was the way they made them or something...
But anyway, I love laserdiscs! We just watched the first Terminator movie on laserdisc last week. Oh, and my Dad has some special edition of the Star Wars trilogy on laser disc too....
ok I'll stop rambling now... :D

what's cool is that the laserdisc/DVD player that we have now automatically switches sides.
and yes. you mentioned laser rot too..

oh jeez- me too. I'm so anal about my CD's and Dvd's. (not the laserdiscs because those are my Dad's. but if they were mine, I would be anal about them too. hehe). You should see my CD's they don't have a scratch on them. then you look at the bottom of my brother's CD's and they look like they've been dragged across the pavement. lol!

We bought a double disc laserdisc player. It can play two of them, and switch sides too. It was extremely expensive though. Almost $5000 CDN:eek:
