View Full Version : We Need To Remember Something Here....
pilotguy 07-17-2003, 05:26 AM Some of us are treating the news of NICK moving "Wings" to 2 AM in the fall with an "Aw, so what? I can still tape it and watch it later" attitude.
That's fine, but please keep in mind that this scheduling is NOT going to keep "Wings" in the public eye and mainstream social culture...and THAT'S the REALLY bad part about this whole thing!
Again, some may say, "So what?", but consider this...
Do you think that a major home video company (Paramount, Columbia House, etc.) is going to release a DVD set or series for a show that's shown at 2 AM?
Do you think that a publishing company is going to publish a reference book on a show that's shown at 2 AM?
Do you think that anyone is going to produce any type of reunion or retrospective special for a show that's shown at 2 AM?
Do you think that a show that's shown at 2 AM is going to help any of the "Wings" cast members get new acting roles?
THESE are some of the reasons why NICK banishing "WINGS" to 2 AM is such a bad situation!
pilotguy 07-17-2003, 06:54 AM As an addition to my previous message, instead of just moaning about this ridiculous move, or complaining to NICK (we all know how effective THAT is), I think our next step should be to seriously look into the possibility of "Wings" being shown on other stations besides NICK....either another national cable station like Superstation WTBS or our local affiliates.
It's more than likely that if local affiliates can show "Wings", then it would be shown in an early evening slot (somewhere between 6 and 8 PM), or in an EARLY "late night" slot (somewhere between 11 PM and 1 AM)....ANY of those times would be better than the graveyard slot that NICK will be throwing the show into!
We had better start this search now, because once NICK schedules a show at 2 AM, the NEXT move is usually to the "trash bin"! (Think "COACH"!)
DianeChambers87 07-17-2003, 10:29 AM Try the superstation, WGN use to show it before it came to nick at nite
phoebe7165 07-17-2003, 01:35 PM Pilotguy makes a good point. I didn't think of it that way. I don't know why TBS never picked up Wings. I thought they did all shows. We should all bug TBS. I mean come on, Ted Turner can get the rights to anything!! Wings doesn't especially have to be shown late at night like 11pm. Roseanne is shown here at 3pm on TBS. What gets me though, is that N@N and TVLand televise a show for a while, then take it off, and I go on that show's message board and I see nothing but 'Please bring back the show!' Now if the show was taken off for low ratings, then how come there's a slew of fans complaining? I don't mean just a few, the majority of the board is just that.:thumbsdow   :ducky:

Yeah, that stinks what they did to "Coach," I actually like that show and would much rather watch it than "Roseanne" four times a night (which is shown on like two other stations already, as is "Full House" and of course "The Cosby Show"). I agree, the last show they moved to a really late slot not long after it had just started with the network was "Coach, " and I even think that was on longer in the 11 slot before getting demoded than "Wings" was, so who knows how much longer it will be before they get rid of it. (Of course I'm crossing my fingers, hoping that they don't!) I just don't understand why they think viewers (who they supposedly "appreciate") want to see shows that are already on other stations, and that aren't nearly as good as "Wings." I mean I think it's great that they labeled it a "Modern TV Classic" and started showing it on their network, but I think another network would give it much better treatment.
Adamantium 07-17-2003, 08:54 PM It's sad. I used to think of a show coming to Nick at Nite, being the best thing. Like N@N was the best channel for a sitcom. And now, we're all trying to get Wings to move to another channel. I just wish more people liked and watched "Wings." If I knew how to get a book published and wasn't so freakin' lazy, I'd write a "Wings Companion" or something.
Freakzilla 07-18-2003, 01:38 AM This is really bad. It's sucks how N@N keeps pushing good shows like Family Ties, Coach, and Wings into later time-slots while Cosby and the new shows get the good slots. Unlike all these shows, I couldn't care less if Roseanne or Full House failed on N@N. I'd actually love it if Full House failed miserably on N@N. Then maybe they'd try Wings in an earlier slot.
Another channel we should try to get to air Wings is TNN/Spike TV. Wings is a show about brothers, so it might fit there. Plus, it's owned by Viacom, so buying the rights wouldn't be an issue. TNN in the past has shown lots of shows that came right from N@N. There are better channels, but this would be the easiest move.

Pilotguy, I couldn't agree more!! I wasn't a regualr viewer of Nick at Nite. One night I happened to be channel surfing and I caught an add for the marathon week of Wings episodes and I was thrilled!! I hadn't seen Wings in years and years and it is one of my top 5 shows of all time. I know the show ran on USA network but most of the time it was on in the morning and I just didn't really see it that often. So when it (first) started airing on Nick in the evenings it was perfect. The first night of the marathon I must have sat and watched the first 6 episodes non-stop!
But Pilotguy is absolutely right. I had hoped if Wings had gotten some real exposure, with a good time spot it might have sparked a new fan base and a new appreciation of the show which would have opened up the doors to a real possibility of DVDs, as well as acutal TV acting opportunities for the likes of Crystal Bernard. It still frustrates me a lot that the only work it appears she can get is a guest shot on a show like "According to Jim". She's just too talented, especially with comedy-sitcom work, to not get a chance. But a move like this by Nick at Nite makes anything like this happening extremely remote.

I don't know how they choose what shows wind up on DVD, but I do know that Sports Night is on DVD and that show had only about 45 episodes and isn't in syndication (although I think Comedy Central still shows it from time to time). Also, I haven't heard of any plans for Seinfeld being released and that's been one of the #1 shows of the past decade. Maybe, we'll be lucky and Wings may come out soon.

Seinfeld is set to come out, I just don't know when.
It seems like "Wings" is on either early in the morning (USA) or late at night (N@N). So it can only really get a cult following. Wings will always be a show that only the die-hard fans (Us) will watch. And that's sad, because it really is a great show deserving all the good things that will (or should) come it's way.
This is also typical. I'm a huge TV fan. When I'm not watching it, I'm typing about it on these message boards. So I've seen a lot of shows. I watch alot of older shows(via TV,DVD,VHS), I'm a fan of sitcoms from the 1950's and 60's. As well as the 70's, 80's and 90's. And it never fails. All of the shows I see as great well-written sitcoms always get dumped around. "Wings" is a great show. But not enough TV viewers believe that. So they just turn the channel, and we the fans don't get to watch a great show, because the network only appreciates the people who don't watch the shows.
I think it's very possible for "Wings" to come to DVD. I mean, "Mad About You" came. I didn't realize that show was even popular enough to come.

I know that oh so well. There are sooo many good shows thart had been cancelled only because the networks pay attention to the people who don't watch the shows. It seems that in the past 8 years or so, the only TV shows I watch, only last 1, 2, 3, or 4 seasons. They are wonderfully written, interesting, funny TV shows, and they all have a HUGE cult following, but the networks don't even consider, "oh, there are a ton of die-hard fans out there for this show that would like to see it continue.. we'll renew this one.." They just say, oh, more people are watching 'Friends' than are watchinb this show.. this one's gotta go." rrrr!
I know that wasn't the case with Wings when it was in it's first run, because back then, the networks weren't so trigger-happy with their shows, so we got 8 great years out of Wings, but now is when they're giving it the crappy treatment by saying ratings were low at 11 PM, so they moved it to 1 AM, and now in the fall to 2 AM?! They never even gave it a chance at the 11 PM timeslot! it was there for like, 2 weeks and then if people WERE starting to watch it, then, "hello, where'd it go?!" I only knew that it was moved to 1 AM because of you guys. the TV Guide still had it listed at 11 PM for about a month, and so did the TV Guide channel for a couple weeks! It sucks that N@N won't even give it a chance. if they left it at an earlier time, and kept it there for a little while, then I'm sure it'll get a new fan-base.
