Last week, the news was that it would be this week, whether charges would be laid or not, and I haven't heard anything.

To me, the issue was whether it was rape. It's not like Kobe is the first ever athlete to be accused of rape, and these allegations are usually proven false.

I just caught Kobe Bryant's press conference with his wife by his side. As for the sexual assault charges, time will tell on that one.
Even if he is cleared, I doubt his reputation can survive his admission of adultery.
The news reported he was taking over Michael Jordon's role in the way of the million dollar endorsement deals.
I suspect that he'll lose those deals soon.
His wife looked so sad. They just had a baby. File this under, 'What the hell was he thinking?!'

Kobe Bryant Charged With Sexual Assault
EAGLE, Colo. (July 18) - Kobe Bryant was charged Friday with sexually assaulting a 19-year-old woman in a case bound to tarnish the career of one of the NBA's brightest young superstars.

Bryant denied the charge, fighting back tears at a news conference in Los Angeles and saying he was guilty only of adultery.

''I didn't force her to do anything against her will. I'm innocent,'' he said, sitting next to his wife, Vanessa. ''I sit here in front of you guys furious at myself, disgusted at myself for making a mistake of adultery.''

The 24-year-old Los Angeles Lakers' guard faces probation to life in prison if convicted of the single felony count, Eagle County District Attorney Mark Hurlbert said.

Hurlbert said Bryant forced the victim into ''submission'' through physical force but refused to disclose other details.

The woman worked the front desk at the exclusive spa where Bryant was staying while in the state for knee surgery. Hurlbert said she would not be made available for comment.

Bryant, free on $25,000 bail, must return to court in Eagle on Aug. 6 for a hearing.

Bryant's attorney, Pamela Mackey, said he will plead innocent.

Speaking at Bryant's news conference at the Lakers' arena, Mackey said the defense will be that the sexual encounter was ''between two consenting adults.''

Bryant needed several seconds to compose himself before speaking, and his voice quivered once he started. His wife, who had their first child in January, held his right hand.

''I love my wife with all my heart. She's my backbone,'' he said, turning to her.

Earlier, Vanessa Bryant released a statement, saying she stood by her husband. ''He is not a criminal,'' she said.

The case has riveted the sports world for nearly two weeks because it involves one of the NBA's most magnetic stars. Bryant has also used his clean image to land lucrative endorsement contracts.

Just last month, he signed a multimillion-dollar sneaker deal with Nike to go with contracts he already had with Sprite, McDonald's and Spalding.

The case also raises questions about Bryant's summer plans and whether he will be able to play with the U.S. Olympic qualifying team, which begins practice Aug. 10 in New York.

The Lakers start practice in October for the 2003-04 season.

''Naturally, we're disappointed with today's announcement,'' Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak said. ''While there are many questions concerning this issue, we will wait for time and the judicial process to answer them.''

NBA commissioner David Stern said the league would have no comment until the case is settled.

Hurlbert, who took office in December, said he consulted prosecutors around the state and pored over physical evidence and testimony before making his decision.

''This did not come easily,'' he said.

Bryant is accused of assaulting the woman June 30 at the gated Lodge & Spa at Cordillera in nearby Edwards. Bryant, who was having surgery in Vail, arrived at the lodge that day.

Eagle County sheriff's deputies took Bryant to Valley View Hospital in Glenwood Springs for tests early July 2, later letting him leave in a taxi with his bodyguards.

The woman also underwent tests, and Hurlbert has said he needed information from the state crime lab before making his decision.

Bryant surrendered to authorities July 4 and was released an hour later after posting bond.

The arrest was announced July 6, prompting a firestorm of media attention on this small mountain town 100 miles west of Denver.

Reporters have swamped the cul-de-sac where the woman lives with her parents, but she has said nothing publicly. Her family has consulted an attorney, who referred all questions to the prosecutor.

The woman is well-known in Eagle as a former high school cheerleader and talented musician who auditioned for ''American Idol'' last year.

The news stunned basketball fans: Bryant, a five-time All-Star who has already won three titles with the Lakers, is by most accounts a quiet man who prefers dinner with a few friends to joining teammates for a night on the town.

''Oh, no,'' said Patricia Brewer, who heard the news at LA's Staples Center, where her daughter was to play in a basketball game later in the day. ''I love him so much and I'll still keep an open mind and hope that this is all a mistake.

''But you know, if it's true, then he's just another man masquerading as a family man, fooling us all, and that just makes your heart sink.''

Legal experts said the case could come down to witnesses.

''When you start with both people saying there was sex an enormous amount of the evidence doesn't matter anymore,'' said Larry Pozner, former president of National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. ''Did anyone hear anything unusual. Was her clothing torn? Was he bruised, was she bruised? These become critical.''

Loyola University law school professor Laurie Levenson said if the case goes to trial, a jury might feel a personal connection to Bryant, just as they did in the O.J. Simpson murder trial.

''As a celebrity he comes in with a super presumption of innocence,'' she said. ''Any defendant whom the public knows by his first name, their reaction is, 'No, not Kobe.' You will come in with jurors thinking, 'We don't want him to have done it.'''

Sports marketing experts said the case will be a permanent blow to Bryant's image and could cost him millions in lost endorsements.

''The image was of a perfect role model, a superstar athlete who didn't have a parking ticket, the all-American boy and now, well, that image is tarnished,'' said Bob Williams, chief executive of Burns Sports & Celebrities Inc. in Evanston, Ill.

''As of today and until the trial, his image is going to take a beating.''

Last fall, Williams' firm commissioned a poll that listed Bryant as the third-best product endorser in sports, behind Tiger Woods and Michael Jordan.

Bryant entered the NBA in 1996 at age 18, straight out of high school. He has drawn comparisons to the league's greatest players and helped Los Angeles win titles from 2000-02.

Along with his determination, Bryant has also shown class, something many fans feel are missing from other NBA stars. He wept when the Lakers were eliminated from the playoffs by San Antonio in May, and he wore his hospital ID bracelet in a game the day after his daughter was born.

He married Vanessa Laine in April 2001. The two met on the set of a music video where Laine was working, and got engaged while she was still in high school. Vanessa gave birth to their first child, Natalia Diamante Bryant, in January.

We don't know the guilt or innocense about the, let's face it, rape charge. It's not his fault if he is being falsely accused. That would be all her fault. EAGLE, Colo. (AP) -- The sexual assault charge brought against Kobe Bryant and his admission that he "made the mistake of adultery" threaten to spoil his reputation as one of the NBA's classiest role models and cast a cloud over the Los Angeles Lakers.

Bryant appeared at a Los Angeles news conference holding hands with wife Vanessa on Friday and said he was innocent of the criminal charge and insisted the act was consensual.

"I sit here in front of you guys, furious at myself, disgusted at myself for making the mistake of adultery," he said.

Bryant, 24, was charged Friday with a single count of felony sexual assault against a 19-year-old woman at an exclusive spa where he was staying when he came to Colorado for knee surgery. If convicted, he faces four years to life in prison or 20 years to life on probation, and a fine of up to $750,000.

Eagle County District Attorney Mark Hurlbert filed the charge after spending two weeks reviewing evidence and consulting with other prosecutors, and said he "can prove this case beyond a reasonable doubt."

"Given the seriousness of the crime, and given the type of crime, it's something the prosecutor does not get into lightly," Hurlbert said Saturday on NBC's "Weekend Today" show.

"It certainly is a possibility that he could go to prison on this," Hurlbert told ESPN, also in a Saturday morning interview. He said there had been no talk of a plea bargain, and he didn't know if the victim had been offered a settlement of a potential lawsuit.

Bryant's lawyer, Pamela Mackey, said he will plead innocent.

Even if he is ultimately cleared, the criminal charge and admission of infidelity will almost certainly change the public perception of Bryant.

His squeaky-clean image made him one of the NBA's most recognizable and marketable stars. He recently signed a multimillion-dollar deal with Nike and has endorsement deals with Sprite, McDonald's and Spalding.

A poll last fall by Burns Sports & Celebrities Inc. rated him the third-best product endorser in sports, behind Tiger Woods and Michael Jordan.

Bryant could lose millions of dollars in endorsements.

Bryant's team could feel the sting as well.

The Lakers became the favorites to win the NBA championship next season after signing point guard Gary Payton and power forward Karl Malone.

Malone said he doesn't expect Bryant's troubles to be a distraction. But the case is bound to take an emotional toll on Bryant, and a conviction would mean the Lakers would lose one of the league's best players in the prime of his career.

"Naturally, we're disappointed with today's announcement," Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak said. "While there are many questions concerning this issue, we will wait for time and the judicial process to answer them."

Bryant said Friday he was thinking more of his family than his career.

"I have a lot at stake, and it has nothing to do with the game of basketball and it has nothing to do with endorsements," said Bryant, who fought back tears several times during the news conference.

"It has to do with my family and being falsely accused. And, I'm innocent. We're going to fight this all the way to the end."

Mackey criticized the decision to file charges, saying the evidence wasn't strong enough to prove the allegations beyond reasonable doubt.

"The evidence in this case falls far, far short of that standing. The accusations in this case cannot be proven because they are false," she said.

Legal experts said that prosecutors have a tough task because the case appears to hinge mainly on Bryant's word against that of the alleged victim.

"He said, she said" cases can be the toughest for prosecutors, said Steve Cron, a longtime sports criminal defense attorney in Los Angeles.

"How do they prove it's not consensual? It's hard to prove (with) two adults in a room having sex that the sex was not consensual.

"Do you have witnesses or physical evidence? Was she bruised, scratched, injured in some fashion?"

The alleged assault occurred June 30 at the gated Lodge & Spa at Cordillera in nearby Edwards, where the woman worked at the front desk.

Bryant returned to California after undergoing unspecified medical tests in Colorado on July 2 at the request of investigators. He returned to Eagle on July 4, surrendered to authorities and was released an hour later after posting $25,000 bond.

Bryant is scheduled to return to Eagle for a hearing on Aug. 6.

Bryant tearfully addressed his wife at the news conference.

"You're a blessing, you're a piece of my heart, the air I breathe, and you're the strongest person I know and I'm so sorry for having to put you through this, putting my family through this," Bryant said, pausing several times as he spoke.

Vanessa Bryant, who gave birth to the couple's first child in January, did not speak at the news conference. In a statement released earlier, she said her husband was not a criminal.

"He is a loving and kind husband and father," she said. "I believe in his innocence. Because I know him to be innocent, I will stand by him and we will face this together."

Some fans weren't convinced.

Patricia Brewer, who was at the Staples Center for her daughter's basketball game, was shocked at the news.

"I love him so much and I'll still keep an open mind and hope that this is all a mistake," Brewer said. "But you know, if it's true, then he's just another man masquerading as a family man, fooling us all, and that just makes your heart sink."

Advertisers worry: Who's next?

Case against popular NBA star Kobe Bryant could chill other athlete endorsement deals.

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - Superstar athletes had better watch out. Kobe Bryant's legal problems may end up hurting their endorsement paychecks, as well as his own.

Experts in sports marketing say the sexual assault charge against Bryant late last week is making advertisers nervous about signing big contracts with other athletes, even those who thus far have stellar reputations.

Bryant, the star guard for the L.A. Lakers basketball team, has been one of the leading pitchmen in sports, with deals with McDonald's (MCD: Research, Estimates), Coca-Cola (KO: Research, Estimates) brand Sprite and Nike (NKE: Research, Estimates).

Those companies have issued cautious statements, neither endorsing Bryant's claims of innocence nor distancing themselves from the 24-year-old who was one of the first player to jump straight from high school to NBA stardom.

But whatever happens to the contractual relationship between Bryant and his sponsors, the arrest of a star athlete who once had a rock-solid reputation could have a chilling effect on other big-dollar sponsorship deals, even with athletes whose public appeal remains intact.

"I think right now, the watch word is hesitation," said Bob Williams, president of Burns Sports & Celebrities, which arranges celebrity endorsement deals. "This is an eye opener, making many advertisers step back and say, 'If it can happen to Kobe Bryant, it can happen to anyone.'"

Kobe among leading endorsers
Bryant's recently signed Nike deal is worth a reported $40 million over 5 years, while his other deals are believed to be worth about another $12 million a year.

Tiger Woods earns the most from endorsements, according to Forbes magazine, which reported he earned $70 million last year from sponsors and appearance fees.

The NBA's No. 1 draft pick LeBron James signed a $90 million, seven-year deal with Nike before graduating from high school. The recently retired Michael Jordan received more than $30 million in endorsement and appearance money last year, according to Forbes, but that income is declining.

Those athletes and other endorsement All Stars -- like Tour de France defending champion Lance Armstrong, with a reported $16.5 million in endorsements, Yankees star Derek Jeter and Chinese NBA star Yao Ming -- all have flawless public images at this point, as did Bryant before he was charged last week.

While athletes getting in trouble with the law is not new, Bryant's case has caught the attention of Madison Avenue in a way most others have not.

"The athletes who ended up on police blotters were generally the mid-level to lower level athletes who did not affect advertisers," said Williams.

Williams said that makers of athletic shoes will continue to use sport stars, perhaps even those that run afoul of the law. These marketers believe they need athletes to sell their products, and a start with some legal problems, like Philadelphia 76ers star Allen Iverson, can give the advertisers an edge when it comes to reaching their audience.

But most makers of mass-market consumer products will stay away from any potential endorser who has even a whiff of legal problems, he said.

Successful defense could still hurt deals
Bryant, who has a wife and a six-month old daughter, admitted to a sexual encounter with his 19-year old accuser but claimed it was consensual.

That may not be enough to save his endorsement career, even if he wins in court, said Henry Schafer, executive vice president of Marketing Evaluations Inc., a firm that charts the appeal of public figures with its "Q-Ratings."

Schafer pointed to former NBA star Magic Johnson, whose endorsements disappeared after Johnson said in 1991 that he had contracted the AIDS-causing HIV virus after having an affair. Johnson, once one of the top pitchmen in sports, finally signed a deal with Lincoln Mercury last week for an undisclosed sum -- his first major endorsement deal since disclosing he was HIV positive.

Schafer said even though Johnson's public image had been repaired for some time, advertisers had been reluctant to be the first one to sign him.

There are exceptions. Former Chicago Bull Jordan has thus far weathered an admission of an affair.

Bryant's defense, if successful in winning acquittal, probably won't trigger the end of his endorsements under any morals clauses written into the deals, said Marc Ganis, a sports marketing expert.

"The morals clause has been relatively weak – if you're convicted of a felony, the contract can be void, but that's about it," said Ganis. "I don't know if this case will cause a backlash against other athletes, but it'll give some teeth to sponsors for negotiation of morals clauses in the future."

He said until now the athlete endorser has been in a strong enough bargaining position to keep the clauses relatively weak.

"Convicted of a felony is not a high enough standard," said Ganis. "They (advertisers) are buying reputation. If the reputation gets sullied, they're not getting what they paid for."

Accuser Hospitalized Last Winter in Mental Health Case

Authorities: She Was a 'Danger to Herself'

EAGLE, Colo. (July 24) -- Scrutiny of Kobe Bryant's accuser intensified Thursday as authorities said she had been hospitalized as a "danger to herself'' four months before the alleged sexual assault.

University of Northern Colorado police chief Terry Urista said campus police received a call about 9PM MT on Feb. 25 regarding a woman in a dormitory room.

"An officer determined she was a danger to herself,'' he said. "It's classified as a mental health issue.''

The woman was transported by ambulance to North Colorado Medical Center of Greeley, Urista said. He refused to say whether it was a suicide attempt.

Lindsey McKinney, who lived with the woman this spring before the two had a falling out, said her friend tried to kill herself at school this winter and again in May in Eagle. She said the woman tried to overdose on sleeping pills.

Prosecutors and an attorney for Bryant's 19-year-old accuser have declined to discuss details of the case or the background of the woman. Records relating to the case were sealed.

Robert Pugsley, a criminal law professor at Southwestern University in Los Angeles, said if the two incidents turn out to be suicide attempts it could weaken the prosecution's case.

"The more these indications of instability emerge, the more difficult it might prove for the prosecutor to persuade the jury beyond a reasonable doubt that this young woman did not misinterpret the event,'' he said.

Another legal expert said the suicide attempt claims may never be heard at trial.

Christopher Mueller, a law professor at the University of Colorado in Boulder, said judges can exclude evidence that exposes a witness to undue embarrassment if it isn't essential to the charges.

Mueller also said the defense will think "long and hard'' about whether to label Bryant's accuser unstable and suicidal. "To attack a person who comes into a court as a victim is always a tricky thing,'' he said.

Bryant was charged with felony sexual assault after his accuser told authorities he attacked her at an Edwards resort June 30. Bryant said the sex was consensual.

Meanwhile, Eagle County Judge Fred Gannett issued an order limiting public comment about the case by attorneys, authorities and others involved in the case, including Bryant and any witnesses.

Citing concern about pretrial news coverage, the judge said it was his duty to try to guarantee a fair trial.

"Where the case is a notorious one, that burden on the court is heavy,'' Gannett wrote.

Before the judge's ruling, Eagle County Sheriff Joe Hoy dismissed speculation by at least one of the woman's friends that she is having second thoughts about going forward with the case.

"As far as I've heard, that is just plain rumor,'' Hoy said. "That is just off-board.''

Prosecutors met with the woman at length at her lawyer's office this week and interviewed other young women at the district attorney's office in Eagle. Friends say the woman is strong enough to withstand the media attention.

Krista Flannigan, a spokeswoman for District Attorney Mark Hurlbert, said the final decision about pursuing the case rests with prosecutors, who represent the public and not just the victim.

"It's not her complaint against him. It's the people of Colorado against him,'' she said.

Prosecutors have sometimes decided to continue cases, including sexual assault and domestic violence ones, without the cooperation of victims, she said.

Hoy, who was accused by defense attorneys of rushing the case against Hurlbert's wishes, also said it was up to the prosecutor whether to go to trial.

"It wouldn't be her choice,'' Hoy said.

The woman's name has been on the radio in at least 60 cities and posted on various Internet sites, complete with address, phone number and, in several cases, photographs of the wrong women.

Media focus on her is angering some who say the spotlight is making her a victim all over again. The release of her name is an invasion of her privacy, said Flannigan, who is also a victim advocate with experience in several high-profile cases.

"All assault victims' names are supposed to be protected,'' she said. "It's a safety and security issue, especially with higher profile cases. Once they are exposed, they really feel it's another violation. The victim is revictimized.''

"Things became so bad between Kobe and his parents that they stopped speaking, but he went right ahead with the wedding and they got hitched in April 2001," said the close source.

Unfortunately, marriage didn't stop the criticism. Some of those closest to 24-year-old Kobe repeatedly charged his wife was a self-centered gold digger.

"Kobe's teammates on the Lakers want nothing to do with Vanessa because they feel she's just after his dough," said the close source.

As Kobe started paying more attention to the venom being spewed, he began becoming more distant, claims the close source.

"Things have been very cold between Kobe and Vanessa -- and his friends aren't shocked that he sought comfort with another woman. His marriage has been going bad for months. They are shocked, of course, that a woman is alleging that Kobe raped her. That they find hard to believe."

Lately the couple had been "arguing frequently," said the family friend.

As a kid, not only did we love sports, but game shows.

To Tell The Truth was one of the favorites -- three people would stand up and state the same name. The show came to mind Friday as a tearful Kobe Bryant explained he had committed adultery with a 19-year-old woman in Edwards, Colo., two weeks ago, but did not commit felony sexual assault on her, as was the charge by the district attorney of Eagle County.

"Hello, my name is Kobe Bryant."

"Hello, my name is Kobe Bryant."

"Hello, my name is Kobe Bryant."

"I am innocent."

Let's skip the dialogue.

Will the real Kobe Bryant please stand up?

You see, we don't know the real Kobe Bryant. Sure, we know this astonishingly talented basketball player with three NBA titles in his pocket with the Lakers. He bears the mannerisms, size, talent and even the voice timbre of Michael Jordan, reminding us that nobody is irreplaceable.

And just like Jordan, however different the course of action may be, there is trouble off the court. We wouldn't have thought that with Bryant. His refreshing personality, stunning maturity coming out of high school into the NBA, and his ability to deal with all the attention made us realize early on he is special.

Bryant was the proverbial "Golden Child." Bright, open, accommodating, if obviously quite full of himself. But for all the respect he required for privacy, and dancing to the rhythm of his own beat while staying away from his teammates, some issues bubbled just below the surface.

Oh, we knew all about the ego problems with Shaquille O'Neal. They both wanted ownership of the team, as it were, to be the leader.

But when Bryant became involved with a high school girl named Vanessa in Orange County three years ago, then engaged and ultimately married, his parents were livid. Former NBA player Jelly Bean Joe Bryant and his wife became estranged from their prodigal son once he married her two years ago. It all bubbled to the surface when the Lakers went to his hometown of Philadelphia to play the 76ers in the 2001 Finals, and then came the 2002 NBA All-Star Game in Philly.

He was booed repeatedly. He was upset about it. His parents weren't really there to back him up and few friends were around. The rumblings began that the easy-smiling innocent was anything but a naïve super-talent trying to find his way.

In January, he and Vanessa had a baby girl, someone Bryant often deferred to as so precious he even wore her hospital bracelet so he could feel closer to her.

But as he sat in the press conference begging forgiveness Friday, it was hard to swallow as Vanessa pawed at his hand, lovingly looking into his eyes, as he said:

"You're a blessing, you're a piece of my heart, the air I breathe, and you're the strongest person I know and I'm so sorry for having to put you through this, putting my family through this."

Really? If all of that is true, why the adulterous act? Was it just another performance? Most believe he should have stated his case sooner. It might have been more palatable had he not waited for the charge. It required nearly two weeks before the DA was convinced that Bryant had lured the Northern Colorado University sophomore, working as a desk clerk at the posh resort, up to his room, and forced her to have sex.

The only two people who really know are Bryant and the young woman. Certainly it is plausible that she and her friends decided this was the route to take after she grudgingly had sex with him. But why? Money? It wouldn't be the first time, but her history as a high school cheerleader and student don't add up to this. She wouldn't put herself through this scrutiny just for the money.

Still the crux of the matter is we don't know. Bryant and the woman are the only people who really know.

What is even more disturbing was Bryant's first account of the situation came July 12 to Los Angeles Times columnist Bill Plaschke. In a brief interview, Bryant said:

"When everything comes clean, it will all be fine, you'll see. But you guys know me, I shouldn't have to say anything. You know I would never do something like that. Man, there's a lot of crazy stories out there."

The thing is, everything is not fine, and we don't know him. We don't really know any of these professional athletes except for our gut feelings. We hang out in the locker rooms, have long conversations, every once in a while have a lunch or dinner with them.

But what do we really know?

We know that Bryant is one of the most gifted basketball players of our time.

We know that he has received just about everything he has ever wanted in his life, including sex with that 19-year-old woman in the Colorado resort June 30.

What we don't know is if it was felony sexual assault.

Will the real Kobe Bryant please stand up?

I think he slept with her, but didn't rape her and she just wants money.

About all of this controversy, I think Kobe was thinking with the wrong head.

I have no idea what to believe but I heard today on the news that Eagle County police that are investigating the Kobe Bryant case had lawsuits brough against them saying they target minorities, and that 98% of the people pulled over are black or hispanic, the other "hippie types", and there's only a 1% black population there.
There is also a report that the girl went to a party and some of her friends said she started bragging about the whole thing.

Bryant's attorneys had argued against allowing cameras during the hearing scheduled Wednesday, saying they could jeopardize Bryant's right to a fair trial.

Eagle County Judge Frederick Gannett ruled that was unlikely.

"Defendant's objections are general in nature and do not allege any specific prejudice which may result from expanded media coverage" of the hearing, the judge wrote.

Bryant is charged with felony sexual assault against a 19-year-old woman on June 30 at a mountain resort. The Los Angeles Lakers (search) standout has said the sex was consensual and he is guilty only of adultery.

At Wednesday's hearing, Gannett will advise Bryant of the charge against him, of his rights and of the possible penalty. His order said there would be no discussions of evidence or fact-finding.

Allowing cameras in the courtroom won't interfere with the "solemnity, decorum and dignity" of the hearing, he added.

I happen to agree with Kobe's parents. Not about the 22-being-too-young part, people can get married and have a good marriage at that age if they're mature enough; maybe they thought he wasn't mature enough. I agree with them on the part about her being only 18 and doesn't know if she loves his money/fame etc. or him.

Italian Chocolate Co. Won't Renew Deal With Bryant

TRENTON, N.J. (Aug. 4) -- The maker of Nutella chocolate spread said Monday it will not renew its endorsement deal with Kobe Bryant in part because of the sexual assault charge against the NBA superstar.

Ferrero, an Italian company with U.S. headquarters in Somerset, N.J., said it has discontinued all promotions involving the Los Angeles Lakers guard.

"Ferrero U.S.A.'s contract with Kobe Bryant expires in January 2004,'' the company said in a statement. "Marketing plans established earlier this year did not contemplate a contract renewal. In keeping with this decision, and considering the recent developments, Kobe's image on Nutella labels and promotional material is being phased out.''

A call to Bryant's agent, Arn Tellem, was not immediately returned.

Bryant, 24, is charged with sexually assaulting a 19-year-old woman on June 30 at a mountain resort in Edwards, Colo. Bryant has said the two had consensual sex. His initial court appearance is Wednesday.

Until this summer, Bryant was best known as a five-time All Star with one of the most marketable images in professional sports. He has a multimillion-dollar sneaker deal with Nike and contracts with Sprite, McDonald's and Spalding.

Even before he was charged, marketing experts predicted the assault case could cost him more than $100 million in potential earnings.

Nike has said its deal with Bryant remains in place. Coca-Cola Co. spokesman Scott Williamson said Monday that Bryant has been under contract with Sprite since 1997 and remains under contract until 2005.

Bryant had appeared in Sprite commercials through the first week of July, but there are no plans to use him in ads through the end of the year, Williamson said. He said the plan was developed before the sexual assault allegations.

The New York Post reported Monday that Ferrero removed a picture of a Bryant doll and references to the player from its Web site soon after Bryant was charged.

I couldn't disagree more. At 22, Kobe was an adult and old enough to make his own decisions, especially in choosing his own wife.
As for her being 18 and his parents questioning her motives, I say this--shut up and wish your son and his new wife well.
They sound like the type of meddling parents that would second guess any woman he fell in love with.
By not accepting Kobe's wife, a huge rift was created, which most certainly caused problems between the couple.

It appears both Kobe and Vanessa's parents were royal pains in the asses.

LOS ANGELES (Aug. 4) - They met at a music video shoot. She was an 18-year-old high school student working as a background model. He was 21, living in wealthy Pacific Palisades with a huge NBA contract and millions of dollars in endorsement deals.

Six months later, Kobe Bryant and Vanessa Laine were engaged. A year later, in April 2001, they walked over red rose petals to begin their life together.

Even before the accusations of sexual assault against the Los Angeles Lakers' superstar, their marriage had already endured many hurdles.

About a dozen people attended their private wedding ceremony, but the basketball player's parents - Joe and Pam Bryant - weren't among them.

Kobe's parents had already moved back East after living with their only son during his first couple years in the NBA. A rift developed because his parents objected to his marriage to Vanessa.

``I had taken matters into my own hands, marrying my wife so young, they didn't know her,'' Kobe told ABC Sports in June.

After the marriage, his father rarely attended Lakers games and the two reportedly didn't speak to each other for nearly two years.

``Twenty years from now, when his own child grows up, he'll understand what I'm doing,'' Joe Bryant told the Los Angeles Times in an interview in April.

Vanessa's mother, Sofia Laine, also had misgivings.

``Although I was happy for Vanessa, particularly since Kobe is a very kind and respectful young man, their relationship caused a great deal of stress for me,'' she said in court documents filed in her divorce case.

Lakers coach Phil Jackson also questioned the wisdom of such a young person getting married.

Since their marriage, Kobe and Vanessa Bryant led their lives out of the limelight - as much as possible for a celebrity couple.

Their marriage license is a special type covered by confidentiality laws. And it is not known, for example, whether the couple has a prenuptial agreement. Such agreements are private contracts and typically don't become public unless there is a divorce filing.

Kobe Bryant usually keeps to himself when on road trips with the team; and Vanessa rarely attends Lakers games or Hollywood events.

But when her husband was charged with sexual assault, she appeared at a news conference, holding his hand and stroking it tenderly as the NBA star admitted he was guilty of adultery - but nothing else. Earlier, she had issued her own statement to the media, vowing to stand by her husband.

``I know that my husband has made a mistake - the mistake of adultery,'' she said. ``He and I will have to deal with that within our marriage, and we will do so. He is not a criminal.''

The Bryants' representatives will not answer questions, instead referring calls to Kobe's criminal defense attorney, Pamela Mackey. Her office said the couple isn't accepting interview requests. Attorneys in the case are now also under a gag order.

Before they married, court documents show Vanessa's family life was already in turmoil. Her mother and stepfather filed for bankruptcy in 2000, and Vanessa and Kobe helped them out with cash and gifts worth more than $500,000, according to documents filed in the Laines' pending divorce case.

Kobe also paid off a $230,000 mortgage on his in-laws' Garden Grove house, according to the court filings, as well as phone, dental and credit card bills and two car loans.

Then in July 2002, Sofia Laine filed for divorce, claiming in court documents that husband Stephen Laine was ``involved in another relationship.'' They had been married for 12 years.

About a month before the divorce filing, Sofia Laine, who wasn't working because of debilitating back pain, told the court she was no longer receiving cash gifts from Vanessa and Kobe.

The financial support is at issue because Stephen Laine's filings show he believes he should pay less than standard alimony.

``I never represented to my mother that I would `take care of her' financially if she stopped working,'' Vanessa Bryant told the court last September.

Stephen Laine's attorney, Glen Rabenn, said his client would not comment on his stepdaughter, who took his last name in 2000 even though he never adopted her.

``He does not want to offend Vanessa. He loves Vanessa as his own daughter,'' Rabenn said. And he ``thinks the world of Kobe.''

One of Sofia Laine's attorneys, Doreen Olson, didn't return messages.

Kobe and Vanessa Bryant made a rare public appearance Saturday night, attending the 2003 Teen Choice Awards, where he was honored as favorite male athlete. Bryant made a peace sign with his fingers and a thumbs-up gesture, and waved to fans. He also kissed his wife's hand.

Three days after he was charged with sexually assaulting a 19-year-old woman in Colorado, Bryant surprised his wife with a $4 million, eight-carat purple diamond ring while at a Santa Monica jewelry store, according to People magazine. The ring had been commissioned two weeks earlier.

``They looked very happy together,'' jeweler Raffi Kouyoumjin told the magazine.

White supremacists post fliers in response to Bryant case

EAGLE, Colo. (AP) -- A white supremacist group acknowledged Tuesday it left fliers around this mountain community telling whites not to have sex with blacks, and said the fliers were in response to the sexual assault case against NBA superstar Kobe Bryant.

The fliers were mailed or left on lawns and windshields by the West Virginia-based National Alliance. National Alliance spokesman Erich Gliebe said in a telephone interview the Bryant case was "absolutely" the motivation.

"We`re concerned about areas such as Eagle County, where they have a relatively small number of blacks," he said.

The Los Angeles Lakers star, who is black, is charged with assaulting a white 19-year-old hotel worker at a resort in nearby Edwards in June. He has said the sex was consensual.

He said the group plans to distribute more fliers as the case continues.

Eagle County sheriff`s spokeswoman Kim Andree said deputies were investigating, but the only crime that may have been committed was littering.

Earlier Tuesday, Andree said authorities knew of no connection between the fliers and the case against Bryant. She did not return a telephone message Tuesday night after Gliebe`s comments.

District Attorney Mark Hurlbert was not concerned that the fliers would affect the case, spokeswoman Krista Flannigan said. Bryant`s lawyer did not return an after-hours telephone message.

Denver attorney and legal analyst Andrew Cohen said the fliers were not likely to force a change of venue because they reflect the attitudes of outsiders, not people in Eagle.

"If it`s going to get changed, its going to get changed for other reasons -- for pretrial publicity or that too many potential jurors know the victim," he said.

The fliers were headlined "Don`t have sex with blacks." They listed the names of three black men and accused them of lying about carrying HIV when they slept with white women.

The National Alliance was founded by the late William Pierce, author of the racist novel The Turner Diaries that figured prominently in the Oklahoma City bombing case. Pierce left nearly everything he owned to the group when he died of cancer in July 2002.

FBI spokeswoman Ann Atanasio said the agency was monitoring the situation but taking no action.

"There is no threat contained in them," she said of the fliers. "This is apparently a common tactic used by the National Alliance."

Andree would not say whether the National Alliance or other groups had distributed fliers in Eagle before. She did not know how many fliers had been left.

The fliers listed a Denver-area phone number that is answered by a recorded message touting white supremacy. The man on the recording identifies himself as Pierce.

Mayor Roxie Deane called the fliers "totally unacceptable." She received two were mailed to her bearing Denver postmarks.

"We are definitely not racists," Deane said of her town`s 3,500 residents. "In fact, I`ve gone out of my way in interviews to say that. I don`t know if they`re offended by that."

Mark Potok, spokesman for the Montgomery, Ala.-based Southern Poverty Law Center, which monitors white supremacist groups, said the National Alliance often distributes similar fliers.

"They do have a history of coming in to communities where they sense some kind of racial conflict and doing their best to take advantage of that," Potok said. "I think they see that the Kobe Bryant case is getting very different reactions from white America and black America.

"They`re there to exploit that position, they`re hoping white people angered at this alleged rape will join them in their quest."

In December, fliers urging people to join the National Alliance were left on doorsteps and driveways in Colorado Springs. In February 2002, similar fliers bearing the alliance`s name were left in Lakewood, a Denver suburb.

I just read on yahoo.com in the NBA section that his accuser has tried to commit suicide twice. I didn't know that. This must be too much pressure for her to handle from the media. If she can't handle all this attention, she should've never went public with it.
