One thing I always found peculiar about this episode and maybe everyone did, but why is it the Beaver would be surprised by his meal, did they not order it or did they not have menu's in the 1950's I guess when you went out you just ate what they had.... I just always thought that a bit weird.
Sure, they had menus, although there probably were not nearly as many choices as seen today. Wally knew in that scene they had ordred roast beef and wondered aloud if they would get mashed potatoes with it. The entrees likely had a side which is usually eaten with it, and a "vegetable of the day" or a choice of vegetable. The Cleavers, going to a football game, probably all ordered what was either the special or what the waitress said would be ready promptly and the 'vegetable of the day' without even inquiring what it was. It's not a very likely scene today, but it does have credibility at that time (1960).
