A friend of my parents, who used to live in a desert town called Twenty-Nine Palms, once talked about her grandfather. She was born around 1920, so her grandfather went way back, born around 1860.
She said that her grandfather and grandmother lived on a ranch and they and other ranchers actually had to fight to keep it (gunfights). Sometimes a family were able to keep their ranch and sometimes they couldn't (they were outgunned).
