VH1's First-Ever '200 Greatest,' Hosted by 'Sex And The City's' Kristin Davis, Features All-New Interviews with 'A-List' Celebrities including Katie Couric, Jay Leno, Britney Spears, Hugh Hefner, The Osbourne Family and Many, Many, Many Others

Illustrations by Robert Risko

HOLLYWOOD, CA. -- You can quote them in an instant. You know them by name. Something they said or did not only changed your life, but affected American life as a whole. Who are they? They are VH1's "200 Greatest Pop Culture Icons." They are the folks that have significantly inspired and impacted American society and VH1 is celebrating them in an all-star special event.
Too large to be a "100 Greatest" special, for the first-time ever, VH1 will expand its reach and will recognize 200 of America's most outstanding and outrageous personalities with "VH1's 200 Greatest Pop Culture Icons," premiering on Monday, July 21st and airing through Friday, July 25th from 9:00-11:00 p.m. (ET/PT) each night. Each one hour episode is illustrated by Robert Risko, and will take a fun and lighthearted look at the individuals and moments that now live immortally in American pop culture.
Along with VH1, PEOPLE magazine has published a book celebrating the "200 Greatest Pop Culture Icons." This special collector's edition hits newsstands July 14. Filled with beautiful photos and intimate reporting, PEOPLE brings you the divas, the visionaries, the sex symbols and more. From Marilyn and Michael to Elvis and Eminem, you can find them all in PEOPLE's keepsake, available through Labor Day.

What makes an "Icon?" It's not enough to just be famous or have won a couple of awards. You have to pass one or more of the following criteria:

* Do they pass the one-name test?
* Can you dress up as them for Halloween?
* Did they blaze a trail in pop culture?
* Did they create a signature character in pop culture?
* Can you quote them (or their character) in 10 seconds or less? (Do they have a catch phrase?)
* Did society imitate their sense of fashion? Hairstyle?
* Did "SNL" create a sketch satirizing them?
* Did someone write a song about them?
* Was or is there merchandising/paraphernalia that bears their image?
* Can they be connected to Kevin Bacon?

An eclectic group, the list includes: Lucille Ball, Al Pacino, Bill Clinton, Bugs Bunny, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Liberace, Kermit/Miss Piggy, Katherine Hepburn, Oprah Winfrey, Sigmund Freud, Scooby Doo, Muhammad Ali, Wayne Gretsky, Gilligan, James Gandolfini (as Tony Soprano), The Simpsons, Joan Collins, Farrah, Mary Tyler Moore, The Beatles and ... 180 others!!!!!
This special edition of VH1's popular "100 Greatest" franchise, "200 Greatest Pop Culture Icons" also features all-new interviews with Hollywood legends, sports figures, politicians and musical icons. All-star interviews include Katie Couric, Jay Leno, The Osbourne Family, Hugh Hefner, David Lee Roth, Denis Leary, Lisa Marie Presley, William Shatner, Susan Lucci, Britney Spears, Ringo Starr, Kevin Bacon, Penny Marshall and many more.
In a career that has spanned twenty years, Risko's work has been featured on the covers of Vanity Fair, The New Yorker, Rolling Stone, InStyle, Time, Newsweek, The New Republic, and Interview magazines. Risko has drawn the likenesses of hundreds of notables from all walks of life-- film, television,
politics and American culture. He is also the author of The Risko Book, and has illustrated numerous book jackets, video covers, movie posters and CD packages. VH1's "200 Greatest Pop Culture Icons" is his first-ever television endeavor.

What a joke of a list. How can Oprah be number 1 ? What people don't realize is that Oprah is of the moment, not of all time. When her show goes off the air, it won't be airing in syndication for future generations to see and be influenced by. At least if you're a popular musician, people can buy, download, or hear your stuff on the radio for the rest of time. To rank Puff Daddy higher than Kurt Cobain is just idiotic. The only two musicians from the twentieth century who people will still respect fifty years from now are John Lennon and Kurt Cobain because they changed culture and brought music to the level of art.

I agree with you that Kurt Cobain and John Lennon are big music influences and they will always be remembered for how they changed the culture, but P.Diddy produces the biggest names in entertainment. Hes one of the most well known celebrity. I think thats more insane is that Jennifer Lopez is so high rated on the list. I guess cos of the hispanic culture & how she broke thru the barrier or something like that.

Oprah is a self made billionaire. She has a huge talk show and gives millions away to help people. I know shes not the biggest celebrity or the most famous but shes probably the nicest person for what she has done.

All I have to say now is :Yay Lucille Ball is rated #4

That list is whacked, sorry to those that agree with it, though I'm happy that Larry and Barbara are both on it I'm not to happy about what number they got but at least they're on it. I'm a little upset about something else completely different dealing with a famous fan feud and it looks like the side I'm on got the short end of the stick, I could really say something about overrated actors but I best not for the sake of peacesign: But I do say this WHERE THE HECK IS DEIDRE??????????? WHERE THE HECK IS ANY SUPERCOUPLE???? Ugh, these things always make me mad.

Gawd, it's just common sense that Susan is known more than Deidre is. I have nothing against Deidre, but she just isn't someone who everyone knows. I didn't really know who she was either until I read one of your posts. I thought she was a singer. I think its shocking that even Susan made it to the list, and even at such a high number of 74. Way to go Susan!

There are three people whom I feel really DO NOT and I mean DO NOT deserve to be on that list. Gwen Stefani!? Higher than BATMAN?!?!?! RUSSELL FRIGGEN CROWE!??! KEVIN BACON!?!??! What the hell?!?!? All three of them are higher than BATMAN?! Batman has been around since 1939, but this Gwen Stefani gal has been famous since when....the 90s!? That makes absolutely NO sense! Icons have longevity! How can she have longevity if she isn't even much famous now!? Oh yeah, sure, 25 years from now people will be seeing Gwen Stefani as a diva.....PUH-LEASE!!!!!!! Some people don't even know who she is now...

Just common sense , I'm sorry but that's NOT true, maybe to you it is, maybe to some other's here it is, but to a mulitude of others it isn't, it's common sense that Deidre is BETTER than Susan to them. Deidre is well known not only here but also in other countries, for example I have a friend who lives in Norway and she knew who Deidre was before soaps even were broadcast there! And she didn't know who Susan Lucci was till the other day. And no, I didn't tell her who Dee was, she knew. As, I've said before, IMO Susan is overrated. I know Susan gets more attention, but the same things are said about Deidre. People say that Susan is the Queen of Soaps or the Soap Diva, but that is also said about Deidre especially her as Soaps Reigning Diva because you know DEEva. lol. Anyhoo, I guess it makes since that Susan and Deidre fans fight/argue a good bit since the two ladies do that too. lol.

I say we declare The War of the Divas! LOL just kidding. Look, I understand that you think Deidre is a great actress and the Reigning Diva of Soaps, but that's how I feel about Susan. But to tell you the truth, Helen Wagner is the Reigning Diva of Soaps, considering that she's been on ATWT since its inception in 1956. (I think she left for a short time though). Let's just settle it at you loving Deidre and me loving Susan. Point blank. Friends can disagree can't they?

Let's just settle it at you loving Deidre and me loving Susan. Point blank. Friends can disagree can't they?

Yeah, I understand how you feel about Susan it's the same way I feel about Deidre as you have said. I agree, let's just leave it at that. lol. Otherwise will be like this :argue: all the time.
