David Letterman is the funniest man in Late Night.
His comedy runs circles around Leno.

I agree. But Conan is a close second in my opinion.
HuntingtonM15 07-12-2003, 10:38 PM Jay and Conan are my favorites. I don't really like Letterman. I'll watch it occasionally if he has on a guest that I like.
Will and Grace Fanatic 07-12-2003, 10:48 PM Yes, Jay does have the best ratings in late night but Conan is by far the funniest.
Kay Scarpetta 07-12-2003, 11:31 PM No way, no how, never. Conan O'Brien is by FAR the funniest guy on late night TV. If you don't laugh at his show then there's definitely something wrong there...

Yesss. Dont even get me started on my Conan. He is by far the funniest. He takes a lot of risks, but thats because he airs so much later. Lets all gather 'round and watch Coney.
HuntingtonM15 07-12-2003, 11:51 PM It makes me mad that Conan comes on at 1:35 here instead of right after Jay. For some reason, the local NBC here puts on a Jerry Springer episode right after Jay, so I have to wait an extra hour for Conan.

I just wanted to comment on your avator- I saw Traci on 20/20 last night. Sounds like she's been through a hell of a lot

Yeah, she really has. I saw that, too. It didn't even show half of what she's been through. By reading her book, I found out that there's a lot more to her story.

:faint: They make you wait a whole hour?! Pure torture!
Crimson and Clover 07-14-2003, 03:10 AM Conan is the best.
nimrod_86 07-14-2003, 03:34 AM Conan is easily the best. In fact, Late Night is the only talk show I watch.

I know! I often miss it because of that. Maybe I'll start taping it.
¤Graced¤ 07-14-2003, 01:00 PM If you have Comedy Central you can watch the previous night's episode on that channel.
DianeChambers87 07-15-2003, 10:35 AM Conan O'brien!!! Definately!!! I can barely keep awake during Jay's Monologue, Conan is jumping around the stage growling at the camera! He is by far the funniest, and the best interviewer! David Letterman is the second best....leno is not that great....I think he is completely overrated. CONAN RULES!!!!!!!!!! I mean he has his own RERUN (how many NBC or CBS late night shows can say that?) on Comedy Central...that's how funny it is....

Are you sure about that? Jay still has the highest ratings and NUMBERS Do not lie.
DianeChambers87 07-15-2003, 08:01 PM that's because more people are awake from 11:35 to 12:35 than from 12:35 to 1:35

I like Jay and Conan equally, but having higher numbers doesn't make one better than the other.

AND WHY IS THAT?
HuntingtonM15 07-15-2003, 08:38 PM It is a matter of opinion. Y&R has the highest ratings of all the soaps and has for the past 13 years. Though just because it does, you can't say it is the BEST soap.

Doesn't the number of people who watch a show determine how good the show is????? I don't know what you are talking about.

No, it doesn't determine how good a show is. If shows with the highest ratings were the BEST, why don't they win all the awards? The whole thing of whether or not a show is the BEST, is a matter of friggen opinion! You don't know what I'm talking about, because you think you know everything. Once you get an idea in your head, you make up endless crap about it to "support" that it's the truth. I don't really care what you think about it anymore. You will always think you know everything, so I'll just let that be.

Ever since shows like Laverne and Shirley beat out Three's Company.
I'm only bringing that up because you couldn't understand why Three's Company didn't have as high of ratings as Laverne and Shirley, because you thought Three's Company was better. Just like some people think shows like CONAN are better than the highest rated LENO!
I watch Leno sometimes, but I definitely prefer Letterman and Conan.

Okay, I understand that. And I'm sure Jay has a bigger lead of ratings than L&S and TC, because L&S just had a slight lead. My point was, just because something or someone draws in more ratings doesn't nessarily mean it is the "best" in quality. Sure Leno is the "best" in ratings, but as far as I'm concerned that's all he's the best at. It takes a lot more to make someone "the king" in my book. You know that with a subject title like that people are gonna post strongly disagreeing. LOL.
¤Graced¤ 07-20-2003, 02:50 PM Really this is all a matter of PERSONAL OPINION. I'm not gonna sit here and say "well a show with the highest ratings doesn't mean its the best," because its a lost cause. Sitcom Analyzer started this thread by saying he himself thinks Jay Leno is the king of late night. When you start a thread like that its open for people to discuss and disagree/ or agree with the thesis. Really Sitcom analyzer shouldn't get all smart and go Jay is the best and thats the end because people have different tastes. I could go all into the endless load of crap by going well this show had lower ratings and was better than this show with higher ratings because it will just get bombarded with this so called "proof" by Sitcom Analyzer. The moral of this is, people can like different things and when you put up a post saying something is the best, Expect it to be debated.
Well that's my two cents

roscoe420 07-28-2003, 05:12 PM First of all Jay Leno is the worst, all he does is rag on the same people day in and day out and he's really not that funny. Conan is by far the best he has the best monologe, interviewing, skits and he is edgy unlike big headed Leno.
And what about craigers?
stevedqfan 08-12-2003, 12:17 AM Conan only does 4 show a week while other late night hosts does the standard 5 shows a week. I don't understand why conan dosen't have a new show on monday like all the other late night host.

It must be a Late Night thing. When Letterman was hosting Late Night, he only did shows Monday-Thursday and had Fridays off.
duffaholic 09-06-2003, 01:54 AM Good news huntington, starting in late sept, wdiv detroit will begin airing conan at 12:37 like most other stations in the eastern time zone.
treky 09-07-2003, 04:21 AM I remember, back when David Letterman started in late night back in 82, he was on at 12:30-at least, in the east-on NBC, & our local NBC station didn't show it. Instead they showed reruns of "Hawaii 5-0", & after a lot of people complained, they started to show it, but at 1:30, AFTER "Hawaii 5-0". Then, people still complanied cause they showed it too late for a lot of people. So then, they moved "H 5-0" to saturday afternoons, and they FINALY put Letterman at 12:30.
phoebe7165 09-10-2003, 12:42 AM I like Jay and all, but I think Conan is so hilarious!! Triumph, Masturbating Bear, Raymond, Ahh-nold, all a riot. Conan imitating Anna Nicole Smith is always so funny. Whenever he tells an Anna Nicole joke in his monologue, I start laughing even before he starts imitating her. It never gets old.
theanswerman 10-08-2003, 12:36 PM conan is by far my favoirite, he is very very funny adn talented. plus its so funny to see him jump around and make faces in the camera and triumph the insult comic dog and in the year 2000. wow, conan is awesome.
soup4kittys 10-11-2003, 04:50 AM Dave All The Way.
20 + years of being on Network Television in the age of cable, satellite, internet, and short paitence level. Record # of Emmy's, Peabody Award...cover of Time Magazine, Life, Newsweek, and has been on the cover of Rolling Stone more than any other Non-Musical Entertainer. Number 7 on the list of TV GUIDES "50 best shows" above his idol Carson.
And what would tv be today if it wasn't for:
The Top Ten List, Peace Through Dramatization, Walking On The Streets, Supid Human/Pet Tricks, Mail Bag, Flunky The Clown...
His pissing off guest like:
Cher, Shirley McClaine, Cindy Crawford, Crispin Glover, Lawrence Oliver (a favorite of mine), etc...
Infamous Guest like:
Madonna, Farrah Fawcet, Marv Albert, Hillary Clinton...
His touching comback after "Open Hear t Surgery", his HONEST 9-11 post show, who else would have a guy with one arm on during Sweeps before Toby Maguire??
Just Dave.
For those who thought Conan's show was pretty crazy, y'all should see Dave's Old Show back in the day. 360 degree angle show, the Monkey Cam, Dave does his show at his house, in the shower with Teri Garr, on the highway (as Paul was in the back of another Truck), the time he filled the entire audience with Chinese people who don't speak english, Dog Sled Races down the hall way, Filled the studio full of Midgets, the infamous velcro suit, airing the entire show in Spanish, oh God...the list goes on..Old Dave is my personal favorite, but I still the think the new Dave is pretty good.
The reason Leno's show is higher ratings is because it's friendlier, more mainstream, colorful, bouncy makes you feel good.
Dave's show can make you feel uncomfortable, you have to think in order to get what he's saying, it's darker and very odd at times (maybe a little too odd). Sometimes it's works and sometimes it doesn't...but Dave is always on. Dave is the Man!!
...and YES Conan is 2nd:)

I watched bits of the old Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, and I didn't laugh once. I never found him very funny. The same goes for Jay Leno. To me, he's just not funny.
However, Conan O'Brien is the best. Followed by David Letterman. People are just now coming to Conan, and NBC is starting to treat the show better, but I've been watching him on and off since 1993. Conan was so much funnier in the 1990's. Once he lost Andy Richter, the show lost a lot. He's still funny, but I can always sense something missing.
1st Place = Late Night with Conan O'Brien
2nd Place = Late Show (Late Night) with David Letterman
3rd Place = Late Late Show with Craig Kilborn
4th Place = The Jimmy Kimmel Show
5th Place = Tonight Show with Johnny Carson
6th Place = Tonight Show with Jay Leno
I have never seen the other hosts of the Tonight Show. I believe Steve Allen was the original host, though.
Of course everything I've said is my OPINION. If you like Jay Leno the best, then that's great. But when it comes that time for me to choose between Leno and Letterman, I'll always choose good ole David Letterman.
PZelda 10-22-2003, 02:17 PM Conan will always be first and Jay Leno second in my book. I've been watching both of them on and off since 1995/96 (when I was 10). Conan was only in his 3rd season when I started watching him, so I remember a lot of early-day Conan stuff. He didn't have Truimph (sp?) the Comic Insult Dog or any of the things he had back then- He didn't start to do his famous "In the Year 2000" song until about 1997 or so. I am over in the Central timezone, so for me, Jay Leno comes on at 10:35 and Conan at 11:35, so it's a reasonable time for me to tune in. I like both shows, but IMO Conan is the best. I've known about David Letterman since like 1990 or so (and can remember when he had BROWN HAIR), but in the whole time I've been watching late night (more than 8 years now), I think I might have tuned in to David Letterman maybe only three times.
So, what I mean by this is, I like both Jay & Conan, but I will always like Conan more than I like Jay. He's one of those types (to me) that I CAN stand, I like him, but he's not my #1 fave, you know what I'm getting at?
Solomon, Jay Leno may be king of ratings, but I don't like him THAT much. Conan rocks MY world more. :)

Don't forget the time Drew Barrymore flashed him on his show. I saw that ep.
EricIdlefan 11-05-2003, 03:57 PM David may have a sense of humor but he can play hard to get and be very arrogant and rude to the stars that guest and he rarely grants interviews and can seem kind of snobbish.
Jimmy Kimmel brings his "Man Show" act but there are two differences: It's on network as opposed to cable and Jimmy had to tone down his act for tv so that the censors wouldn't jump all over him.
Jay Leno and his humor may not be my cup of tea but I heard he is much more nicer to the stars who guests on the show and he is very, very accessible to the media.
Conan O' Brien started his show back in 1993 on a shaken and uneasy note but then the audience and Conan warmed up to each other and he went from being stiff and uncomfortable at first but then he took off before you know it!!
Craig Kilborn can act like a smart aleck at times but his five questions(from his former hosting the Daily Show) are a riot!!!!

nimrod_86 12-01-2003, 08:02 PM Conan all the way. Back in the day Letterman was the best, but now his edge, and humor have worn off. Conan is still fresh, funny, and hilarous. Leno is a hack, and a joke. His show is tired and predictable, he makes the same jokes all the time, only about different celebritys. As for Craig, well, I am apathetic about him.
