View Full Version : Gloria's Immaturity
KayEn78 07-11-2003, 11:15 PM When I was watching the episode "Mike Meets Archie," I noticed how immature Gloria was in this episode. When she said was going to marry Mike (the way she was talking/yelling at Archie), I thought, "She's so immature, and not ready for marriage...acting like a child like that." Can anyone think of any other instances of when Gloria was immature? She hit Archie on the head quite a few times, now that's very immature. This could be an interesting topic....

Yeah i think Gloria's Whinning and Moaning and Crying was the only thing that bothered me when I watched all in the Family.
ConservativeBalla 07-13-2003, 01:58 PM But you've gotta admit that in the Season 1 episode "Archie Gives Blood", when everyone's arguing at the table while playing Monopoly and Gloria half-cries out "It's my tuuurn!" is funny.

The only time Gloria made me laugh is when Mike was telling Archie that Back people have Arrived and Archie said I'm not letting them in, and then Gloria says-" Not Here, HERE!!!!!!!!!!-She stands up and acts all crazy
mstewart 07-17-2003, 10:39 PM Episode #11 - Gloria Discovers Women's Lib. She showed a lack of respect for her parents by speaking to them in an underminding manner and throwing temper tantrums.
Episode #61 - Battle of the Month. An adult child living at home being that unruly toward her parents like Gloria was calling Archie stupid and narrow minded pig and telling her mother she is nothing. That would have been grounds of being kicked out of the house.
Episode #138 - The Unemployment Story. Gloria, again, yelling at Archie.
I find it disturbing to find Gloria, being an adult married woman living under her parents roof with her husband, does not respect her parents. Some parents would had told their adult kid to move out if they don't agree with the way things are. Frankly I thought Mike was an immature jerk as well.
KayEn78 07-17-2003, 10:47 PM Those are good points to bring up. Gloria was very disrespectful toward her parents at times. Remember in "Gloria Sings the Blues" when she yells, "I don't want to end up like the two of you!" and storms up the stairs. I'm sure Archie and Edith felt very hurt, I mean, they did the best they could.

I forgot about that one. She was not respectful toward her husband. But at the same time he did treat her as though she was stupid. A person with only a high school diploma does not make a person stupid. HELLO the woman worked while her husband went to school. Gloria was smart but very sacrificing as well. I find that to be a good quality for a person to put on hold thier own plans so the spouse can pursue their dream.

I just watched this episode. Gloria is indeed very immature. I would NEVER talk to my father like that. And the way she always whined to Edith. She sounded like she was six years old. I love when Archie is singing God Bless America. Mike was being the immature child then.
DetectiveGriffin 08-14-2003, 03:06 PM I thought Mike and Gloria were both very immature throughout the series. I'm not saying it in a bad way, a lot of people are like that, but they were definately all into that, "if it feels good, do it no matter what the consequences". It makes it less surprising that they eventually divorced -- one of them was bound to whip around and say, "I can't deprive myself - I have to have this or that."
Pug Lover 11-07-2003, 10:12 PM I always got a kick out of the way Gloria used to cry like a baby.It was hilarious.I usually couldn,t help laughing whenever she would break down into her silly crying routine. She was pretty funny.
GeeBee 11-08-2003, 02:49 AM In the case of Archie, there really wasn't much for Gloria TO respect.
Pug Lover 11-08-2003, 04:40 PM I think the trouble with Gloria was,she didn,t have enough life experience. She had obviously lived all her life with her parents before she was married. And then she remained living under her parents, roof for the first five years of her marraige. The following three and a half years, she only lived next door.In a way,she didn,t get a chance to really grow up,if you know what I,m saying. It seems that it wasn,t until the Stivics moved out to California, when Gloria got her first taste of living independently out in the real world.Having never lived so far away from her parents before.By the time she got her own short lived series in the fall of 82,she had matured somewhat.I never saw her do any of her silly crying on that show. She was now a divorced mother, raising her son Joey on her own.Big difference from her situation on All In The Family.I know that by this time Mike,s portrayer Rob Riener, had become a movie director. He even directed my favourite movie"Stand By Me".

Yeah there was a ig difference in the Gloria character on her spinoff. I guess Gloria had no choice but to mature after Mike left her.

It's amazing how two people can watch the same show and come to completely different conclusions. I always thought Archie was a bully who needed to be told off. If anything, Gloria went easy on him. When you talk about respect, you have to consider the circumstances. It wasn't exactly "Father Knows Best". Gloria grew up in a household headed by a very ignorant man who had no respect for anyone, not even his own wife. You get back from your children what you give to them.

Absolutely!Very well said.I couldn,t have said it better myself.:)
mstewart 12-03-2003, 09:59 PM If you were to watch the Archie and Gloria relationship there was a deep bond betwen. The relationship was real and genuine because Sally Struthers stated in many interviews that Carroll O'Connor was like a father figure to her. The moments between Archie and Gloria brought tears many times especially when Archie went to comfort Gloria after she miscarried. That was a powerful scene.
As for her relationship with Edith there was an unspoken resentment that Gloria had toward Edith. Many times you would see Gloria mad because Edith would not stand up to Archie. In real life if an adult child, living under the parents roof, would speak to a parent the way she spoke to Edith in the episode Battle of the Month they would had been tossed out in half a heartbeat.
The character of Gloria was in her early 20's. That is a searching age during the run of All in the Family in the first five seasons.

In some families that might happen, but certainly not in all of them.

I posted to this comment or one similar to it in another thread but it bears repeating. I don't know the age or sex of this poster, but I have to say your comment is ridiculous. I hope you're not a woman because you'd be insulting to all women who suffer from PMS or emotional changes during "that time of the month." Regardless, we all have *moments*, whether emotionally or hormonally challenged, where we say mean things to our parents or relatives. You may live in a "perfect" family, but most of us do NOT. No loving mother would "toss out" her child in a heartbeat for being in a bad mood or speaking her mind when she isn't feeling well. It happens. The point of this episode was to call attention to this very normal and basic fact of life.
Pug Lover 12-04-2003, 01:20 PM I couldn,t agree with you more Viola_Fuss.It seems that most families are quite disfunctional.Which probably explains how All In The Family had outdone The Partridge Family in ratings, back in the early 1970s.All In The Family was the most realistic TV sitcom to date. And going back to what this writer said about an unspoken resentment Gloria supposedly had toward her mother.I never thought such a thing existed.I always found Mike and Gloria to get along better with Edith by far, than with Archie.Gloria did have her share of loving moments with Archie, that much is true. But I always found her relationship with Edith to be way more loving.Which would be only natural, going by how opposite Archie and Edith were.Nobody got along very well with Archie.Whereas everybody got along incredibley well with Edith.

Edith was extremely likable, but I think everyone, at some point, could get a little frustrated about how much she'd put up with from Archie.
Pug Lover 12-05-2003, 12:22 AM Yes!I know what you mean.It sometimes made me mad the way Archie treated Edith, and I can see where Gloria was coming from,on the occasions where she tried to encourage her mother to stand up to her father.I have a friend who is a lot like Edith in that way.He puts up with so much unneccesary and inexcusable flack from this friend of his.I don,t know why he even stays friends with this person.Unfortunately some people are just too nice to stand up for their rights. And they get taken advantage of so easily.:(
