View Full Version : Nancy McKeon Intimate Portrait Reviews....
jayman75 01-05-2001, 08:35 PM Well, it's about halfway through now... and this is really enjoyable. I tried to get into Phil McKeon's website ( http://www.e-icons.com/ ), but it's not up and running yet.
As for TFOL, it sounds like she enjoyed it, but is afraid of being stereo-typed again as Jo. Can't say as I blame her.
And I laughed when Valerie Harper said that she was type-cast as the "battered woman," because someone in another topic compared her to Valerie Bertinelli, the *queen* of battered woman, made-for-TV movies.
So, what do/did you all think of the show??

DramaQueenTootie 01-05-2001, 09:01 PM i loved it! I can't wait to see her upcoming series. I think that they should have interviewed the FOL girls especialy Lisa.
I liked the whole story about the tobasco sauce thing! that was so hilarious. She has had an awsome career I wish my acting career would get a jump start like hers has!

That was great, and the tabasco prank sounded funny too.
I loved it! She seems to really have her priorities staright and knows what she wants to accomplish in life.
I too wish the FOl girls would have been interviewed. Then we could have heard some behind the scene's stories!
I'm also now anticipating "The Division" even more!

jayman75 01-05-2001, 09:25 PM That was the only disappointing part, that NO ONE from TFOL, except Rocco, spoke about Nancy. I didn't realize she and Whelchel ever lived together.
Did it say if she was dating anyone now? I heard them say that the guy she met on a movie was gone, but I had company, so I didn't get to catch the whole part. I'll watch my tape later....

Jo-Po Rox 01-05-2001, 09:35 PM Nancys IP was great wasnt it and let me just say, her brother is quite cute http://www.sitcomsonline.com/ubb/biggrin.gif I especially loved the part where Nancys practicing Martial Arts. Shes only a green belt though but u can tell she has drive. Man I cant wait till The Divisions premiere.
jayman75 01-05-2001, 10:19 PM You know... it's just a thought, but maybe we should all write lifetime and tell them how much we enjoyed the Intimate Portraits of McKeon and Fuqua (sp). Reason I say that is because The Golden Girls has been on lifetime for YEARS, and I'm surprised it's still going. Maybe after N@N gets "done" with The Golden Girls, lifetime could pick up the option, and run TFOL there? At least lifetime give their sitcoms a full hour each.
Just a thought...

I like the idea, jayman. I think they would actually consider it Especially if "The Division" is a hit. Maybe then they would do an "Intimate Portrait" on all the FOL girls!

Michele35 01-05-2001, 11:28 PM Hey, that was me that referred to some of Nancy's post-FOL movies as very Valerie Bertinelli-ish woman in peril stuff. It seemed as if Nancy thought the same thing, lol!
I was thinking that Lifetime would be a perfect fit for 'fol' since they already run 'Golden Girls' about the geriatric set and 'Designing Women' which centers around middle aged women. Now they only need FOL to cater to the teenage crowd.
Anyway, just viewed my Nancy 'IP' tape but I didn't see them mention any current boyfriends although it seems as if she is being very private about matters of the heart after going public in TVGuide in 1995 about her then current love. Can't say that I blame her. They didn't really spend much time focusing on her 'FOL' days http://www.sitcomsonline.com/ubb/frown.gif
Seems like she is trying to avoid being typecast although most of her fans love her because of the 'Jo' character.
Overall, the IP was good but they seemed to want to focus more on the 'Division' and the movies she starred in that they play on Lifetime instead of any "FOL" stuff. The only other FOL'er that they interviewed other than her 'father' was her karate buddy that only had a cameo in one episode. It would've been nice to know if she at least keeps in touch with the old gang from FOL although it seems she does keep in touch with Michael J.
BTW, I thought her brother was way cuter back in his 'Alice' days.

Tootie: Muffy? Her name is Muffy? What kind of person is named Muffy?
Jo: Beats me, Tootie.
jayman75 01-05-2001, 11:55 PM Michele --
I thought it started with an "M," but I couldn't remember. Glad you posted a reply.
One thing I've noticed about many of McKeon's photos lately. She doesn't smile. Now, I understand "The Division" as a serious show, but when they do the walk-up in the commercial, she almost looks plastic. Her hair is weird, her eyes are *sharp*, and she just looks PO'd at the world. Yet, when she was talking in the IM, she laughed and smiled. She is truly very attractive.
Phil, on the other hand, needed to stay his age on Alice. Yikes... http://www.sitcomsonline.com/ubb/smile.gif
One more thing -- I can see why McKeon would not be as gung-ho to do a FOL reunion. D. Joy Levine commented on how, in Toronto, the people shouted out to her "JO! JO! JO!" To me, that's like saying "We can only accept you as this!" Perhaps she will reconsider, but I understand her feelings.
Thoughts??

Michele35 01-06-2001, 12:23 AM Jayman,
On the other hand if most of her fans love her because of the 'Jo' character it seems almost unfair to her 'public' to totally disassociate herself from the character. I have a feeling she considers the movies(and probably FOL which was a similar type character for her) she did during that time to be 'cheesy' as she phrased in her 'IP.' The question is why was she willing to do the 'Style and Substance' sitcom (which sucked by all accounts) but seems to want nothing to do with a role that she grew up with?
I also noticed the 'plastic' look for the "Division" ads with the hair, (nosejob I believe), black clothes, etc. I think it is just a look she wants to portray for this serious role. You don't really see much laughing or joking on NYPD Blues and other similar type shows of the same genre. Although I will say that she did give a totally 'Jo-like' laugh during one segment of the 'IP'. I was happy to see that she is so happy now despite the look we see in 'The Division' ads.
On a side note, I thought it a bit strange that she was talking about the rough period she had when she first moved to Hollywood and not being able to find work. For God's sake, she was 10 years old! It seems like she put alot of pressure on herself at a young age.
JoBlaiRNaTooT 01-06-2001, 12:45 AM u think she got a nose job? i thought that too when i saw a picture of her on the "E! True Hollywood Story," but i figured it was just lighting or something.

josthebest 01-06-2001, 01:11 AM I agree they should've spent more time on her FOL days. The way they hyped the other Lifetime show, The Division, made the whole IP seem too opportunistic. Not that I'm complaining. Nancy struck me as smart, funny and of course gorgeous in the interview segments. But since she's private about her love life, that was a huge area of off-limits material and it kinda showed. I mean, pardon the expression but as biographies go, her IP wasn't too "juicy." I thought they'd at least have something about the hockey player she lived with, but instead they talk about her and Lisa living together. Oh well, it IS her private life.
I heard she had a nose job as well. Can anyone confirm this.

Stanley Roper: I'm sorry Jack
Jack Tripper: Oh, thats ok, what did you do?
Roper: Me? Nothing, I just thought I saw something that wasnt normal, because it was normal, but, now I can see it aint normal, so, everything's back to normal again.
Jack: oh, well, I'm glad for you.
RoyalTwrlr 01-06-2001, 02:07 AM Hey everyone! I just watch the IP, I was baby-sitting when it came on and had to tape it. I thought it was really good! The pictures of her when she was younger were adorable! They also mentioned my other favorite show that i never get to see cuz of my schedual, "The Nanny". I was addicted to that show for like 3 years until they started showing it while I was at school.
Anyways, back to Lifetime. Someone mentioned that after N@N maybe they could pick it up. That would be awesome. I know they have the rights to "The Nanny" starting in 2002. Though having the show on lifetime would be cool, it is probably more likely that the show will be Passed on to TVLand. This seems to be where all of the older N@N shows have gone to.
Well, now I am going to bed! Well, at least to watch TV! Bye!

Shorty-104 01-06-2001, 02:09 AM I thought the Nancy 'IP' was good but you would of thought they would have more on TFOL considering she spent 8 years on the show. And they should of mentioned if she keeps in touch with them or not.
coily2 01-06-2001, 02:35 AM Well, I missed the last 10 minutes or so, but I saw the part that I was interested in. My thoughts have already been covered by previous posters, but I'll recap anyways.
1. I take back the statement I made earlier about wondering if Phil was gay. He aged quite niceley (Sorry Michele/Jay... Alice era Phil was just too much of an awkward teen)
2. I was wondering if she got her nose done too... If she did, I don't really care for the shape
3. Since we were talking about it the other day, I was listening for the New York accent, and it came out sometimes during the interview, probably when she was a little more relaxed and wasn't aware that she was doing it.
4. The lack of FOL coverage disappointed me. It was such a large part of her life, not to mention a defining era of her career, and I feel bad that they didn't cover more of it.
EastLand_Girl 01-06-2001, 03:33 AM I thought it was good too. I mean I thought they could of talked about TFOL more then they did. I wonder why none of the other FOL girls were interviewed. hmm.. Okay, I to thought her nose looked a lil different. Anyway, she seems nice. http://www.sitcomsonline.com/ubb/smile.gif http://www.sitcomsonline.com/ubb/smile.gif
Shorty-104 01-06-2001, 03:37 AM I met Nancy and Lisa 2 weeks ago they are quit nice
Michele35 01-06-2001, 11:01 AM Didn't mean to cause an uproar over the nose job comment. Plastic surgery is so common in L.A. and it is pretty rare to find anyone connected to Hollywood who hasn't had some sort of plastic surgery. It was just something I noticed when they showed older pictures of her and then flashed back to her interview on 'IP'.Anyway, I think she looks great and also seems to have a very nice personality.
She also seems to be very private not only about her social life but also about her other views since she wouldn't comment on the Bonanno Family...guess I can't blame her there. Regarding "TFOL" stuff the only episode she really commented on was the suicide episode. Seems she is proud of that one even though N@N has refused to show it so far.
gottaluvJo 01-06-2001, 11:30 AM michele- when did nancy ever talk about the suicide ep.? I wathced the IP 2 1/2 times and i never heard her talk about any FOL eps. in particular.
Also- to whoever said nancy looked cute when she was younger, i think so too. im not being gay, but she was really cute when she was young (but she has always been pretty good looking) like i said, im not gay (cuz im a gurl) but who can argue?

Michele35 01-06-2001, 12:44 PM GottaluvJo, I may have been wrong. Maybe it was her friend/hair stylist Phil Ackerman that was commenting on the Jo stuff. Maybe I'll watch the tape again if I get time later.
I'm_NMK 01-06-2001, 01:19 PM I too think that they should havve said a little more about fol, or at least said whether or not she kept in touch with other cast members (they did on almost every other work she did) I also think she may have had a nose job - she looks so very different now! If she did, I think she looked better w/o it, not that she looks ugly or anything - I just don't think she should have had one. (maybe it wasn't anose job though - maybe it's aging?) Oh! Something I realized when they showed a clip from the divison (when she woke up and was struggling to get ready) - I have the same boots!! I just thought that was cool! Overall, i think the IP was good, but it should have included a little more of the fol b/c it was such a substancial part of her career and like (I mean, 8 years, hello!) ok. i've said my peace. bye.
