This anime is about a 14 year old delinquent, Yusuke Urameshi who didn't hold out much hope for the future. He didn't attend class often and when he did, he would skip class and hide out on the roof. The girl he grew up with, Kayko would always tell him to get to class and that he was giving the school a bad reputation. The teachers hated him and he hated the teachers.

The only joy he ever really got was in beating up his rival Kuwabara.

Then, one day, Yusuke was hit by a car while saving a little boy who was playing in the street.

He awoke as a ghost and was greeted the sprightly Botan, who identified herself as the Grim Reaper.

Botan explained to Yusuke that a place hadn't been prepared for him in the Spirit World because no one expected him to die that day. Because of this fact, and in honor of his noble deed, he was given a chance to have his life back.

Yusuke, however refused the opportunity, saying the world would be a lot better without him and that he kinda liked being a ghost. Botan said she would let him think about it while at his wake.

While there, he saw the suffering of his loved ones and realized even kuwabara needed him. So, he decided to accept Botan's offer.

Yusuke was taken to the Spirit World to receive his ordeal from the ruler of the spirit realm, Koenma.

With the help of his loved ones on Earth and Botan, he was soon resurrected and rejoind his family and friends. But Koenma wanted something more from the boy.

While Yusuke began to enjoy being among the living again, he watched a gang leader, Sakamoto harassing Kuwabara, forcing him to steal and do other things that go against his all-important Honor Code. He noticed Sakamoto had horns! Yusuke makes his appearance and for the first time, fights on Kuwabara's side.

While Kuwabara's gang takes care of the other gang, Yusuke chased after the cowardly Sakamoto. He quickly beat him.
Yusuke captured the demon that tryed to escape from sakamoto's body.

Botan, in human form, explained to Yusuke that the demon was a notorious criminal who burrows into the dark parts of humans and makes them do cruel things. Yusuke's spirit awarness allowed him to catch the criminal before he even knew the crime. Koenma, very impressed, gave Yusuke the job of Spirit Detective. He would be responsible for tracking down and stopping demons who escape to the human realm.

Very soon, Yusuke would help the demon kurama. Kurama was a Fox Demon and master theif. 15 years ago he had been wounded by a craft hunter; probably another Spirit Detective. He escaped to the living world and merged with an unborn human baby, knowing that if he could let his spirit heal from it's injuries for 10 years, he would be safe. But he began to feel love for his human mother and, when she became ill, felt the need to stay and help her. He stole an artifact from Spirit World and thus, met Yusuke.

The artifact would restore Kurama's mother's health in exchange for his life. Yusuke could not allow him to do that after seeing is own mother grieve over his death. He asked the artifact to take his life instead. It spared both lives and restored Kurama's mother.

The Urameshi Team would later be formed with Yusuke, Kuwabara, Kurama and another reformed demon, Hiei. Each brought an unique element to crime fighting.

This is one of my favorite animes. Gee, that was a lot to write!

yay another anime that I've seen/heard of. Its not one of my favorites but its on my list of anime I want to see more of. (with another 20 something titles lol) I've only seen the first part of the dub (that I sometimes get the feeling cartoon network keeps replaying just when they start getting to the later episodes O_o) and the manga is really good. My favorite characters are Kurama,Hiei and Botan.

I only watch them on Cartoon Network when I have no other choice. Basically, I most enjoy them by buying uncut versions through Amazon. It get's expensive and there are long stretches between release dates, but to me it is well worth it. I think it has made me a bit of an anime snob, I don't like to watch the edit anymore!

Botan kinda' get's on my nerves sometimes. My favorites are Kurama, Yusuke, Genkai and Hiei. Mostly Kurama. What can I say? He's cool!

Do you know of anyone who actual likes Koenma? I've scoured the net and have found nothing. Same for Kuwabara. Poor Kazuma... I mean, sure he can be a bit of an idiot most of his waking moments, but he's got an Honor Code!

By the way, what anime is the lady in your signature from?

That's why I get stuck having to watch the dub. Its really expensive (for me at least) especially on Amazon. I thought about buying the box set of all the episode off of an anime site but even there it was too much. *sigh* well maybe one day.

Koenma annoys me. *shrugs* I've never seen any fansites or anything for him either.

Hiei is my absolute favorite character! He posseses a dark power that comes from deep within that is frightening to the other characters even though he is on their side. I could watch the episode titled Dragon of the Darkness Flame over and over. . . and his utter control is unnerving. Just knowing that he has such power pent up inside him and such daring to delve even deeper despite the potential cost. That plus the other characters surely must realize that none of them could defeat him if ever he turned against them!
