View Full Version : Which do you prefer...
peter may 07-08-2003, 05:24 AM The full WINGS theme or the little jingle at the start of later episodes
I have just seen the new one, and I think its great...WINGS just keeps getting better and better
I think I 'm the only one in England who even know what WINGS is;) ..such a shame!
pilotguy 07-08-2003, 07:11 AM Oh Peter, please don't get me started on THIS!
Based on what other people here have posted, I'm apparently in the minority when I say that I prefer the full theme opening of the earlier episodes.
I know that the newer "short jingle" opening gives you an extra minute or so of story while the titles are superimposed over the action, but that full opening gives you a better "feel" of Nantucket and gives real atmosphere to the show's setting.
As for the theme music itself, as Lowell Mather would say as he sits in a completely dark room: "It's RELAXING!"
phoebe7165 07-08-2003, 07:41 AM Well, pilotguy, I'm in that minority, too, because I love the theme song over the cold opener anyday. That's why I was so happy when they decided to use the theme song again for the final episode and include EVERYBODY in the cast credits at the beginning. One thing though, I don't ever remember at the very beginning showing the lighthouse. When I started watching it on N@N is when I first saw it, I don't even remember NBC showing it, and I would've remembered something like that.

Really? EVERYBODY was listed in the final episode's cast credits? Even Thomas Haden Church and Farrah Forke? If so, that was a REAL touch of class!
wingshock 07-08-2003, 08:52 AM I realize that with it only being a 30 minute show, the long theme song was probably a time-waster... but I loved it too. It definitely set the mood for the show and it was beautiful.
Also like on The X-Files, they had the same kind of format (which never changed): Teaser, full theme song w/ credits, then the show. Wings had the same format in the beginning, which really does help get you in the mood for the show.
But, like I said... when you only have 30 minutes (20 with commercials, probably) that extra 30 seconds or so is pretty prime real estate.
Love,
Wing<><
Chocoholic 07-08-2003, 09:21 AM I do think the theme music is pretty (This coming from somebody who really doesn't care too much about theme songs.) but I like the extra minute of action.
losthighway 07-08-2003, 07:17 PM Me too Snoopy. The original opening is nicely shot but it's a little to stagnent for my taste. And I do like clever openings such as what Cheers did but as far as Wings goes I much prefer getting more acutal time for the show.
spunkygirl 07-08-2003, 10:43 PM I like both. I think I like the first one a little bit better because it's so pretty. Yes it's relaxing too :)
losthighway 07-08-2003, 11:26 PM I'm going to throw in an old taped episode with the original opening, turn off all the lights and relax, just like Pilotguy and Topanga suggest:)
I do like the original opening. I especially like that the footage was shot around Nantucket. (I've never been there of course but I've been told that many of the exteriors in the show and especially that opening flying sequence are all from the Nantucket area)
Aeromass pilot probably knows for sure.
Kris10m 07-09-2003, 01:50 AM I really love the original long opening and the theme song...it really sets the mood for the show, and it's a beautiful piece written by Schubert. Even though the short opening leaves more time for the actual show, I still prefer the longer beginning.
Krista2882 07-09-2003, 08:38 AM I don't know which I like better. hehe.
It's cool to have a full opening... but the song is kinda long. It's a good song, but it's kinda long for the opening of a show..
and I also like the extra time the show has without the full song. so hmmmmmmmm... i still don't know. hehe

Ice Cream Man 07-09-2003, 05:08 PM I wonder if Wings was part of the revolution back in the day that started episodes using short theme jingles to start a show. I like the short Wings jingle because it meant 30 seconds more show time. I like the longer title in the earlier episodes because for me it helps to distinguish the earlier years and the later ones.
There are a lot of shows that do a short jingle to start their shows nowadays. The one I can think of right off is "Everybody Loves Raymond".
