as the doctor lady said, the pills arent addictive. They make the imbalance in the brain somewhat better by blocking some of the lil thingys that cause the imbalance. Most pills for depression (paxil and all related meds excluded) are not addictive and are safe if stopped suddenly. The others just require tapering down over time, but are safe to stop.

Those pills aren't addicitive. They are like the lady said the pills aren't to get high on they are to just help you help yourself.

The pills are an escape for the writers if Nancy for some crazy reason decides to leave the show in the fourth season...

Also, upon meeting her brothers killer it'll be between those pills or others. Could be interesting...

actually, no... you cant become dependant on something unless it does something to your body that changes it so you would get very sick or die without it. there is a huge difference between drugs and medications. the medications most people are put on, especially alcohalics and people with substance abuse problems, are made so they change small things that your body would still fuction properly without. it is healthier to take the medications, but you wont go through withdrawl symptoms if you stop suddenly.

i know they'll make her addicted. somehow or another. she may not become addicted to these ones, but she may start thinking that if she's okay with these pills, she will be with others.

i really hated the way the doctor forced her to take the pills, while she was crying....

You can actually be dependent on a number of things from pills that are supposed to help you with your nerves to pain pills. Actually my mother was addicted to Davrocet and they are just a pain killer. Pain pills doesn't do something to your body that changes it so get very sick or die without it. But it can cause you to die from being addicted to them. My Grandma took what is called Xanax (which is a nerve pill and when they tried to switch the pills even though she took them according to directions) she shook with the Ativan they put her on. She couldn't stop shaking and she never did that with Xanax. So my opinion is that pills are addictive no matter what they are for.

Thats what I was thinking too. You'd think that if you could become addicted to something such as gambling, which doesnt inject anything into your bloodstream at all, you could get addicted to anything that you could put into your body, a.k.a., the anti-depressants or whatever she is taking.

yeah, I agree, it depends if you have an addictive personality or not. I mean apparently Jinny is getting addicted easily, so she could get addicted to these too, even though her body might not be addicted to it, which would be what you other guys said, that some medications aren't addictive, like pills or stuff you get for a flu, you take em and stop when the flu is over, no problem. But she might be addicted to them subconsciously in her mind, e.g. the flu is over but she thinks she feels sick again without the pills. I hope that wasn't too confusing...

Nope, I understood what you were saying. I think that shrink was an a$shole. I mean, if Jinny didnt want to talk, then she didnt have too. IMO you cant really be pushed into these kinds of things, u gotta give it time. I thought Jinny made a good point when she was talking with Mag; when Jinny said how could she talk about what she's feeling to a stranger when she cant even tell her bestfriend; so u cant be pushed.
What did she find out about her brothers murder? I guess I missed this part.

I don't think that's true..I think that the writers are just running out of story lines or something(ex: Ben's leukemia(sp?), Magda's affair w/ Jonah, Jinny getting married and dumpin' him, Kate's stroke)

I think they're running out of unusual cases or whatever and they need something in the character's personal life even more....outragious(sp?)..

Just my 10 cents...

Without knowing for sure what the medication is that the doctor prescribed, let's assume it's one of the new generation of anti-depressents because those are by far the most common.

These new drugs are called Selective Seratonin Reuptake Inhibitors, or SSRI's. Everyones brain produces neurotransmitters to help carry messages from one nerve cell to another. In some people, for reasons not understood, the body doesn't produce enough of them. The SSRIs help keep the body from reabsorbing them as rapidly therefore keeping more of them in your system. The result is a more normal way of thinking and feeling.

These drugs do have an affect on the body but it's more to adjust it closer to normal than anything else.

They are not physically addictive. As far as being phsychologically addictive, the opposite tends to be the problem. A lot of the time people who are on them start to think that they don't need them anymore and quite taking them.

This is not a storyline that was chosen because the writers had nothing left, but rather because it's an important issue that not many people understand. Thank you OriginalFan for your clarification of this disorder. I know what it is, and that i have it, but I cannot describe it. My sister is in AA and takes Zoloft. She went away to the beach this weekend and forgot her pills. She felt fine, but when she got back she was in a really bad mood and reminded me very much of Jinny. The pills don't change you physically and you don't get high off of them. You cannot use them as an escape. You still have to deal with things, but they help you deal more like a person without depression. My oldest sister has depression but refuses to take the medication. She acts worse than Jinny, though she does not drink (yet). Since depression is a genetic disorder, it's not surprising that Jinny has it considering what her mom went through. Suicide is highest among clinically depressed people.

Depression and addictive tendencies run in families. Jinny had both. She is on an antidepressant. ANTIDEPRESSANTS ARE NOT ADDICTIVE!! You cannot even mentally get addicted to an antidepressant because you are not physically aware of the effects.

I still disagree. I think that a person can get addicted to anything. Just my opinion after watching my mom for 7 long years do it. Everything from diet pills, high blood pressure pills (which weren't even prescribed to her) to pain pills. So I don't buy that a person can't get addicted to anything. I have seen it with my own eyes. She also took my Grandma's nerve pills cause she thought they helped her. She misused prescription drugs no matter what they were. She is no longer alive because of all the stress these pills put on her heart, causing two heart attacks. Just my opinion and what I went thru when I was a teenager. I do agree that depression, addictive tendencies and alcholism runs in familes, but I also know that you can choose the path you want to take and you don't have to go down the same path that you watched when you were growing up.

Yes, OriginalFan was very correct about the SSRI's... they are not addictive and you are partially correct about antidepressants... you cannot become physically or psychologically addicted on SSRI's. The older ones... the tricyclic antidepressants do produce withdrawal side-effects if stopped abruptly... (hence the warning on MANY drugs to taper the dose over several weeks...

Tricyclic antidepressants are still used, but not generally the drug of choice... The great thing about the new SSRI's....... THEY ARE VIRTUALLY IMPOSSIBLE TO OVERDOSE ON...poor Jinny if she'd planned to go that way...

Well...I agree that depression, alcoholism, and addictive tendencies run in the family, but depression generally causes the other two. Depression is something that you can't really avoid. Its not something that choosing another path is gonna help because it will still be there. Trust me...I know. I don't even take meds because I'm afraid to get them and addiction is only one reason. I have an addictive personality. I know its almost impossible to get addicted to them, but there's still that small chance. But then again, when I get really depressed it's pretty bad and I think I should get them. Sh*t is just too complicated...

I know that depression does run in families, it runs in mine (I don't know about addiction as much.) But if depression does run in your family then you can't really chose a path you want to go down. More the path is what you chose after you find out about depression if you want help or not. You don't get to chose if you get it or not.

So what I'm saying is that I watch my grandpa and my mom go through it, and the reason I haven't been on the boards that much is that I have been going to a doctor who has told I have depression also, I know what it does to people, I didn't chose to be depressed it was just the chemicals in my brain aren't balanced. I'm not sure if that made sense or not it's early.
