If you were around on July 4, 1976 (the nation's Bicentennial), what do you remember about it? What was it like?

I was there. Well, there were events like "The Tall Ships," something about ships from many nations assembling in NY harbor. I think president Ford, VP Rockefeller, and a lot of dignitaries spoke on a navy ship. It didn't come across as a mammoth event exactly. There was about as much press coverage as for the opening of "The Matrix 2."

I was around. I don't recall much special about any celebrations though. I'm sure there were plenty, but they obviously didn't make much of an impression on me.

I happened to graduate from junior college in 1976 and our grad hat tassle had a Liberty Bell instead of a key as the ornamentation, and we each received a form letter from President Gerald Ford. Whoopee! :lol:

I just remember watching fireworks with my family, watching "Yellow Submarine" on TV that night, and the spring before I wrote a really dumb essay about the Boston Massacre. It was dumb because I was trying to be funny and it came out stupid. I was 13 at the time and I'm still embarrassed by stuff I did back then.

:lol: I guess it didn't stop me!!! I guess my writing gift was still in development at that time. Six months later my English teacher was raving about my gift of writing and expression that was improving day by day. I began to really write better stuff. I think...:p

I was around then, still living in Stamford, CT. It was a great day. Sunny, hot, a friend came over and we sat on my front steps and we played The Bay City Rollers "Saturday Night" on our kazoos. :lol:

Later that day, My parents, brother and I went to Arthur Treachers for dinner and then to Cummings Beach for the fireworks.

I can't recall to much, except we were watching all the celebrations on TV. Here in AZ it was too hot to really do anything outside. So we mainly keep in inside thru out July & August.

I was there! On TV they had what was called" The Bicentennial Minute" which were spots that told of an historical event that took place on that day 200 years ago. It was interesting and they had these "minutes" on for 2 years leading up to the actual Bicentennial.

Of course every community was celebrating the event with parades, fireworks, etc. It was a pretty cool thing! Can't wait for the "tri- centennial"!:lol: patriot:

I had forgotten those. Did they have a lot of different famous people giving them? I seem to recall that they did.

Yup! I forgot! Each "moment" featured a celebrity. Wouldn't it be cool if someone would rerun those spots? I would love to see them again!:D

They could stick them all together and make a marathon history lesson. They were very entertaining, as I recall, and it would be cool to see those people who were famous at the time, and what they looked like so many years ago. They're probably just gathering dust in a vault somewhere - the minutes, not the celebrities.

I don't remember too much about it. I was only four. I just remember a big celebration in our neighborhood and my brothers and I riding our bikes down the street following a parade. I don't really know if it is an actual memory or if I just think I remember it because of my family talking about it. We got our picture in the local paper along with some of our neighbors. My mom still has the clipping.

Nope. But I plan to be around for 2076. I'll be 91.

I was around six or seven at the time, so i don't remember much.
I do remember a lot of red white and blue "Spirit Of 76" logos. Very seventies.

It was beautiful here in NYC. I saw the fireworks from One New York Plaza (One of the tall buildings here in NYC). I remember being on one of the top floors with alot of other people and their families. We were ogling the fireworks from the window. I also remember all the fire hydrants were painted red/white and blue. It was a wonderful time. :)

Yes,I was 8 at the time,but I don't remember that much about it.
