He's just amazing to me, and he is a sweet man, unlike the madmen he usually portrays.
I watched the AFI Lifetime Achievement Award Show a few weeks back. It was a blast. Billy Crystal hosted. It was two hours of clips and celebrities paying tribute to him.
It was a very well-done retrospective of Bobby D's brilliant career.

Answer about Kris Harmon Nelson Tinker:
She was very jealous of the time Rick spent touring and recording. She screamed at him for leaving a guitar on the bed. At least, IMO, she resented his not being home enough to suit her. She spent money like it was going out of style. The accountant would allow her $1000, an she'd spent $10,000.
Kris got into alchohol and drugs (more than Rick). Of course, it took two, and both had affairs, but she dragged the divorce out for four years. He was playing dates 200 days a year just to pay her. Rick's biographers say Kris wanted to hold on to him, so she kept making things worse and worse for him. She'd call him right before a show and make him talk for a long time. He was too nice to shut her up and just walk away. I'm sure too, that if he'd had more back-bone; he'd have stood up to her more, but he hated confrontation with a passion.
This is just what I've heard or read, but it's based on facts in ugly court papers where Kris accused Rick of not wanting his kids, which was totally untrue.

He came across really clearly as a nice guy, and from what you say, apparently he was.
