Just wanted to let you folks know that both Season One and Season Two of The Dick Van Dyke Show will be released together on October 21, 2003 (and as such, Season One will not be released in September as originally announced).

Although we'll have to wait a few more weeks, I am sure that you will be pleased with the superb quality of the DVDs and all of the bonus features included on them. The packaging is absolutely awesome, too, including lenticulars of scenes from the show on the box front (Season One has Rob tripping over the ottoman and Season Two has Laura sliding out of the closet on the pile of walnuts - my personal favorite show).

Don't forget to keep your sense of humor and your thumbs!

I e-mailed Doug today and mentioned to him that this board may be in trouble. I also inquired as to the status of pre-ordering on his web site. His reply:

"sorry to hear that. maybe we can get some board software on our site. let you know - in the meantime, keep checking in. we're getting our 'shopping cart' software up and running so you'all can pre-order once Image starts shipping in september.

see if you can gather as many email addresses of the fans on sitcomsonline as you can and we'll keep everyone informed.

hot enough for you???"

He didn't mention the October release date. I will send him a copy of that post and see what he says. Hang in there, gang!!!

I received this e-mail from TVShowsonDVD.com:

Season 1 date change & more
7/01/2003

According to The Walnut Times, the first season of The Dick Van Dyke Show has been pushed back to October 21. While that may be bad news, the good news is that the second season of the show will be available on the same day.

Thanks to Gary Osborne for the news.

Dick Van Dyke Show, The

There you have it. I e-mailed Doug Denoff with this news. It seems from his e-mail to me yesterday that he is unaware of this development. I will send you his reply when I receive it.

this is great news Dave - on several fronts.

I'm sure everyone is thrilled that more than one season is being produced. and I'm thrilled about the lenticulars because I gave Brownstein and WMA that idea. I showed them samples of lenticulars I had early on in our discussions about the project. Of course all this information was shared with them because at the time we were all on the same team.

I'm glad you're in the loop because WMA and Brownstein are of course keeping me in the dark which, while unfortunate, is to be expected given our dispute.

But the release will be good and it will be available directly from both your and my websites in addition to all the usual retail channels. What's important is that the consumer get a quality product and that the release is a smashing success. Based on the first discs I've seen (the TL series) - the quality and the bonus material and the way it's put together will be great.

And I'm sure that the reunion special will also help the sales of the DVD's.

Happy 4th to everyone.

In addition to the above reply, Doug e-mailed and said that we can now pre-order from his site. It goes through Amazon, but I don't care! I'm going over and order right now!!! Thanks, Doug Denoff! Lolac

I did it!! I pre-ordered season one through Doug's site! I feel like there is a light at the end of this long tunnel. I am so excited about season 2, also! This is so much more than I dared hope for! Thank you, Doug! Lolac

you're welcome!

one little note: if you order now thru amazon, we make 10%. (you can always cancel) if you wait and order thru our own shopping cart, we'll make more (goes to the legal fund)

I guess what I'm saying is that there will be plenty of product so there's no panic to pre-order.

I'll order however it's gonna help you the most, Doug. So if I need to wait a bit longer for the shopping cart, I will. Just keep us informed. I'm quite sure Lolac feels the same way.

I realize you are being left out of the loop, but I am curious as to why they chose to release two seasons at once. Don't get me wrong, I'm tickled pink about that. But I'm just curious as to what made them decide that way. Any thoughts?

Well, why didn't you say so in the first place!? ;) Get your shopping cart up and I'll cancel the Amazon order and place my order through you! No matter, we truly appreciate all you've done! Lolac

the way amazon does preorders, you'll get an email when they have product to ship. so if you don't actually go ahead and order, the preorder does nothing.

it DOES give us statistics on how much interest there is, so perhaps I'll change my mind and say - WHAT THE HECK - PREORDER LIKE CRAZY!!!

you're all the best!

and be careful what you say about brownstein (or anyone else for that matter) here. facts are facts but don't make any derrogatory statements about anyone in a public forum.

just realized something else which may be in the background of the changes in Image's plans.

The original goal of my project was to release on October 20, 2001 - the 40th anniversary of the first airdate. October 20 is the anniversary day. perhaps in keeping with my original plans, Image et. al. are planning some sort of 42nd anniversary blitz. not as exciting as a round number like 40, 45 or 50. but who knows?

just speculation.

You may be right on that one, Doug. I probably didn't give them enough credit to think of something like that, but I guess anything is possible.

A bit expensive for now. They seem out of line with what we're typically seeing for half-hour comedies. Closing in on the $2 per episode mark.

For reference, M*A*S*H Season 4 is coming out next week for $30 for 24 episodes ($1.25 per episode).

I hope that doesn't prevent them from releasing all the episodes and creating a full set at a price more in the $1.25-$1.40 range per episode.

After being burned on Mary Tyler Moore, I'm waiting 'till everything is available regardless. Not that I don't appreciate what Doug is trying to do, but that's what it'll take for my support.

To be fair, the dvd market right now is notoriously unbalanced in pricing. While you cite a set like M*A*S*H coming in a good price per episode, consider a set like "King of the Hill", where the half hour episodes come in at nearly $3 per episode (if you use retail prices - not discounted prices like Amazon.com).

Or take "I Love Lucy", where 4 volume sets come in at around $3.00 per episode. Or "The Abbott & Costello Show", where 4 episode dvd's come in at almost $5.00 per episode! Granted, these aren't season sets, so the price is a bit more, but nevertheless my point stands - the market has a wide price range right now.

Overall, I don't mind paying up to $2.00 per episode, even though I (like everyone else) would prefer a less expensive set. But I don't think that's outrageous by any means.

B&W "I'll be getting the first 2 Season sets the minute they go up for pre-order at Doug's. If you want all 5 seasons, it's important to show Calvada that these will sell - so let's get the word out and support these first 2 sets!!" fan

Amen, B&WFan. I cancelled my Amazon pre-order (even though it was through Doug's site) and I will order from his site directly. I think it is important that we show support so we can get all 5 seasons.

The original goal of my project was to release on October 20, 2001 - the 40th anniversary of the first airdate.
Just was going through some old threads, and noticed this thread, which was started on July 1, 2003 -- exactly one year ago. Which was the date when we learned that the first 2 DVD-On-DVD sets were coming on October 21, 2003.

In less that one full calendar year, all 158 eps. of the best sitcom in history (TDVDS, naturally :)) have been released on a home-video format -- and in crystal quality to boot. :)

Hard to beat that!

BTW -- Doug, sorry to be nit-picky...but Oct. 20, 1961 was not the date of the first DvDS broadcast. "The Sick Boy And The Sitter" aired on October 3rd, 1961.

Perhaps your "20th" was as a result of confusing the Air Date for the episode with the Film Date -- which was on the 20th. Of January, that is. :)

At any rate -- I want to say thank you to Doug Denoff and David Van Deusen, both of whom I've e-mailed in the past and who have been very kind to me by return e-mail. And both of whom I know were very much involved in the process that finally got these excellent DVD boxed sets on the market.

Your efforts are sincerely appreciated by this Dick Van Dyke Show fan. These DVD-On-DVD sets are truly the ULTIMATE TV-on-DVD product out there today. (Plus the very nice "Best Of" volumes, which DO have some extra bonus features on them as well, which is a nice surprise for those buyers who don't want to dive into the complete full-season compilations.)

Thanks you guys!
Great job!

:) :) :)
