I was thinking about Lowell leaving the show this weekend and had an idea. The writers tried to replace Lowell, unsuccessfully I might add, with Bud. Basically you want to replace a main character with someone completely different. In Lowell's case that would be hard because his character was so diverse. He was stupid, yet very intelligent at the same time. He dabbled in arts and so forth.
So here's my idea. Why not replace Lowell with a female mechanic? She doesn't have to be a butch or anything, heck look at Alex. She was gorgeous and knew her way around an Apache helicopter. Adding a female mechanic, they could have introduced a possible romance for love-starved Antonio.
Ah well, just an idea.

I like that idea, and IMO there aren't enough women mechanics on tv :)

My idea for Lowell's replacement is an older guy who is strong physically but seemingly dim. Sort of like Coach replacing Woody. This would also make it possible to have a romantic storyline between this guy and Fay.

Yeah - a female mechanic. I always did think Antonio needed a girl. But I'm sorry - she'd need to be normal-looking. Not all gorgeous like Helen, Alex & Casey. In fact, she oughta look a little bit homely in her coveralls with no makeup.... but look really nice when she gets cleaned up.

For some reason I picture Caroline Rhea as the unkept mechanic. Not sure I'd like that for the series...that's just what I see.

Some people might think that we're all nuts here, trying to create a replacement character for Lowell Mather....YEARS after the "Wings" series has ended (but it IS fun to do)!
A not-too-bright old man, an ornery old man, a sexy woman, a "Plain Jane" woman....ALL of these types of mechanics would have been very interesting replacements for Lowell, and could have added new possibilites to the series....
However, one thing keeps sticking in my mind....the fact that the producers and writers DIDN'T create a new, interesting character, but rather a half-hearted rehash of Lowell, makes it quite obvious that the "Wings" powers-that-be were merely coasting towards the end of the series....just like on "M*A*S*H" when they didn't bother to find a good replacement for the departed Radar...they just stuck Klinger in there with an "Aw, that's good enough" attitude.

See I liked Klinger as a replacement for Radar but the airport on Wings not having a mechanic is just weird. In later episodes after Bud vanished, did they ever show an extra working on the plane or at least Joe and Brian performing routine maintenance?
And you're right, it IS fun coming up with replacements, even though the show has been over for years.

I like the idea of a female mechanic replacing Lowell. Antonio needed a romantic partner. I hated the way they made him the last two years. He deserved some happiness, either with Casey or a new main female.
