View Full Version : The Return Of Sandy....A Real "What Were They Thinking?" Episode
pilotguy 06-28-2003, 05:44 PM I finally got around to watching my taped episode of "Wings" where Sandy returns to the island after she finds out that Joe and Helen are engaged.
This was one of the WORST "Wings" episodes that I have ever seen...not because it wasn't funny (it was in spots), but because Sandy's "wedding ceremony" was virtually a rehash of her earlier "Prom Night".
At least when other characters like Carlton Blanchard and nephew Lewis returned to the series, there were new story twists to their latest appearances. The basic "schtick" may have been similar (Carlton asking annoying questions, Lewis hitting on gorgeous women, etc.), but the episode plots were different....This second "Sandy" episode copied her first appearance TOO closely!
You would think that the "Wings" writers would have been able to put a different twist on Sandy's second visit, but it was the "Prom Night" episode all over again...and not NEARLY as funny the second time around!
I don't mean to sound negative, and you all know that I love to praise the GOOD "Wings" episodes, but THIS one missed the mark BIG time!
Ice Cream Man 06-28-2003, 07:53 PM So what are you saying - it wasn't very clear in your post. You know, you've got a real problem mincing words. :)
spunkygirl 06-28-2003, 08:25 PM I disagree! A person like Sandy who is so wacko would have no originality. She's stuck on prom night. Thats what it's all about for her, that Joe didn't take her to the prom. Her fantasy wedding would be like the prom for her IMO. I thought that episode was hilarious and nothing like the prom episode. It shows that Sandy had no originality.
losthighway 06-28-2003, 08:40 PM Really Pilotguy, don't sugar coat it, tell us what you really think! I pretty much agree with Topanga though, because this was a psychotic character that was doomed to repeat her actions.....and I liked how each episode ended and she would always wisper to Joe "Next year Joe Junior"....or whatever, so the audience knew this was far from being over. Plus the actress who played Sandy did an outstanding job in my opinion....but it' still one of those things that some like it and some don't...Carlton lost his charm very quickly for me, whereas with others Sandy wore on them.
You'll be happy to know that Sandy only showed up one more time (and yes I liked that episode too) but they ran it during the marathon, so maybe they won't run it again any time soon.
spunkygirl 06-28-2003, 08:44 PM Personally for me, the Carlton episodes got old fast. They ran out of steam for me. They just seemed to be about the same things every time we saw him, and his questions got on my nerves fast. :(
pilotguy 06-28-2003, 09:00 PM Maybe Sandy's "Wedding" fell flat for me because I KNEW that she was a whacko going into the episode....
She really had me fooled in the "Prom" episode....she acted so normal at first that the whole "Prom In The Basement" setup, along with her LOONY acting, came as a complete surprise to me.
However, when she acted normal for the gang at the start of the "Wedding" episode, I KNEW that it was all an act, and that she WOULD try to trap Joe in some sort of sick "event"....
So maybe it IS all just me....Maybe I SHOULD tear down that airport set that I have constructed in my basement (complete with Sandpiper service desk and Helen's lunch counter)....after all, I'll probably NEVER be able to actually get any of the cast members down there anyway!
phoebe7165 06-28-2003, 09:40 PM Gee, Pilotguy, I thought I was bad with my full-size cardboard cutouts of Joe & Brian. I take turns taking each one of them to bed with me on alternate nights. Don't have the nerve to take both of them to bed at the same time yet! I've never been with 2 brothers before!  I've even been thinking about putting a picture of Tim Daly's face on the face of my boyfriend's photo! And if any of you believe any of this,ah, I think I will have no comment.   Yes, as cuckoo as Sandy Cooper!
I mean me, not all of you!!!
wingshock 06-28-2003, 09:45 PM I guess I'm so-so on the Sandy eps. The only thing I didn't really get about that ep with the wedding ceremony was how she had the time to set up the whole thing and take it all down without Helen knowing. The prom night was in her parent's basement... so that made sense. But the wedding thing (with a real big cake) was in Helen's living room... how did she pull that off?
Love,
Wing<><
Ice Cream Man 07-01-2003, 01:41 PM On the Carlton episodes, I think Gilbert Gottfried took over the role of the annoying antagonist very well. That last episode where he was selling off Carlton's things was great and it was full of great acting. I especially love how Casey interacts with him.
Chocoholic 07-17-2003, 12:37 AM I loved Sandy Cooper the first time, but I thought the 2nd and 3rd times were just redundant. I didn't like those two Sandy Cooper episodes at all.
