View Full Version : Why..... Lucylover22 06-27-2003, 05:58 PM do some people not like Fred? In my opinion, Bill Frawley wasn't always funny, but he had great one liners, especially in Ethels Hometown! dawsongirl 06-27-2003, 06:14 PM Because some people don't like crotchety old characters. They like a smiling face. Mickey 06-27-2003, 07:59 PM I like Fred! He makes me laugh. He has a great delivery of lines, and I like the fact that he almost always seems to be miserable and/or cranky! I also like the way that he and Ethel put each other down all the time. I love his scenes with Ricky, too. Basically William Frawley was a terrific professional (drinking aside) who had years of experience in showbusiness, which showed in every scene he did. There's no substitute for that kind of professionalism, and you don't tend to see it these days. Fred's not my favourite character, but I that doesn't mean to say that I don't appreciate him. I think the show was the better for having him around. BabalooBabe 07-12-2003, 06:15 PM Originally posted by dawsongirl Because some people don't like crotchety old characters. SPLAIN 07-15-2003, 01:57 PM But the grumpy old man became a fixture on comedy shows BECAUSE of his great portrayal. ricardo/mertz 07-16-2003, 10:57 AM Oh for cornsake! The show wouldn't have been the same w/o him. Lucy's the nutcase (I mean that lovingly) Ethel's the reluctant accomplice Desi's the levelhead of the bunch Then there's Fred the grouchy old man. Pretty much cornered all of the emotions:crazy: SPLAIN 07-16-2003, 11:14 AM Levelheaded? With a temper like that? ricardo/mertz 07-16-2003, 11:21 AM What I meant by level headed was, he had the brains. And Fred had the know how. ha ha! Mickey 07-16-2003, 11:42 AM Levelheaded? With a temper like that? What's wrong with Ricky's temper? He'd fit in well in my family... He's supposed to be the 'normal' one though, isn't he. The one who isn't zany or manic and grumpy. (And, naturally, he's also the funniest one. Sorry Splain ;) ) SPLAIN 07-16-2003, 01:11 PM I know what you mean, every time us fans get together, we always talk about all the famous funny routines he did over the years, and also, to a lesser extent the great songs Lucy performed with her band, LOL! The Modfather 07-31-2003, 05:36 PM Fred is like one of my fav people. But one thing I like all the jokes but they are funny but I didn't find Ethel all that fat! But what ever! Hes so funny!;) Just Popped In 08-01-2003, 01:37 AM Fred is fine with me; anyway I find it difficult to dislike any of the ILL characters. SPLAIN 08-01-2003, 10:13 AM True, they were all perfect in their own way and the show would have suffered greatly if any of them had been removed! Even good ole Fred! AmericanAngel 08-02-2003, 02:07 PM ive got to favorite quotes with fred they are 1- Ricky: Listen Fred i got an aweful problem on my hands Fred: you should of thought of that before you married her 2- lucy: Gee, did you here that hunny?
