I was just wondering do seasons that finished below 30, do they still get released on DVD? So far the


Jeffersons season 1 and 2 have been released and both were in top 30

Good Times season 1 was released and finished in top 30

Sanford and Son season 1 and 2 was released and finished in top 20

All in The Family was released on DVD and finished number one


So are there any seasons from a sitcom that was under 30 that was STILL released on DVD?

Cheers was last in the ratings in its first season and it was still released on DVD. Family Guy and Futurama were both released on DVD and I don't think they were in the top 30 either. The ratings a show once got really doesn't impact if it will be released on DVD or not.

How come the ratings don't impact a season being released on DVD?

Sports Night got released. That show couldn't even see the top 30...at least I don't think so.

Season One would be a logical starting point for any show no matter the ratings. Especially with Cheers, since the groundwork is laid for the Sam/Diane thing. All in the Family wasn't in the top 30 it's first season, yet it's first season still got released.

As for Sports Night, it has it's fans like any other show.

I think that as long as the show has been big in syndication, it will at one point come to DVD. Some shows that made the top 10 may never be released or will be released later than others because they've never done that well in syndication.

Well I guess Barney Miller, and Soap were horrible in synfication.

On the contrary, I think both "Soap" and "Barney Miller" have done well in syndication. If the former is doing badly on TVLand, it is because the channel's airing of only certain episodes over and over. With a serial comedy such as "Soap," you cannot air only the same select few repeatedly. "Barney Miller" has always been a popular show, even spawning the obligatory pop icon status board game.

I think what denotes a show to be released on dvd or not is the popularity of the show, not the ratings. If one were to take ratings into account, then the original "Star Trek" should not have been released, having done poorly in the ratings during its original run. But as we all know, the popularity and love that the fans feel for that show, myself included, have allowed it to rise into the stratosphere of popularity and the inevitable dvd release.

What gets released to DVD is determined by current public interest. If TPTB think it will generate $$
There are different web sites that take in votes such as

& report them to the big wigs
I don't think its a specific # of votes but the overall impression that the companies get of weather or not the show will sell.

I think they take all things into concideration including ratings of syndication & sales of promo items & such.

Mad About You got released to DVD after a few of us fans went on a campaign posting every where telling people to vote for its release. Not sure if it had anything to do with it but it wasn't too long after the votes started racking up that an announcment was made for its release. I think it took about 6 - 8 mo before an official date was mentioned for the 1st season.

Since this is a topic about dvd releases, I'll post this here. What if a show has been on two different networks? Can they go ahead and release all seasons, even if it's been on two different networks, or could that block a release for the seasons it changed to a new network? j/w

For Soap fans who don't know, Soap is supposedly going to be released on DVD this year. It was one of the Sony poll winners, along with NewsRadio, Dilbert, and the live-action version of The Tick. So Soap might be on DVD sometime before January. The fact that Dilbert and The Tick are being released definitely says a show doesn't have to be popular with a huge audience to get released on DVD.

I wouldn't think that being on two different networks would matter. It's all about who owns the rights to the show.

For example... Buffy The Vampire Slayer is a 20th Century Fox show, no matter if it was on the WB and UPN. Fox can release whatever they want to of the series since they own it. Doesn't matter who aired it first.

And Star Trek TNG and DS9 didn't have networks... they were in syndication. Paramount owns the Trek Franchise, so we get the wonderful 7 disc box sets every other month!

The 1st season of "Strangers with Candy" was released and there were only 10 episodes that season.
