I was thinking about how many of Archie's close friends harbor secrets about themselves. Don't ask me why I was thinking about that, I guess it was a slow mental day or something.

Steve- that he is gay
Eddie Frazier-that he and his son don't get along and despite success he is unhappy.
Stretch-that he is Jewish

I am sure there are other examples but those are the ones that come to mind.

I guess they were embarassed, or knew that Archie would be very opinionated about it.

I didn't know Stretch was Jewish! I've never seen that episode. What season is it?

Season 7. I think this was the ep that talked about Stretch being Jewish. I don't think they ever mentioned it before.

153. Stretch Cunningham, Goodbye
gs: Charles Siebert () Jay Gerber ()

Archie gets the news that his friend, comic Stretch Cunningham, has died. He's asked to give the eulogy for Stretch, but declines after learning the funnyman was Jewish. Archie eventually relents and gives an emotional sermon about how important it is to laugh.

b: 29-Jan-1977 w: Phil Doran and Douglas Arango and Milt Josefsberg d: Paul Bogart

Yep, I'd say it was the first time it was mentioned about him being Jewish.

I found out new things about this show all the time. Why in the world was the character Strecth Killed?

Probably because he really didn't contribute too much to the show. And also to create an atmosphere for Archie to give that speech.

Thanks for the info, BTW.

Offhand I'd say that after 6+ years of cranking out stories, it was time for the writers to plumb new depths for fresh material.
