"Reservations for Eight" (from Season 2)
"Big Hass and Little Falsie" (from Season 3)

Starring Dixie Carter, Delta Burke, Annie Potts, Jean Smart, & Meshach Taylor as Anthony Bouvier, this taste of the south has a street date of September 2nd, with a list price of $19.95. It will be in the original full-screen presentation, with a running time of 119 minutes. Language and subtitle selection (besides English, of course) aren't finalized yet, but we do know that this release will be closed captioned for the hearing impaired. The only extras mentioned were a "Play All" feature, and bonus trailers (informing you about other DVDs and films from Columbia).
ClassicTV4Ever 06-23-2003, 12:15 PM I'm kinda disappointed. I really thought it was going to be the entire first season, oh well. I think I'm gonna hold off buying this DVD because I don't think season sets are out of the question. Married...With Children had 2 "Best Of" DVD's and now season sets are in the works :)
Rhiannon 06-23-2003, 04:57 PM well I guess The Best Of with 5 episodes is better than None Of with 0.
ConservativeBalla 06-25-2003, 01:56 PM It's pretty cool, I guess. I might get it, but like "ClassicTV4Ever", I was looking forward to an actual season. If it's turns out to really be only 20 bucks, I probably will get it.

ClassicTV4Ever 07-28-2003, 06:22 PM I like the updated cover art much much better :) The first one looked kinda dull.
Rhiannon 08-05-2003, 07:24 PM Less than a month! Are there any extras on the dvd?
and what is Dixie doing on the cover??

Best be careful about not buying any 'best-of' sets. Most of the time, especially with older series like this one, companies that own them are hesitant about investing in DVD releases of their series for fear that they won't sell. So to be safe, they issue out a 'best-of' series to see if there's interest in the show. If die-hard fans hold out for season sets, then that means sales will be dismally low. The only message the companies are going to get from low sales is that no one is interested in the series. Then months or years later, the die-hards who refused to buy the initial 'best-of' release will break down and eventually buy it when the realization that no new releases are forthcoming.
Most fans who like these shows are not the type to spend mucho bucks on DVDs period. Some don't even own a DVD player. I speak of middle-aged women and men who are not as caught up in pop culture and therefore don't acribe to the trend of the day. It's different with a show like FRIENDS, since that show is still current. There are tons of teenagers who are into that show and, either through their own allowance or through their parents, will invest in DVD sets as well as other merchandise. It's also a show that's mainstream. DESIGNING WOMEN is not. Most of the show's fanbase are women who are much older than the teen crowd. Like it or not that's a reality.
Me, I'm 30 and am male. I have bought the 'best-of' release and would invest in season sets, and I'm sure I'm not the only one on this board who fits that description, but face it, we're the exception, not the rule.
THE MARY TYLER MOORE SHOW is just as popular and has just as loyal a fanbase, but future releases of the show have been halted because Season 1 didn't sell well. And there was a MARY & RHODA reunion that was broadcast that topped the ratings, but the show's fanbase is not part of the DVD buying crowd. Naturally, I hope the same fate doesn't befall DESIGNING WOMEN, but it might not even get that far if sales are crappy for this release. Think about it...
