It's strange and annoying,but it's probably to take up less space,on the boards. :)

So I'm guessing no more attaching pictures from the boards to signatures? Well it was nice while it lasted.

I'm guessing it's suppose to allow threads with attachments to load faster for people with slower internet connections and to save board space.

I am only testing things out, if you are wondering why the boards were down earlier it was because the server was overloaded. Ask yourself, would you rather have attachments disabled entirely? All the signatures and avatars puts stress on the server and will cause it to crash from time to time.

I am looking for ways to reduce the server load and can only accomplish this by trial and error.

I think you still should be able to, there's just a different way to do it now. :)

You can still use attachments as signature pics, just use the url as you normally would.
