Dear Readers: Today is Father's Day. The origins of the national observance are credited to Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Wash. Mrs. Dodd wanted a way to honor her father, William (Henry) Jackson Smart, a Civil War veteran who raised his six children after their mother died. In 1909, Mrs. Dodd asked her minister to have a special service dedicated to fathers in June, near the date of her father's birthday. The idea caught on, and in 1924, President Calvin Coolidge made Father's Day a national event. In 1972, President Richard Nixon established a permanent national observance on the third Sunday in June.

Mrs. Dodd also advocated the idea of wearing red roses for those who have living fathers, and white roses for those whose fathers are deceased. In 1924, a Pennsylvanian Bible class selected the dandelion instead, saying, "the more it is trampled on, the more it grows."

Here's one of our favorite poems for fathers. We don't know of an author, but we know the piece appeared in The Danbury, Conn., News-Times many years ago. Here it is:

Father

4 years old: My daddy can do anything.

7 years old: My dad knows a lot, a whole lot.

8 years old: My father doesn't know quite everything.

12 years old: Oh, well, naturally, Father doesn't know that, either.

14 years old: Father? Hopelessly old-fashioned.

21 years old: Oh, that man is out-of-date. What did you expect?

25 years old: He knows a little bit about it, but not much.

30 years old: Maybe we ought to find out what Dad thinks.

35 years old: A little patience. Let's get Dad's assessment before we do anything.

50 years old: I wonder what Dad would have thought about that. He was pretty smart.

60 years old: My dad knew absolutely everything!

65 years old: I'd give anything if Dad were here so I could talk this over with him. I really miss that man.

That is such a good poem. I'm getting weepy eyed just reading it.

Well, I gave my dad his card today and he actually read it. It must've been touching because he started to cry. :shrugs: I was hoping that card would hit something in his brain and tell him to stop being such an a$$, but the card was very touching so maybe it will work cause it made him cry. I guess he remember all the horrible times we've had together. :shrugs:
