I think you just answered your own question. In my opinion, I feel that the reason George proved to be so popular was based on the fact that his character was something that we had not seen before. What I mean is after being introduced to the first tv "white" bigot, we were given the other side of the coin with George as tv's first "black" prejudiced person. Also, Sherman's portrayal was memorable, further adding to his popularity.

I think George was much funnier on AITF. Once the Jeffersons started, he became less funny as the seasons went on.
