View Full Version : Do you volunteer?
TheHappyBurgerMeister 06-13-2003, 12:55 AM It can be a very rewarding and fun thing if it's something you really enjoy! So, who volunteers? I volunteer one day a week at the local humane society playing and socializing with the kitties. I love it! I also just got done volunteering in a kindergarten class room.
I volunteered in grade 9 and 10 at an old folk's home and visited with the old ladies and helped getting juice and food prepared for their activities. It was okay. There was one lady who was very annoying and sang the one two buckle my shoe song over and over until I thought I would go crazy.
Montana Ponine 06-13-2003, 11:34 AM The only time I've ever volunteered was last year when I helped out at my old elementary school's library. It was okay.
*PinkLady* 06-13-2003, 12:39 PM I volunteered at an animal shelter last summer because it was a requirement for NHS. The animals were cute and all, but the job stunk...literally.
¤I Love Clay Aiken¤ 06-13-2003, 01:08 PM I used to be a part of the SOS (Students of Service) group @ school. It got boring- we spent more time in the class discussing what we could do than actually doing anything. I went for like, 4 weeks.
I wouldnt mind working with animals at a shelter, but yeah they put them to sleep from time to time and I couldnt handle that.
::~Sweet Carolyn~:: 06-13-2003, 03:26 PM I used to volunteer at the hospital. They put with me on the gynecology (sp) floor without telling me and half the people walked around naked. That was an interesting experience.
animalcrackers 06-13-2003, 06:12 PM The past few years I volunteered at a food mission, it was kind of fun and this year I volunteered at our local library for an 'Teddy Bear Picnic' for the kids. I would love to do some volunteering involving animals.
Titania 06-13-2003, 06:37 PM i volunteer at the local historical society- 3 mornings a week all summer, events throughout the year. i work in the library, the archives, give tours, and interpret at events
i also have been a volunteer interpreter at a historic gristmill and art school.
i gift wrapped for Home of the Sparrow (women's shelter) during the holidays
i've also done work w/ Angel Tree which has been really rewarding. I ran a table at the mall and gift-wrapped labeled gifts (its an organization that sends christmas presents to children of prisoners and they are delivered on christmas morning and labeled from the parent)
i volunteered at and spoke at the Relay for Life for the American Cancer Society
and this summer im giving flute lessons.
Evita Peron 06-13-2003, 07:01 PM I tried to volunteer at my local library before. I filled out the paper work but they never called me. Which made me mad.
I volunteered before at an elementary school for a day for a kindergarten class. I ended up getting sick after wards.

I also volunteered at an old folk's home for one day a few summers ago. My friend invited me to come for a "Fun Friday" day. Well, they all got together in the eating area and for a "snack" they had sour kraut and something else! I could barely stand the smell! Sour kraut is disgusting. I guess people that age really enjoy that for a snack. Some of the old people were a little difficult too. Most of them can't even hear a thing. I'd rather work with little kids and animals.
The nice thing about volunteering with the cats at the humane society is I don't have to do any dirty work. They have paid workers doing that!:) Also the shelter is a no-kill one which is good to know.
Georgia's on my Mind 06-14-2003, 12:31 AM lets see
i havent recently, but later this summer im volunteering at a hospital..
i vollunteered there two years ago
and for confirmation class i did walks for prolife causes, collected can goods, worked at a christmas party at a soup kitchen, worked at bazzar's for the church, helped clean the church a few times...and decorate it during the easter/christmas seasons...and i think thats about it...
anndd next year im doing community service for my school...at a soup kitchen i think?
webuster 06-14-2003, 08:10 AM There's nothing in my town to volunteer with (even if there was, everything you join in the town- that YOU enjoy, Drama or something, is ful of ppl who just join for nothing, get in your way, and the person shouting loudest wins) and I can't go anywhere nearby. Youd need to be over 16 and a cetain weight (an age, and a weight that i'm under!) to donate blood. I'd really like to work at a dogs home, rspca or something.
Brandon 06-14-2003, 08:23 AM nope. i'll probably never volunteer...the most i'll do is community service for breaking the law...
InspectorExstead 06-14-2003, 09:49 PM I've been volunteering at the hospital for a year. I'm in ER right now (but it's not a trauma er, so it's pretty boring). I'm going to work somewhere new for the summer, I don't know where though, hopefully the maternity ward if they have space.

May I say on behalf of humanity that we're grateful for your efforts!
