View Full Version : Canadian Idol

In an inevitable attempt to cash in on the huge success of "American Idol", the CTV network, which airs the show in Canada, has launched an all-Canadian version called "Canadian Idol" and if initial reaction can be believed, then they could have a goldmine on their hands. Once the announcement was made to launch the show, thousands of Canadians lined up for hours on end to attend auditions in Vancouver, Calgary, Winnipeg, Montreal, Ottawa, St. John's, and Toronto, which is where the show will take place and where the largest turnouts occurred. Of course, the idea is to prove that Canadians can be just as talented---and unfortunately, also just as off-key---as their American neighbours. In a further attempt to emphasize the homegrown nature of the show, it will be hosted by Ben Mulroney, who is the son of our former Prime Minister Brian Mulroney. The premiere was last Monday, and from all indications it did very well in the ratings, despite the fact that it was up against Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals, which I watched instead. For those of you who saw it, or want to see it, what do you think? Was this a good idea and is there another Kelly Clarkson---or better yet, another Avril Lavigne---out there? I'd love to know!

Actually "American Idol" cashed in on the British's idea. British's "Pop Idol" was around before our "American Idol".

Besides the "Krappy" Kaleb fiasco, overall CI2 was better than AI3.

I watched it online occasionally. I LOVED Theresa, but Kalan was like Canada's JPL. Only he was a maaaaaaaaad good singer. Not saying JPL was bad, just that there were better people than him :p

I liked Anna Cyzon best though. She only made top 32 :(

Odd that I'm such a HUGE American Idol fan and have tried for two years in a row to get into Canadian Idol. I usually watch until they narrow it down to the finalists. I did participate last year though because I liked Kalan from the beginning - he had the voice, look and personality.

I was totally embarrassed by the first one though when Malcolm won - he had the personality of a speedbump.

Meanwhile, they film in Toronto - I could actually attend the performances but don't bother (I have nobody that'll go with me). Besides, Ben Mulroney just bugs me too much (the hatred for his father runs family-wide) and the judges try to be too much like Simon, Randy and Paula.

Oh well - I'll probably give it a go since there sure isn't much else on these days - at least until Big Brother starts.

I've got to get caught up on it! I haven't watched ANY of it this season (and missed the best part - the auditions). :(

I just cringe at the thought of putting up with Ben Mulroney again!!! They couldn't find the Canadian equivalent to Ryan Seacrest out of 30 million people - pathetic!

Ryan Seacrest isn't fit to carry Ben Mulroney's jock strap.
