Interesting question...When "Roseanne" first started, Darlene was a tomboyish smart mouth that was sometimes two steps away from failing classes in school, and often getting ino trouble at school for silly pranks (like making animal noises in class). One day, literally, she became withdrawn, wearing black, hanging out in her room all day, much to the surprise of her parents. When she dated David, I wouldn't say he was a bad influence on her, they just had a lot in common--they hated uppity idividuals, were into Gothic literature and illustrating gory comics. In later years, Darlene pretty much had a one-liner for everything and was sarcastic about most anything.

Ive noticed Darlene's change. She starts off a stupid tom-boy/trouble maker in seasons 1-2. Then in season 3, she starts being a lot more cynical and sarcastic. In season 4, she started her depressed stage, which sort of ends by season 5. Then she starts dating David(one of the most annoying characters) and she stops being depressed and just becomes an annoying sarcastic smart-ass. Also starting with season 4 or 5, she is much smarter than she has ever been. She wants to write and go to a college. I remember an episode in season 2 where she didnt even know how to spell.

I think the writers wrote more for Sara Gilbert in year five because Lecy Goranson had been transitioned out of the show. A lot of people coined her as annoying by season seven (I will admit that the way she dumped David was really mean and cruel), but I think she also provided much comic relief in the last season episodes that she was in. I even think that she was much like Roseanne in many was.

I agree thta she was like Roseanne in a lot of ways. I enjoy Darlene the most because she is sarcastic! I like her one-liners and the earlier episodes of her and the original Becky are hillarious! I especially like the one where they break their curfew and Roseanne and Dan decide to teach them a lesson. Great stuff!
