I have read both that the police have used psychics to help solve crimes and that there is not one police agency that has ever used one. Does anyone have any information on this or know of a police department that has used psychic abilities?

Here's a site about a psychic named Rennie Wiley set up an agency The Dragon's Lair and used it to form a network of psychics and retired police officers who could combine their talents and offer assistance to the local police. They specialized in finding stolen property.

More interesting is Ken Charles, a British police officer who used his psychic abilities on the job. He would use his intuition, he said, to figure out how to make the offender slip up and leave clues that could be used in court. He wrote about this in his autobiography, Psychic Cop.

Thanks for the site, Jem, that was really neat reading! It was especially interesting because the psychic they mention, Noreen Renier, was mentioned in a book I just finished reading. The book is called Who Killed My Daughter? by author Lois Duncan, a true story about the murder of her daughter and the psychics she used to try to find the killer. Lois Duncan is normally a juvenile story writer, but this book was really interesting to read.

I had read in the book my psychology class uses that not one agency had ever used a psychic, I guess you can't even trust the college books! The author of this book was obviously a skeptic and discounted all things paranormal. Well, the author can't be all that bad, he also discounted almost all of Sigmund Freud, also, lol.

Has anyone had any contact with a psychic themselves?

I just happened to see this thread and realized that I have some relevant information.

Several years ago I met and became friends with a psychic, a remarkable guy who was an expert astrologer and also had been a private detective. He told me that he had worked with several police departments and was retained by one in particular for several years, to help with locating missing persons. He said that the conditions were that the police would publicly disavow any connection with him, and he likewise was supposed to keep their association confidential. He believed that it was very common for police departments to use psychics, but that it was rare for them to admit it. He also said that some of the cops were afraid of him, probably because they thought he could "read minds" and they had something to hide!
