View Full Version : New GROWING PAINS Movie!
trekkie 06-07-2003, 12:08 AM Saw this on iwon.com today:
TVGO: Speaking of cuties, what's your TV son Kirk Cameron up to? We miss him.
Thicke: Kirk has about five children to raise; that's why you haven't heard from him. We're doing our second Growing Pains reunion movie, in fact, probably to air during fall sweeps. It looks like everybody [in the cast] will be back and included. It's the continuing story of the Seaver family. Where are they now?
ultimatetvfan 06-10-2003, 11:42 PM how did you find this out? That's cool. Another reuinion.
IamGGFan 06-11-2003, 01:01 AM That's interesting. What about the first one when was it and what channel aired it? I missed it.
90210 Dude 06-11-2003, 02:47 AM I wonder if Leonardo and Brad Pitt will make an appearance!
Well, its not like any of them have better stuff goin on, I kinda hope its just a documentary and not a new movie IMHO:talk: :) Though, I prolly end up watchin anyways! lol.;)
becky1985 06-13-2003, 11:24 AM unforunately, it won't air in germany, will it? :(
growingpains 11-17-2003, 04:45 PM i already knew about the 2nd movie, i saw it on tvguide.com. alan said it will air fall sweeps, and the orignal cast hopefully will be coming back!!
jadedgumshoe 11-17-2003, 06:37 PM does anyone know the exact date?
Pavan 01-22-2004, 09:51 AM It is now slated for May 2004:
Show me that smile -- again.
ABC has greenlit another reunion movie featuring the cast of the late '80s comedy hit "Growing Pains." Telepic has been put on the fast track: Shooting begins next month for a May sweeps airdate.
The first "Growing Pains" reunion pic did boffo for ABC in November 2000, but it took three years and several scripts to figure out the sequel.
Alphabet web execs ultimately went with a script by writers Christina Lynch and Loren Segan ("Noah's Ark"); Mark Bacino and Jim Green, who were behind the first movie, are back to exec produce in association with Warner Bros. TV.
Movie finds the Seaver kids (Kirk Cameron, Tracey Gold, Jeremy Miller, Ashley Johnson) up in arms after their parents (Alan Thicke, Joanna Kerns) decide to sell the family house.
"It took us a while; we went through a few different versions of the story," said ABC movies and minis chief Quinn Taylor. "These writers, who I adore, really made it contemporary but stuck to the bones of the show."
Kerns, who has had a successful second career directing telepics and episodic television, will helm the project.
"When we came to ABC, we told them that we wanted Joanna to direct and they said, 'absolutely,' " Bacino said. "Then we went to Joanna, and she said it would be a fun idea."
Taylor called the quick assembly of the project a "miracle."
"The greenlight was a little sudden, and with this cast -- everyone has lives and careers -- to get them all back and, in this case very quickly, was not easy," he said. "We've got six careers to figure out, including Joanna's directing commitments."
Further complicating matters: Gold, currently seen on ABC's "Celebrity Mole: Yucatan," is pregnant -- although, coincidentally, her character had already been made pregnant in the script.
"It's great that we were able to pull it off," Taylor said. "And they all adore that Joanna is directing. For them, it's a nice full circle."
Movie will take place in Long Island, where the sitcom was set, but will be shot on a soundstage in New Orleans.
Taylor said the telepic's act breaks will adhere to the different stages of selling a house -- putting it on market, accepting an offer, going into escrow, etc. Narrative will follow kids Mike (Cameron), Ben (Miller), Carol (Gold) and Chrissy (Johnson) Seaver as they all harbor different reasons for trying to keep their parents from selling the house. Parents Jason (Thicke) and Maggie (Kerns) also have very different ideas of their lives post-home. Chelsea Noble also stars, as Mike's wife Kate.
"It's all about communication -- no one will communicate with each other honestly," Taylor said.
The first "Growing Pains" movie attracted 15.1 million viewers and a strong 5.8/14 with adults 18-49.
Scoobiedoo30 01-22-2004, 05:05 PM I am going to enjoy watching The Second Growing Pains Movie
in May of 2004 it will be good to see The Seaver Family again
on The ABC Televison Network Again.
growingpains 01-22-2004, 06:14 PM I did hear it's airing in May 2004, and it's about the parents wanting to sell the family house, and that they're going to start shooting the movie next month.
chrisjb717 01-23-2004, 08:08 PM Hmmm.......Where'd they concoct the idea of "the family house" from? Are we to assume that Jason & Maggie bought back the old Seaver homestead in between the two movies? (They already sold it once - at the end of the original series.) I don't think Mike and Carol would really care if their parents wanted to sell the house they bought when they first returned to NY in the last movie. They didn't live in it. Ben probably wouldn't care either since he also didn't spend a lot of time in it. Can't wait to see how it all unfolds! I hope the actors who played Carol's new husband and stepson return as well.

As I was reading about the movie, I was thinking the exact same thing... Didn't they sell the Seaver home when they moved out? I know they were pretty well off financially, but not enough to keep the Long Island house and one in Washington. The explanation should be interesting.
growingpains 01-26-2004, 11:23 AM i think when they mean selling the family house, they maybe mean the house in Washington, because the one in Long island its already sold

It shouldnt be hard to find an american who can mail you a copy.
When I put my copy of the first movie up for grabs right after it aired, I cant believe how many people from europe jumped me.
I dont know why they dont just release this stuff to dvd, you know. Maybe they will.
chrisjb717 02-08-2004, 05:43 PM I think they sold the Washington house in the first movie. Remember, they moved back to Long Island so that Maggie could run for Congress.
Pavan 02-19-2004, 05:06 PM More info on the plot of the movie and the full title:
PRODUCTION BEGINS ON "GROWING PAINS II: HOME EQUITY," ALL-NEW TWO-HOUR FILM TO AIR IN MAY ON THE ABC TELEVISION NETWORK
Entire Cast of '80s Series Reunites for Production
Production has begun in New Orleans on "Growing Pains II: Home Equity," an all-new two-hour movie based on the hit '80s television comedy. The film will air during May 2004 on the ABC Television Network. Alan Thicke, Joanna Kerns, Kirk Cameron, Tracey Gold, Jeremy Miller, Ashley Johnson and Chelsea Noble will all reprise their roles from the series, which ran for seven seasons on ABC.
Ms. Kerns (whose directing credits include "Defending Our Kids: The Julie Posey Story" and "Boston Public") will direct the movie.
As the lyrics to the "Growing Pains" theme song said, "We're nowhere near the end. The best is ready to begin . . ." "Growing Pains II: Home Equity" finds Jason (Thicke) and Maggie Seaver (Ms. Kerns) ready to start a new chapter in their lives. With the nest finally empty, they have put the family home up for sale and are preparing to spend their retirement years traveling (Maggie longs for a villa in Tuscany, while ever-thrifty Jason wants to tour the USA in a Winnebago).
But all that's easier said than done, as Mike (Cameron) and a very pregnant Carol (Ms. Gold, pregnant in real life with her third child), each with their own agenda for wanting their parents to stay put, team up to sabotage the move, while little brother Ben (Miller), now a realtor, needs the big sale of his parents' home to please his boss. Meanwhile, Chrissie (Ms. Johnson), now an aspiring singer, just wants to get out from under her parents' watchful gaze so she can launch her career as a rock star.
Jim Green and Mark Bacino are executive producers, Albert J. Salzer is producer and Christine Lynch & Loren Segan wrote the script for the film, from Green/Epstein/Bacino Productions, Inc.
bschmale1113 02-19-2004, 11:10 PM It Kinda a Good Idea but will have liked it better is they do a Chirstmas Movie about the updated Verison of Growing Pains it great but I don't want it to be what has Brady Bunch has done beacuse If they good ratings I Don't want a series and it will turn bad I You to was Growing Pains when i was kids I will watch it but I wish that others TV Shows can do Movies to updated the Series and get a end that people ready want to see Like Full House When Danny getting Married or D. J and Steve Getting Married and Who's the Boss? Seeing That Sam has Kids and Tony & Angela are Married but I don't want that Growing Pains to have too many?
I am kind of exxcited about a new movie but I just hope that the guy who played Carol's husband returns they are not mentioning him or his son..I hope they both return too...
barb1686 04-04-2004, 09:04 PM It will air May 10th :D ...Tracey was on Ryan Seacrest's show and Kirk dropped by to surprise her and this date was mentioned.
Sounds like Carol will be pregnant too. ;)

So it will air on a Monday then. That's kind of strange. I figured it would air on a Saturday or Sunday That will be during my final's week, so I won't get to see it. I wish it wasn't airing until later that month. Finals will not be over for me until Friday, May 14. Maybe it will reair at some point.
I know it is kind of weird to have it on a Monday, I thought for sure they'd air it on the Wonderful World of Disney like last time. Maybe they'll change it to that, but it doesn't seem likely since the date was already mentioned, right?
You can't take a 2 hour break? lol :D ...just tape it, or have someone else tape it. ;)
dlemond 04-05-2004, 12:39 PM There is no listing for this on IMDB.
That makes me wonder what is up.

Huh...I don't know then. I just wish I would find out soon so that I don't miss it lol
My friend said she saw a commercial for it...she didn't remember where she saw the commercial though (she's not a fan of the show). IMO, I wouldn't think they'd have commercials for it quite yet...but she said she saw one for the new one. I'm thinking she just saw a commercial for first movie, but she claims it was for the new one...has anyone else seen the commercial?
barb1686 04-15-2004, 03:51 PM Turns out it may not air until the fall! Here is an article from tvguide.com
Growing Pains Reunion Dish
by Daniel R. Coleridge
Reunited and it feels so good...?
Hey, TV-nostalgia buffs! Aching for another Growing Pains reunion movie? Well then, you'll be pleased to know Growing Pains II: Home Equity just wrapped production in New Orleans, which doubles for the Seaver family's Long Island home base. All of Pains's original cast is on hand — TV mom Joanna Kerns even directs — but, unsurprisingly, Leo DiCaprio isn't coming back as Luke.
"I'm sure they thought of it," Alan Thicke (aka Dr. Jason Seaver) tells TV Guide Online, chuckling. "And I'm sure [Leo's] not available." Fortunately, the real-life pregnancy of Tracey Gold — whose career was recently "executed" on Celebrity Mole: Yucatan — will help make up for the personnel shortage. Gold's pregnant, so Carol's expecting onscreen, too.
"I'm still trying to get used to the concept of playing a grandfather," the 57-year-old Thicke says. "I've now moved into what I call the 'ferzage' category. It's a new demographic that I invented. That's where people start saying, 'Well, he looks good for his age'."
Will we see Carol's baby birthed in the TV movie? "Worse than that," Thicke mock laments. "[My grandchildren] are semi-grown children [around] 11 or 12. These are the children of Kirk Cameron and Tracey's characters. They were little tykes in the first [reunion] movie. So I'm now a grandfather to kids the same age as the children were back in the series!"
This fresh dose of Growing Pains nostalgia — which will likely air this fall — sure doesn't hurt Thicke's career as an author of fatherhood-advice books. The next one, How to Raise Kids Who Won't Hate You, is due out in the fall. And as host of the TV series Animal Miracles, Thicke tries to set a good parental example for fellow Animal Planet personality Steve Irwin. "I won't be dangling my 1-year-old in front of a crocodile, that's all I can tell you. No dangling!" — Additional reporting by Ileane Rudolph

I thought so too...:(
lis23 04-16-2004, 02:35 PM I'm still happy either way, as long as we get another movie, but come on now!! I am not a patient person!
barb1686 04-17-2004, 11:55 AM Yeah, me too...I mean, I wasn't even expecting another reunion movie (at least not for a very long time) so this is better than I could've imagined.

Pavan 08-13-2004, 04:05 PM Finally a set date for the second reunion movie:
Saturday, October 16
8:00-10:00 p.m. “Wonderful World of Disney” – “Growing Pains 2: Return of the Seavers”
This should be still tentative, since last time in May they had two dates and changed it both times.
If it does get changed do you have any idea if it would be moved up sooner or to a later date? (I'm really hoping that if it does get changed it won't be the week prior because I have to be out of town that week).

I missed the first movie the first few times it aired and finally got to see it back in March, so I'm refusing to just set the VCR to record it and watch it later because I figure with my luck something will happen to it and I'll miss this one too. :D
ILuvZackMorris 10-09-2004, 11:29 PM I've seen the commercial 2 times (on ABC Family) and there is a small ad in the TV Guide for the week of October 10 - October 16th.

But she probably will attend :)
Collinwood2003 10-13-2004, 06:05 PM With the movie coming out is there any hope that it will be on nick at nite or some other channel? Or if anyone has most of the epsiodes in very good quality I can put it on dvd and you would get a dvd set also.
Will anyone be taping the Tony Danza growing pains reunion? I don't get the upn channel it comes on. I have lots to trade for it including the first growing pains movie and I should have the E true hollywood story. And I have misc. epsiodes of the series.

I don't have any episodes to trade, but the First Growing Pains movie will air again on ABC Family at 6pm on the 16th right before the new reunion movie.
I highly doubt Nick at Nite will start airing Growing Pains. They just added Fresh Prince to the line-up, BUT if they do, hopefully they get rid of Full House and add Growing Pains...that'd be great! :D

No, they should get rid of ROSEANNE! Full House still needs to be on Nick at Nite cause they actually show the real credits unlike ABC Family which doesn't even show the credits properly.
It'd be even better if Growing Pains was released on DVD.
barwars 10-16-2004, 10:10 PM I liked that they were aware of the series.
The joke about Leo DeCaprio, and the one about "always finding time to laugh from 8:30-9 on Tuesday nights"
The song on the cell phones was a nice touch.
Overall.... I think I did like this one more, although the best of the reunions doesnt even compare to the worst of the episodes.
MandieR1980 10-16-2004, 10:10 PM It was ok I was annoyed with the fact that they were trying to make us believe that that is their old house not unless it got knocked down and got rebuilt bigger.
somethingofafan 10-16-2004, 10:12 PM I thought it was interesting... it felt like the sitcom, something most reunion movies skip in favor of sickening schmaltz, so that was a plus (though in any other genre it would be a minus, except for skipping the schmaltz).
I noticed that they mentioned that they had sold the same house before (a reference to the series finale). It didn't particularly look like the same house (actually, it didn't look a thing like it), but I just chalked that up to the difference between sitcom sets and more realistic single-camera dwellings.
A less forgivable alteration in continuity was the surname of Carol's husband.
Where I must give the special its highest marks, though, is in its trueness to the characters.

Me too. I was hoping we would get a view of it as if it were an actual episode.
But, no, reunions are never filmed like the originals. (besides The Brady Bunch.... but I dont think that technically ever ended)
ILuvZackMorris 10-16-2004, 10:17 PM They made a major mistake with Carol. When she got married, her husband was a single dad. Where was her stepkid? Was he even mentioned? Would have been nice to have the same actor playing the husband.
Previous reunion movie had Kate making sure her kids didn't eat meat - was that continued?
Semi Disappointing. I would have loved the beginning credits to be sort of how they did the growing up pictures in the show's opening credits. That would have been cool.

It is their old house, it's not gonna look the same, they remodeled, it, and think about it, Jason added a panic room, that's gonna make the house bigger too ;)

Semi Disappointing. I would have loved the beginning credits to be sort of how they did the growing up pictures in the show's opening credits. That would have been cool.
 Yeah I wondered where her stepson was, I guess they figured we'd forget about him

that panic room was nothing more than a closet with a steel door LOL

I never knew that song had a second verse.

The first link you can download the different versions of the theme song, just scroll down to Growing Pains
The second one is the lyrics :)
chrisjb717 10-16-2004, 10:31 PM The movie wasn't bad, but I do have some complaints.
I would have loved it if they had just picked up some time after the last movie left off instead of creating an alternate past for the Seavers. We all know they didn't grow up in the house suggested by the movie. They all seemed out of place in that place.
Are we also supposed to assume that Maggie lost the Senate election? If she was elected, her term wouldn't have ended yet, but she seemed to be unemployed in the movie.
Did Mike and Kate have more kids in the first movie?
What happened to Carol's stepson? Seems like they were hoping we'd forget about him, thus making her "stay-at-home mom or executive" dilemma more believeable. (Couldn't she have already made peace with doing both as a stepmother?)
I did like Mike's cell phone ringtone. Kinda catchy! :)
They did do one thing better here than in the last movie -- including the theme song at the end of the movie. (Only a snippet of the instrumental version appeared in the 2000 movie.)
Loved the pictures at the beginning too -- just like old times.
Did you catch the allusion to Leo DiCaprio? (He probably did wear that jacket! lol) Alan Thicke's actual book on parenting? the Growing Pains sweatshirt? the Mike Seaver t-shirt? the allusion to the episode where Mike supposedly cheated on a test by writing the answers on his shoe?
Hope I'm not being too nitpicky. It really was a good, fun movie, main storyline aside. It was great seeing the Seavers again. :)

 true enough, but I was looking at the living room when they came down the stairs and it's def. the same. The front door looks like how it was on the original series, off to the left of the front door was Jason's office he had during the series

I for one, think that is stupid.
Part of a reunion should be reuniting someplace the view remembers.

I'm pretty sure they had at least 5 kids in the first movie, near the end(of the first movie) they adopted another kid
Yeah I loved the little inside jokes, the theme song, the we had problems every week, every tuesday night from 8:30-9:00 LOL!

Kind of like what they did to the Happy Days set when it changed from single-camera to multicamera, ony in reverse.

It worked because the original series would throw in something like that every once in a while.
Cody&Lilly 10-16-2004, 11:46 PM I thought it was awesome! :) Great seeing them again.
Does anybody know when they'll be showing the 1st movie again?

They showed the first movie on ABC Family tonight at 6pm right before the second movie aired on ABC :)
I loved it. Great to see them again.
I loved it when Carol & Mike tried to Sabotage the sale of the house. Ah, the good old times.
:)
barwars 10-17-2004, 09:03 AM Did anybody else notice that Chrissy sounded normal?? (as opposed to her usual "nasal voice")
barb1686 10-17-2004, 11:14 AM Here are my thoughts on the movie:
Overall, it wasn't consistent enough, but it was still cute and I loved it.
- I'm a bit confused as to Mike's kids...and I thought he adopted them all, but here they kind of make it sound like the oldest daughter is his biological daughter...who knows. I have to find my tape of the first movie to compare....
- Carol's step-son....you'd think they would at least have him at the end with everyone else...
- The house...even if it was remodeled it wouldn't look that different. The kitchen followed into the living room and here in the movie it didn't. And I'd have to watch it again, but wasn't the garage located on the opposite side of the house than in the episodes?
- Weren't Jason and Maggie in a different house during the last movie?
- What happened to Maggie being in office?
- I loved the little jokes about the show. Especially the jacket stories...referring back to an old episode :D Loved it when Carol put on her old glasses.
- I didn't like the little special effects during the movie...the beginning was fine how they went from picture to picture...but I wish the movie was more like the old episodes.
- I LOVED the ending! It was perfect! The song sounded awesome and I loved how they were all picnicing...in Italy? Were they all visiting their parents for Christmas?...cause baby Seaver was wearing red and green so I wondered.
I'm sure I have many other thoughts, but I'll stop there. lol

...I noticed she sounded more like Chrissy when she was a kid. Like she doesn't sound the way she did in like What Women Want, etc. ...I'm sure she studied her old voice and did that to recapture Chrissy for us. :)
Prinssdi 10-17-2004, 11:24 AM does anyone know where i can download the version of the theme song that was playing at the end of the movie??
Adamantium 10-17-2004, 01:10 PM I only saw bits of the movie. Was that supposed to be their house from the actual sitcom. Because in the final episode of "Growing Pains" they moved. In the first episode of "Hangin' with Mr. Cooper" Cooper bought the Seaver's house. They eventually remodeled and probably pretended like that never happened, but it did.
I'd really like to see some the the Seaver's friends in the movie. Mainly Boner.

 it was the same house, they showed it from the outside, its def. the same.
I'd forgotten about Mr. Cooper buying the house, and if it was remodeled that's why it looks different, plus it's been almost 20 years since the show debuted, so times have changed ;) and it's been 12 years since the show went off the air, and man oh man, I wouldn't expect the house to look the same at all :)

I'm wondering if maybe the original set was destroyed, so they just had to come up with a new set and pass it off as either the original Seaver home, or the Seaver home re-modeled.
TVJedi 10-17-2004, 02:22 PM Did anyone actually see this in HDTV? MY affiliate here showed it in standard definition on the digital channel. I was a little disappointed by that.
But the movie was a fun watch. :)
newlife 10-17-2004, 03:03 PM Everyone is taking the house thing to seriously, maybe it was not possible to use the same houses set for what ever reason, they did film on location so the outside of the would never have matched what it did on the serious anyway.(which is only house front on the warner brothers lot) But the ouside was close to the outside of the original anyway. The story was funny and like the hsow so I am happy.
barb1686 10-17-2004, 05:52 PM Actually, if you saw the original airing of Hangin' With Mr. Cooper they explained the house...they said that it was a loaner until they could afford a decent set...they wanted to see if the show was a hit and it was and then a new house (very similar) was brought in.
But some place could have parts the house...possibly one of the Disney Amusement Parks.
But even though the house wasn't perfect and it wasn't as nice as I had hoped, I still loved seeing them together and that's what is important. I loved this one so much more than the last one because they were more themselves and it was more about family than about politics. We saw them going through old stuff and we got to relieve memories. I loved it. :D

I would agree with you if the house wasn't supposed to be such a major part of the plot.
Still, it was fun seeing them all together again and it was good to see the characters being more like their old selves than they were in teh first movie. I agree that was more important than the house.
And I really did love the version of hte song that Ashley sang, and would love to be able to get an MP3 of it.
Maybe if there is a third reunion they could all go to Hawaii again like they did in the series and recreating the old sets and other stuff wouldn't be an issue in that case. :D
ILuvZackMorris 10-17-2004, 09:51 PM someone asked about Carol's baby........he was a wearing a little baby romper (?) that had snowmen on it, so they must have gotten together for christmas.
I wonder if that was Tracey's real life baby, since she was really pregnant during the filming. And the baby looked brand new compared to most movies which have a baby that's like 3 months old playing a newborn.

I was the one that mentioned that it was probably Christmas time. But no, she was still pregnant there. When she's holding the baby in her house, she's wearing black but she's still very pregnant...plus, the shooting is only like a month. That baby was about 2-3 months old.

I'm pretty sure only the press can access those pictures. And they aren't allowed to release them to anyone except in their magazines, etc.
I've uncovered some reviews of the second GP movie on the old TWoP website (https://web.archive.org/web/20140404234711/http://forums.televisionwithoutpity.com/topic/2851490-growing-pains/page-2). In effect, most people on there (https://web.archive.org/web/20140404234623/http://forums.televisionwithoutpity.com/topic/2851490-growing-pains/page-3) didn't think that it was a great movie.
