View Full Version : You know you're obsessed when. . .

Ok, so I have a friend who's obsessed w/ Charmed and I'm totally usurping this from their message board, but I thought it was sort of a fun idea. This is a thread to share the things you do that make you realize the extent of your obsessiveness. For example:

You know you're obsessed when you can refer to the majority of episodes by name. (That implicates almost everyone on this board). ;)

Also:

You know you're obsessed when the waitress at Cheers asks if it's your first time there and your friend says in an exasperated voice "No, we've DEFINITELY been here many times before." (Apparently, I'd dragged him there for dinner one too many times). Oops!

lol... ok

You know that your obsessed when you can tell what season it is depending on the actors hairstyles...

You know your obsessed when you can tell what episode it is two seconds after you tuned in by the clothes that they are wearing.

EVERY DOLLAR YOU GET IS SPENT ON GEORGE WENDT. PICTURE OR WHATEVER YOU CAN GET. DEDICATING ONE SIDE OF UR ROOM WITH PICS, 8X10'S AND MOVIES. TRACKING DOWN HIS HIGH SCHOOL AND CONVINCING THEM TO GIVE YOU HIS HOME ADDRESS. WATCHING HIS FILMS ALL DAY AND TAPING EVERY APPEARANCE HE HAS ON TV. READING WHATEVER YOU CAN ON HIM AND WANTING ONLY IN LIFE TO MEET YOUR HERO. CHOMP ON THAT.:)

you know your obsessed when...

you have a cheers sign hanging on your bedroom door
when the theme song plays you blast the volume and sing along
when every chance you get you walk into the actual cheers bar and say "afternoon everybody"
when someone asks you "what's up" or "how life treating you", you reply with a 'normism'
you feel unsatisfied at night if you go to bed w/o watching cheers
your ears perk up whenever you hear the word 'Showdown' or the phrase 'I'll Be Seeing You'

you know your obsessed when today, because of my sisters graduation, I went an (gasp...sigh....sob) an entire day without (sniff sniff) cheers in a year.....and mind you that i only discovered it a year ago......I feel so ....unhappy...lol! i don't know it's like a weird empty feeling, and i can't watch one of my tapes or the Dvd because im suppose to be asleep already (I have to wake up @ 5:45 am tomorrow morning)...but i just can't sleep....lol!

oh well i'll try and think of one of my favorites...ok i'm going to run "The boys in the bar" through my head...lol (don't ask)

I love that one! The best scene is the last scene with Sam and Diane. Lol the sexual tension is so thick u can like cut it with a knife....lol? I love the end when you see the waiter ask them if they want anything else and they are eating everything!!

You know you're obsessed when... once you get married and have kids, you want to name him or her after Sam and/or Diane.

DianeChambers87
06-12-2003, 02:17 PM
yea but i wouldn't name both of them Sam and diane. I would name one of them and if it's a boy get him into little league as quickly as possible and if it's a girl die her blonde (though most likely because im blond she'll be blond) and Make her listen to Classical Music, Give her top education....lol! and then I would look like crazy if it's a boy for a girl named diane and if it's a girl for a guy name sam.....ok..this sounds a little bit...delusional..... But thats only IF i have kids which im not planning to.........

haha. I can't wait till Boston. Is there really a cardboard cut out of George Wendt there. hmmmm. I've never stolen anything before.:)

Ria
06-15-2003, 01:28 PM
I'm trying to remember. I know there's one of Rhea Pearlman right outside the giftshop and there used to be one of Shelley on the stairs going up to the Hampshire House (where Melville's is on the show). There are tons of pics of Norm, but I'm not sure if there is a cardboard cut-out.

Speaking of which: "You know you're obsessed when you're more into the show than the people who work at Cheers." Explanation: It was the 20th ann. of the debut at Cheers Boston, so we went over to Faneuil Hall (the replica) to avoid the crowd at Beacon Hill (we went over there later, though). And they were supposed to show the Cheers marathon on N@N and have a burger eating contest, etc. First of all, there was NO ONE there--seriously, we were the only people at the restaurant at one point. Then, when the marathon finally came on, the waiters started complaining b/c they didn't want to turn off the football. They didn't even know which channel was Nick. Then they kept looking at us funny b/c I was psyched that the show was on. I was seriously appalled!! How did they get to work there when there are so many loyal fans who are clearly better suited to the job???!!! :(

DianeChambers87
06-15-2003, 02:24 PM

You know your obsessed when you spend more time on this board than you do checking your mail or talking to people through a messenger

You know your obsessed when every time the names Sam, Diane, Rebecca, Carla, coach, Woody, Fraiser, Lilith, Norm, and Cliff are mentioned anywhere anytime or anyplace you immediately turn your complete attention to where you heard it or saw it, then smile because you are reminded of last nights episode!

the other day I arguing with my sister and im walking out of the room and i just go : "Culture is wasted on you! Oxygen is wasted on you!" lol!!! then I kind of stopped when I had realized what I just had said and sort of started laughing to myself. Which brings me to another point

ok I got one....and before i say anything YES this really did happen to me today I am not making it up! lol... ok

You know your obsessed, when you have your first session with a psychologist (today) and it is a 45 minute session when 20 minutes of those 45 are spent discussing Cheers....Im not kidding she asked me you know what type of tv shows i liked and I said sitcoms she asked me which sitcoms and go well (i didn't want to be obvious so i said Cheers second even though ofcourse it is number one always on my list...lol on the verge of sounding corny...or maybe too late) Curb your Enthusiasm, Cheers, and then i don't know what i said i made up like two more. So she kept going back to cheers lol she kept discussing with me all the characters. And she had a whole theory on the Sam and Diane relationship....lol it was the weirdest thing!!!! She knew every character and everything!! lol.... Go figure my mother finds the one psychologist in this area that's a cheers fanatic! lol

Oh my gosh, it's so funny you said that. I did something similar. My friend has a website and he really wanted some fan fics on it. He has a friend who really likes Michael Jackson, so there were some MJ fan fics, and he had written some Charmed ones, but he really wanted some Cheers ones. I refused to write them for a long time b/c I didn't know what to write about and I wasn't sure I loved the idea of fan fics. He finally just told me to write about stuff that actually happened to us as if it happened to the characters on Cheers--so I ended up writing a three-part series. So yeah, "You know you're obsessed when. . .(see above)!" :)

No, I didn't post them (although they are posted on my friend's page). I don't think they're all that funny unless you know the stories behind them, and they got sort of silly. :)

PS Maria, I LOVE the Money Pit. It is possibly my favorite Shelley movie.:D

DianeChambers87
06-19-2003, 08:17 PM
Ria, It is hilarious she works great with Tom Hanks!! lol i love the scene where the bathtub fall through the roof and he starts laughing...They possibly took the two actors in the world with the strangest, but yet great laugh and put them in one movie!! lol I LOVE SHELLEYS LAUGH! Even if she's laughing at something that is not funny you laugh because it's her laugh...

Ofcourse it's powerplay! lol!! and if you see the quote I have on my signature I actually have that scene or well quote on video on my computer! It's so great...BTW has anybody ever noticed that in ANY season every single time that for some reason Sam had to take of his pants he was ALWAYS wearing those boxers? like probably(hopefully) not the same exact ones but they were always blue and always that design! I noticed last night when Rebecca left him in the elevator...lol poor baby!!

Random question, Maria : Where did you get the name Elizabeth B. Malone? I know you use it in your fan fics--did you just like it, or is it significant in some other way?

DianeChambers87
06-19-2003, 08:56 PM
lol .... the name which I will by the way bring up in the fanfic by sam, which by the way I will update soon I am working on Chapter 4. Ok the Name Elizabeth Barrett Malone, came from Diane's cat "Elizabeth Barrett Browning" which ofcourse was Diane's favorite Poet, if I am not mistaken. I was thinking of Names and that one seemed so natural I decided on it, although for obvious reasons I changed the Browning to Malone. So in the fanfic i am planning for Sam to ask Diane in the end...well actually I don't want to reveil anything, let's just say he remembers Diane's dead cat's name..lol;)

Ria

Also, I have a new YKYOW. "You know you're obsessed when you try and assume characteristics of the Cheers characters." For example, I helped run a model congress conference this past February and the dress was business formal, so I had to wear a business suit every day for the duration of the conference. I thought it was my chance to put on a Lilith attitude. At the end of the conference, the delegates had to evaluate us in various categories on a scale of 1-5, and write down comments. Overall, my ratings were good and the comments were like "professional, knowledgeable etc. . ." My lowest score on every single evaluation sheet was in "approachability." So I thought I had successfully channelled Lilith! ;)

DianeChambers87

Ria
06-19-2003, 09:14 PM

 Ok this just happened it ....it was so funny to me even though my entire family didn't know why I was laughing.

You see we were having dinner, and the phone rings, I pick it up and it's my next door neighbor Diane (lol coincidence...?) calling because her daughter REBECCA and my little sisters carpool with each other. And she was calling to tell my mom that She would take the girls in the morning but Rebecca wasn't coming home with my mother tomorrow afternoon. So she tells me to give my mom the message. So far so good.

Ok here it is...You know your obsessed when you start saying the message "Mom, Diane called to tell you that Rebecca ( and then I started laughing hysterically when I realized what I was saying) isn't coming home with you tomorrow but Diane is still driving the girls tomorrow morning.. (I was in tears by this point) lol and my dad's like " Why are you laughing?!" and I looked around and saw all the other blank faces and kindof composed myself, sat down ....and tried to finish dinner without a giggle.

Ok, much to say. First, Maria, it is the one who acts like Diane, but she doesn't like it when I point that out. (Our other roommate agrees that she does act like her though). Second, Steve, Wendt films abound in Cambridge. I now have memberships to three video stores in town. But I need more recommendations!! Last, here's my new one: For background, I don't know if anyone has seen the Frasier episodes where the Cheers characters make appearances, but in "Cheerful Goodbyes" w/ Carla, Norm, and Cliff, Frasier and Niles come to Boston and they meet Cliff and get sucked into going to his going away party. The whole time, Niles is upset b/c he's afraid they're going to miss their dinner reservations at L'Espalier. Since Frasier is constantly going on and on about he is the cultural superior of everyone else in the bar. . .

"You know you're obsessed when you make reservations at L'Espalier just to see how pretentious a place it really is"

(That was a really long explanation. . .;) )

I had a new one today!! "You know you're obsessed when you're studying over lunch at a bar and you look at your friend and say 'Oh my gosh, I feel just like Diane!'." Yeah, my friend was totally confused and was like, "Diane who?" (Also, I was eating there b/c I was visiting a friend who works there as a waitress--the parallels continue. . .)

you know you're obsessed when you plan on watchin the first episode, and the last 2 episodes of Cheers - Season 1 JUST because you've had it for exactly 6 months, and have probably watched it at least 10 times.

Someone might have said this, but oh well.

You know you're obsessed when you're sitting there doing something, then yell out something that you heard on Cheers.

Or keep repeating something you heard on there as your "phrase of the day."

Haha... I once kept saying "You can't flush a cat." My friends were like "Wha?"

DianeChambers87

Holy sh*t people...I said this the other day..and it scared me....I think i'm too obsessed.

Someone was saying something about something, and I wanted to add something and I ACTUALLY this is NOT JOKING started out by say "You know it's a little known fact that....(i choked..) " my friend's like "what is?" and I said what I was going to say...but that scared the hell out of me.

First, in response to that conversation: "YKYOW you have to search for a precise definition of the word obsessed in order to make it sound like you're not so obsessed that you frighten others." Hehe, j/k ;)

And my most recent one "YKNOW you're at a piano bar (not Cheers) and you suddenly stop the conversation you're having with your friends because the pianist has just started to play the Cheers theme song and clearly this takes precedence."

You know your obsessed when you search the entire web for anything you can find on Cheers [pictures, descriptions, etc] print them out and add them to your Cheers book. I've had one since two summers ago... my parents are pissed because I'm wasting all the ink.

-You are on the site so much you can't get offline & your parental units about ready 2 pull the plug & say "no more internet for a while".

-You are constantly thinking about the show & laughing 2 yourself about what happened on the show (hence being obsessed)

-Dream only about Sam & Diane

You know you're obsessed when: You read through all of this, and can relate to all of it.

Chambers
04-28-2004, 05:20 PM
Yes! I definitely relate to all of this too. I thought I was crazy! But I can't be crazy if so many other people are the same way, right? Wait - don't answer that.

I have another one. You know you're obsessed when every time you go to bed without your nightly dose of cheers on nick at nite your subconscious makes you dream of cheers to make up for it.

Similarly, you know you're obsessed when the worst nightmare you've ever had is the following (this really did happen to me last night):
I dreamt that they were making Cheers 2 or something. Anyway, Diane had failed as a writer and was living on her mother's estate in the country. That's where the show was set. Sam was also there and he and Diane were running around and flirting in the countryside (that's not the bad part). Then, all of a sudden Cliff and Norm come by and get this: Cliff was played by David Schwimmer and Norm was skinny!! Noooo! Then - the worst part of it all - they do a close up on Diane's face and guess who plays her! Guess! None other than Jessica Simpson! What could be worse?

Ria

Welcome DianeDiane! Scary dream!! ;)

Here's my latest:

You know you're obsessed when you're in an actual bar and you say to the bartender "You know, if this were Cheers, you'd be Sam and Sarah would be Woody, and I'd be Lilith!!!" really enthusiastically. . .Yeah, did that yesterday:rolleyes: (In my defense, he's a friend of mine. . .)

BebeSternin
04-28-2004, 09:09 PM
No, DianeDiane. I don't think any of us are crazy..or even obsessed. *Laughs* Enthusiastic maybe?

That is a terrifying dream. Jessica Simpson. Now I'm going to have nightmares.

I've done that too. Actually I do it all the time. Not in bars though-school and places like that.

*Thinks*

You know you're obsessed when.. you're watching TV one night and suddenly decide to become either a barmaid, psychiatrist, mailman, accountant, or baseball player.
