In case you don't know, after Nic Colasanto died on February 12, 1985 (he was born Nicola Colasanto on January 19, 1924 in New York, New York, according to the Internet Movie Database), the producers decided not to replace him with another actor as "Coach." Instead, the producers decided to create a new character--Woody Boyd, a naive farmboy from Indiana. In the summer of 1985, the producers auditioned several young actors to play Woody. Coincidentally, one of the actors was also named Woody--Woody Harrelson. As you can tell, Woody Harrelson won the role of Woody Boyd, and stayed with the show until "Cheers" was canceled in 1993. I'll betcha that if they hired Sid Caesar to play "Coach" (Legend has it that Caesar auditioned for the role of "Coach" when "Cheers" was being developed), they would have never, ever developed the character of Woody Boyd. Sid would have stayed on the show the entire 11 years.

i have to disagree with you. If they would have hired Sid Ceasar the show would have ended ALOT sooner than it's 11 season run. You see NO other actor could have filled Coach's shoes, the audience would have i think stopped watching and some of the shows chemistry would hae been lost. I think they made an excellent choice with the character woody, because he was so different from coach, but he still filled the void left when Nick died. It was the right choice, as was when Shelley left and they created Rebecca it was perfect because the character was so different from Diane. If they would have gotten another character resembling Shelley long and acting like Diane, it would have i think ended the show too. Rebecca was perfect because she was completely different but again filled the void that was left when Shelley left.

I hate when people replace a character with a different actor. It is ********. They made the right choice with the new characters. Glen Les and Jimmy are my heros. Well they are in line with others, behind the almighty WENDT!
