I was reading one of Lucille's bio books, and it said that she COULD sing, but tried to sing badly for Lucy Ricardo to make it funny.

We know that she can sing, even from I L L. Most of the times when Lucy Ricardo tries to sing, it is unbelievably bad. But when that is not the gist of the comedy, she may sing rather well, as in "Lucy and Ethel Buy the Same Dress," "Lucy Hires an English Tutor" [the funny part is the song itself, so Lucy does not sing her small bit badly] or "Ricky's Hawaiian Vacation."

I've often heard the old addage...You have to know how to sing to sing badly.

Oh come now, i'll bet you can do a mean rendition of Babalu in the shower, or at the office Christmas party!

I wouldn't go near an office Christmas party, even if I did have an office!

And no, I don't sing Babalu in the shower. Requires copious air drumming, which is not sensible on wet, slippery surfaces. Same reason I stopped singing Queen songs in the shower. Well, most of the time.

Her singing sounded pretty decent to me in 'The Long, Long Trailer."

Well, you know what they say, when you ENJOY doing something, it can work miracles. And besides, go listen to Jimmy Durante, Pearl Baily, Louis Armstrong, Maurice Chevalier and so many others who sang lots worse than her.

Splain dear, please - don't go mentioning Maurice Chevalier and singing in the same sentence. Unpleasant imagery. At least Louis Jourdan had the decency to go and make some good films to make up for his forays into song. :)

I mentionned Chevalier because he's a perfect example of charm over talent, he could charm you into thinking you just heard singing. And he did that song with Hermione Ginggeuld sp? in that classic movie musical and then it was redone on a Hope special with Hope and Lucy doing it and it was the same thing, the sentiment involved made you forget nobody could actually sing well. I remember it well was the name of the classic song.

She knew her voice wasn't the best, but she should have had more courage to at least to attempt singing in all those movies were they dubbed her voice, because she DID sing well, until the cigarettes ruined it! She even wanted to talk her way through Mame as Rex Harrison did in My Fair Lady.
