View Full Version : the NEW Jewel

here is an article about the new Jewel. It's like she is a different person. I never thought she would do this. But it could be interesting.
http://www.vh1.com/shared/media/news/images/j/Jewel/jewel180x180.jpg
"The switcheroo might not be as shocking as some might believe, however. Anyone who has been listening to Jewel’s albums will note how she’s accelerated from the bare campfire ditties of Pieces of You to electric guitars and ethnic rhythms on 2001’s This Way. When a remix of that album’s “Serve the Ego” topped the Billboard charts, the singer decided that maybe the time was right to shake things up a bit more." (taste of the article)
DarleneIllyria 06-02-2003, 06:21 PM I've heard her new song 'Intuition'. It sounds okay. I haven't saw the video yet, so I can't really judge her new image.
°Bubbly Blonde° 06-02-2003, 06:27 PM I like her new image.....I saw her on Def Poets W/Russel Simmons and Mos Def, she's really good poet.....
I've always loved Jewel and definitely appreciate the statement she makes with the "Intuition" video.
Mr. Stefani 06-02-2003, 07:38 PM her "new image"(not the video) looks like Debbie Harry and Gwen Stefani.
Hollow 06-02-2003, 08:14 PM lalalala i dunno who that is
*PinkLady* 06-02-2003, 09:17 PM I really like "Intuition," but I haven't seen Jewel's "new image" yet.
AllIWantIsYourClutch 06-02-2003, 10:11 PM Ew. I prefer the old Jewel....She was much better then
¤I Love Clay Aiken¤ 06-02-2003, 11:20 PM I was thinking about making this a thread earlier too lol. But ya, I cant stand the old Jewel, but Intuition is one of my fav. current songs right now and I think she looks really pretty now.

Jewel's new song is cool!
But I do like her old style.
I hope she sticks to her old ways
with just a bit of change.
I love her new sexy look.

I like her new sound. It's more upbeat. I like the songs: Standing Still and the remake of Sweet Home Alabama, originally done by Lynyrd Skynyrd.
MonarC 06-04-2003, 09:35 AM I hope she doesn't forget about her folk sound. I love her first album. It was awesome.

Agreed. Her first cd was awesome.
SBTB Geek 06-04-2003, 11:43 PM I like her new song, it makes a good statement. But, I agree her old style is better. Her last album, This Way is one of her best, next to her debut.

*Marilyn Monroe* 06-05-2003, 07:45 PM While I like the song, it's kind of like she's going against what she was standing for in the first place. Wasnt she, at the beginning, very oposed to the whole popularity thing? Thats just always how I took it, but I could be wrong.

Uh huh. By definition, I think she is a "sell out." I don't know if she'll have more success now than she has before (because she has had success for years), but the fact that she became transformed into the more mainstream pop, means she is a sell out, to me. And the video (which I only saw once? Does anyone know if its ever on TRL? I see MTV playing no music videos lately.), is doing a spoof on pop culture, yet she is coming out with a new pop sound. Like I said before, the girl is a parady of herself! Was it intended? I don't know...
MonarC 06-06-2003, 09:51 AM :( sad to say it but I agree... She did sell herself out in a way because she was so different.. But I can understand how she feels everyone like Christina, Britney, and others are doing the "must be sexy" thing. So she feels like she has to change herself in order to compete. I miss the original Jewel..

IownTheDivision69 06-08-2003, 07:46 PM i miss the old jewel. >_<
MonarC 06-14-2003, 11:49 AM well i think she is changing too much but i have to admit i love the new song. "Intuition" it is so cool... :D
I love it when one of these singers "tarts up" her image, then they argue that since they are aware they are doing it, and it's their decision to start showing the skin(not like the others who have always dressed and acted provocative) it's perfectly okay, and not an attempt to get attention.
Keep it simple, Jewel. Leave the hotpants at home.
;)
MonarC 06-14-2003, 02:17 PM :lol:leave the hot pants at home
that's a good one TJL

Gotta agree w/ TJL & whoever else used the words "Sell out". I was waiting on the entire 1st page of this thread for that. TJL was obviously being facetious about it, but he hit the point right on the nose. We've seen this so many times in the past & heard the same excuse coming out of the artist & it's a drag. I was never a huge Jewel fan to being with, but I did think her grassroots style was cool. Sort of an "anti-Britney" to me when she 1st hit the scene. Then I had a look at the cover of her new album & the 1st thing that popped into my head was 'Christina Aguilera."
On a much more predictable level, didn't Mandy Moore & Jessica Simpson pull the same stunt? I didn't follow their careers at all, but I do have a recollection of one (or both) of em, saying early on that they stay clear of the sex-to-sell approach.

I think it was Christina Aguliara you're talking about. Heck, Britney did it too, but people seemed to gasp more when Christina did it because hers was to such an extreme.

No, no I could swear it was one of those 2. They tried to sell themselves at 1st as wholesome. I don't recall Aguilera doing that from the start.
Ah well- bottomline- I'll say it again Today's Music Sucks.

You could swear it was one of those 2--Mandy or Jessica? I don't think so. Comparing their first videos with their most recent (which aren't all that recent), there was no change in image.
Christina was pretty wholesome in the beginning I think. She was on 20/20 a couple months ago, and during the interview they were bringing up how she was such a goody goody in the beginning and how she said she had no intention of selling herself out. Christina claims said she was forced to do that sort of thing in the beginnging and it wasn't really her, so she decided to come back totally different (basically a slut, lol).
Britney was sort of cutesy in the beginning when she was 16. Although she still dressed pretty badly as I remember. She just kicked it up a notch from album to album. So I wouldn't count her.
I can't think of anyone else...
Rickenbacker 06-14-2003, 03:54 PM Well then I guess it's easy for me & people like me to confuse them all. They're all more or less interchangable to me in look & sound. Like all the boy bands. :)

i take that back after seeing those pics. i was talking about this morning talk show i saw her on.
Another example I just thought of is Sheryl Crow.
She has always said she was against these younger artists strutting around, selling thier bodies, and she would never do someting like that, but lo and behold when her album comes out, she shows up on the cover of one of the "guy mags" wearing a pair of painted on shorts, and in the accompanying story she has the nerve to still complain about the young gals showing skin instead of being a musician.
The bottom line for me about this whole "new image Jewel" thing is this: as an artist, are you legitimatly trying to explore a new style, or are you just using your body to get your videos played and your picture in a magazine?
MonarC 06-14-2003, 06:16 PM it starts out as "i want to be wholesome girl" then the music producers and their mangers say "uhh ya know Britney is going skanky, and if you don't do it too you will be left in the dust."
well that's what I think.
Rickenbacker 06-14-2003, 06:43 PM Another good example, TJL. (Crow) You're right.
It's too bad cause it seems whenever a talented female artist comes along trying to make it on ability alone, they eventually get sucked into the sex quicksand. It's like seeing female performers take big steps ahead only to end up taking 5 steps backwards.
Makes you wonder what the fate of people like India Arie, Michelle Branch, & Norah Jones will be...

DAMN?!! Can't you please stop shoving Christina down his freaking throat?!!! He clearily said he wasn't talking about Christina!!!
Christina was never wholesome in all reality. Her music always had a sexual meaning behind them!
I.E.:
1. "come, come, come and let me out."
2. "come and rub me the right way."
3. "it's paradise, when you and I get close, get tight."
4. "I can't help myself when you put your hands on me."
5. "So emotional... I'm sinking fast in, to an ocean full of you."
6. "I can't help myself when you put your hands on me, I get crazy, and my body turns to gold."
^All of those songs are from her debut.
Christina has always been what many of you call, provacative. She never put herself in the Britney category.
so she decided to come back totally different (basically a slut, lol).
Look behind that. You are the type of ignorant person that Christina always talks about, she just wears those clothes to make a statement--- that we revolve so much on looks, and we never get passed a persons image.
She decided to come back differently. Differently in the way, that she is coming back as her own person, not the sweet, and gullible one created by RCA.
Listen, or read the lyrics to her sophomore album, and then talk. That album shows YOU who she really is.
______
Back to the actual topic:
I'm assuming that he is talking about Jessica Simpson. At first with her debut, "Tender Kisses," she was little miss anti-Brit, and Christina because she was Ms. Religious, Virginity, and never showed skin.
Initially, all she sang were love ballads.
After the lukewarm, yet impressive success of her debut CD Jessica wanted more success. She wanted the success Britney had at the time. But Ms. Spears was the complete opposite of what Simpson preached for.
So she did an attempt to be a fellow pop-diva. He sophomore album,"Irresistible" contained several wannabe Britney/Christina songs- such as, "Irresistible," and "A Little Bit." Along with her new sound came a new image. For her sophomore album, she started wearing tube tops, cleavage baring dresses, and low-rise jeans.- The complete opposite of her old image.
Her sophomore album became a disaster. It had extremely poor sales, and didn't produce a significant hit single. Although the sales of her debut weren't gigantic-- the sales of "Irresistible" made her debut seem impecable.
She's currently trying to get back to the stripped-down ballad, yet they are a little bit more risque- since she is a newlywed, and lost her virginity.
I believe her new single is titled "The Sweetest Sin".... seriously.
Rickenbacker 06-15-2003, 02:32 AM LOl! Ok, so I *wasn't* losing my mind. I thought it was either Moore or Simpson I was thinking about. For a minute there, I thought I was going crazy..
Well, if those lyrics are off CA's debut- they speak for themselves, don't they?
:)

AH! I'm scared now...:(
Cashodeen 06-15-2003, 09:19 PM Whoa, SBTB Geek... calm down there. I was giving my opinions, not trying to shove anything down anyone's throat. I was trying to think of who he could mean. Mandy and Jessica never changed their image as far as I remembered, so I was thinking maybe he did mean Christina.
You can think what you want, but the majority of the population, saw Christina make a huge turn around from pretty wholesome to pretty skanky. When Genie in a Bottle was out, she said in an interview that it wasn't meant to be sexual. Even if it was meant to be, the WHOLESOME Christina was trying to keep a clean image.
And I saw her on 20/20. She said herself that she was forced to hold that cleaner image back then because she was new to the music industry and couldn't do things her own way. She says "Stripped" is really her, and how she has always wanted to be. In the interview she also said "what is wrong with a girl showing her sexuality?"
She obviously is dressing more provactively, which subjects her to being called "slutty." Don't get a trama because some of us think Christina went a little overboardin the looks department. And yes, I know all about her profound lyrics in the new album. And yes, I like the new album myself. That doesn't change how I think she looks. I think she could have been just as effective without looking slutty.

No, you weren't going crazy. I took for granted that you think today's music sucks and were maybe getting these pop singers mixed up. It turns out, you remembered better than I did! Actually, I don't even think I knew Jessica went to the sex-to-sell approach. I just know her second album slopped. I'm glad SBTB Geek came here to set the record straight!
Something I remember now about Jessica Simpson...And, SBTB Geek, correct me if I'm wrong, (and don't yell or call me ignorant :p)... but didn't Jessica kind of become a "sell out" twice? I remember early in her career she wanted to sing christian music, but was persuaded to go pop so she could be the next Britney Spears. (Although, since she sang mostly ballads at first, I don't know how true that is.) Wonder how things will be for her when she comes out with her new album...
And how is Jewel doing? Has selling-out, been "successful" for her?
SBTB Geek 06-16-2003, 07:41 PM Sorry for calling you ignorant, that was very ignorant of me to judge you by simply reading one of your posts.
Back to topic:
Well I guess we can call Jessica a double sell-out- but if we actually think about it, she had nothing to "sell" in the first place.
She's just confused.... I think.
Well Jewel's new image is doing well. Her new single, "Intuition" is climbing up the charts, and her new album debuted on the No. 2 spot, Metallica was 1.
The reviews for her new album haven't been bad either.
pandora_spocks 06-21-2003, 12:15 AM Earlier today, I saw Jewel's video for Intuition and I have to say that I love it. Jewel has a beautiful voice and it sounds good anyway she sings. :lookaroun Just my thoughts.
