I've noticed that the Carla and Sammy Relationship gets closer in the Rebecca years. I think that it was like that before Diane came. Then Diane was there and Sam wasn't Carla's hound anymore. Then Diane left and Sam went back to being Sammy...

I noticed that, too. Sam and Carla were so close near the end that he could reveal his baldness to her. That moment is one of the most surprising moments in the series, with Carla's shock and the audience reacting to it.

Sam: On the morning of august 12, 1989......

Sam and Carla grew closer as the show went on. They had a neat relationship. You could see that they truly cared for one another. They looked out for each other.
During the Diane days, it wasn't so evident. Carla had such contempt for Diane that it put a little distance between her and Sam.
Once Diane was out of the picture, the writers tightened up their friendship.
