For the second time in three nights, Mother Nature let the area know who was boss as "gustnadoes," high winds and rain ripped the area.

"We had a large number of supercell storms — storms that could produce tornadoes — that moved through the whole northern Illinois area," said Bill Wilson, meteorologist with the National Weather Service. "It produced numerous reports of tornado touchdowns across most of northern Illinois."

When asked where the specific touchdowns were located, he responded, "There were too many to name."

He added that they had received some sporadic reports of damage on Essington Road in Joliet, in Lockport and southern Will County.

The most serious damage appeared to be in the area of Englewood Avenue and Princeton Street between Lockport and Joliet.

Will County police said Illinois 171 going into Lockport from the south would be closed for several hours due to downed power lines. Police said the area saw damage to trees and some power outages.

The roof was damaged at two businesses, one an auto body shop. Police, firefighters and utility crews were in the area late Friday night.

In Joliet, Jason Truschke, an employee at Ace Hardware at Ingalls and Essington, said a tornado touched down just after 8 p.m.

The tornado, he said, was the width of two car lengths.

The twister didn't do much damage, but knocked over an advertising sign at Pines Rental and blew around some flowerpots.

"As soon as we saw it, we all ran in back," Truschke said.

There also were unconfirmed reports of funnel sightings near Wilmington-Peotone Road about three miles east of Wilmington and at Patterson Road and Illinois 53.

The storm system started about 5 p.m. The brunt of the storm hit the Joliet area at about 8 p.m.

Joliet police said a roof blew off a house at 3107 Ingalls Ave., but there were no injuries.

The Joliet Fire Department didn't have any confirmed funnel touchdowns, but "just in case, we did set off the warning sirens, because we did have confirmed high winds coming at us," Batalion Chief Rich Marose said.

There was also wind damage on Albert D'Ottavio Drive in Joliet, just north of Ingalls Avenue. Trees in two different yards had been ripped from their roots and were lying across driveways, and neighbors were finding tree limbs and other debris in their yards and on the street.

Danielle Quirk, 12, found her tree in her driveway, the family's basketball pole blown over and paneling from the backyard shed littering the street.

Ann Harhen found a piece of her neighbor's aluminum siding wrapped around a tree in her back yard.

The tornado sirens also interrupted graduation at Joliet West High School. Students and guests were evacuated for a time, and then the ceremony was allowed to resume.

A tree also reportedly hit a house at 1308 Raymond St.
