Remember that ODAAT's original premise was Ann, single mom who was raising her daughters and her attempting to thwart the advances of her younger male friend. It's been ages since I've seen these particular shows, but how was he written out? I remember my mom saying "Why doesn't Ann just marry him? She'd have all the money in the world and she wouldn't have to work!" So much for women's lib!

I remember that episode being two parts. David got a job offer in L.A. and wanted to marry Ann (Of course), so he warms Barbara and Julie up to the idea and they start pressuring Ann into marrying him but she decided she wasn't ready to marry again and he left for L.A. without her :)

David was a nice guy but he was also very clingy and needy. Of course, Ann didn't help matters. She treated him like dirt much of the time and he took it. ohno: I read that Richard Masur came back for an episode several years later; that should be interesting to see.
They didn't seem to make that good of a couple. She needed someone with a stronger personality.

Much as I like Richard Masur as an actor, his character was a wimpy guy. :p

If you remember the two part episode that paved the way for Richard Masur's departure was when him and Ann were going to get married the issue of kids came along because he wanted some of his own and Ann was done. He began caving in to her and she said no. She realized, as well as he, that the relationship is over and it was unhealthy because they both were needy and clingy to each other. Ann admitted that she replaced her ex-husband with him and he knew and allowed it. It was the tone for the rest of the series because it was originally about a divorced woman getting out on her own for the first time with two teenage daughters with no job skills nor knowing how to take care of herself without a man to do that. The character went from her father's roof to a marriage and he was controlling as well.
Yes, he did a guest starred shot in 1981 and it tied all loosed ends up between him and Ann. He realized he could not go back home and we saw that both Ann and David grew up and matured.

I really like Richard Masur as an actor too. I can see why the character had to be written out because she had to move on from her divorce, but it was still sad nonetheless.
Random info: I remember a few years ago he was president of SAG.
