I never saw the first few episodes of "Wings", so I'm wondering if someone can help me with this....

In various episodes, mention is made of Brian having had a chance to work at NASA, but something happened....apparently Brian "screwed up" somehow and didn't succeed at the position, or didn't GET the position to begin with.

Just what WERE the circumstances behind Brian's NASA career?

I have no idea which episode this is mentioned in... but I remember I think it was because he brought a date to the shuttle simulator.

I'm pretty sure that's from the first episode. And I was gonna post that myself, but I couldn't remember what it was he brought a date to.:crazy:

I could totally see Brian changing the re-entry calculations as a practical joke or doing something like pushing all the buttons on the main control console so they make a happy face.

I have a Brian at NASA question too. What exactly are the requirements to become an astronaut? I think in the first episode, Joe says something about how Brian could have been the youngest astrounaut ever, and in another episode, Brian said he was invited to NASA. I could understand if Brian had his Ph. D and M.D., a couple of patents in the works...but Brian really hadn't done anything, as far as I know, that would make NASA want him to become an astronaut. Unless they just wanted him work at NASA, and Joe just assumed it was to be an astronaut. I know Brian is extremely smart and got a full ride to Princeton, but he dropped out. So basically he's a smart, but lazy guy, who knows how to fly planes. Doesn't make me think NASA would want him to join up.

You don't have to have a PhD or even a degree to be an astronaut. Someone with exceptional piloting skills can be a shuttle pilot. It makes sense that they usually do take doctors and such on missions to perform experiments in zero gravity.

I just looked up the requirements at NASA's website, and they said that even to be just a shuttle pilot, you need at least a bachelor's degree from an accredited university in engineering, biological sciences, physical sciences, or mathematics.

My only guess is that NASA was considering him while he was still enrolled in Princeton maybe? He must have been pretty young when all this happened, because by the time he was 22, he was already married to Carol and out of Joe's life.

I had no idea a pilot needed all of those skills! Then again it makes sense if you think about it - the pilot is essentially a part of the crew. Maybe Brian was a custodian at NASA. :D
