View Full Version : Choosing your children?

I watched a show about this today. I know you all have heard about these people wanting to pick the gender of their kids, and being able to make their children smarter, and prettier, etc. What do you guys think about this? Its a huge controvery between scientists. Some people oppose it because of the obvious morally wrong aspects that go along with it. I don't think we should be able to do this, but scientists predict that by 2010 people who are rich enough to have this done, will all have genetically altered kids. And you know what would happen in the world? There would be a ton of kids that all looked exactly alike. Little blonde hair, blue eyes, intelligent, beautiful, and atletic kids. Its just wrong. We are all perfect without having our parents picking what we look like. Plus thats God's job to pick what we are going to look like.

I dont like it. The only thing I wanna know if and when I get pregnant is the health of it and the sex-- I need to know ASAP whether its a boy or girl.

This subject is handled pretty well in the recent movie, "Gattaca," which shows one very unpleasant possible future in which everyone is judged mostly by their DNA profile. There would be some benefits to being able to do this, but if you want to see how it could go horribly wrong, see that movie.

Yeah. I can understand wanting your kids to be healty, and to be the gender that you want, but being able to pick their eye color, their iq...etc, thats wrong, in my opinion.

I think it's awful.People shouldn't tamper with nature. To me,it's on the same level as cloning.

Oh yeah and I think ti is wrong to pick what your kid looks like. liek in my head I have a certain idea of what i would like my kids to look like, but like what leah02_06 said it's Gods job to pick that.

I agree. I think that this cloning and genetic engineering stuff is all wrong. It's like people are focusing too much on appearance other than what is inside. And, how would a kid feel if their parents ever told them they were genetically engineered or genetically altered? They'd probably feel horrible and question whether or not their parents really loved them for who they were.

I think mankind would be better served if scientists could figure out how to use gene manipulation to say, eliminate disease or birth defests rather than help make prettier babies.

However, if they can do something about making kids less bratty, I'm all for that.

Can the cells still be edited after the woman is impregnated? Anyway- the only time this could be used in a positive way is if one parent has a disease that has a chance of being hereditery- so it can be eliminated, no looks, behaviour or anything changes- just elimineting life threatening diseases. This is an evil concept- everyone would be getting kids that have the ideal image of what the parent wants them to look like- it's very similar to the time Hitler tried to sterilise people to create a perfect concentrated human race with all the same features. In the UK at the minute channel 4 has a show about cloning, showing proccesses and soon the woman will be impregnated- I'm still watching to see what happens

How awful. People should be happy with what their kids look like so matter what. If they let that happen everyone's going to be perfect...no one would be considered special for who they are.

As for the genetic diseases, though...I agree, it could be something useful...but other than that I think it's a really bad idea.

It's wrong...if they start doing this then we'll all be the same and we'd all be perfect... life would be even more boring than it is now!

I think it was something like it had to be done in a laboratory, and then the women would be "artificially inciminated" with the baby that was created by the scientists. So the baby won't have any traits or features of their parents. Its really, really wrong in my opinion, its just messing with God too much for my liking.

I too believe that it is up to God to decide what the child will look like, how smart he/she will be etc. I personally wouldn't even want to know what the kid will look like before it is born. I would like to know the sex but that's about it. Everything else I would want to be a surprise. I don't have kids yet but I think part of the joy of raising them is wondering how tall they will grow up to be, if they will be athletic or gifted students. Why would someone want to know all that before the kid is even born? IMO that takes half the fun out of raising them.

I think that's just shallow. It sounds like the parents won't even love their children if they aren't a certain sex or if they're disabled or something. I want my child to be healthy - I don't care what it looks like or what sex it is.

If you're a normal person, you'd love your child just the way they were, regardless.

If I EVER had a kid (which I never will), I'd only want to know the sex of the baby for one reason- I wouldn't know how to decorate. I wouldn't want to decorate the room blue and have my shower gifts be boys stuff and then have a girl, visa versa.

yes this is very wrong. like leah said GOD makes us the way he wants us to be.....by changing that we change our individuality..our look on life...it would be like we were looking in at a world of perfect little ppl...and thats not what we are at all....sure we would all like to be pretty, but when that child grows up he may not like the altered look, and may turn on their parents for making that decision on down the road. so i say let God's will be God's will and we should accept it for ourselves and for our children and be happy with it.

:rotflmao: that siggy is hilarious!

But on a more serious note, the whole thing about picking out what your baby will be like is completely wrong.
