She had a very interesting life, including ambassador among her jobs. David 05-17-2003, 03:41 PM oh cool. Thanks I also found out something interesting... that people in this one company were almost certain she was just a small adult that looked like a kid, and that they felt that the Shirley Temple was cheating her way to fame. IownTheDivision69 05-17-2003, 03:42 PM I thought she was the ambassador of some country somewhere.... lol czecleslovakia [i know i spelled it wrong] but yeah, thats the country. i know ziss cuz my friend did a report on her when we were in fourth grade *shrugs* lol. *InThisMoment* 05-17-2003, 03:43 PM Originally posted by SomersCompany3 oh cool. BrandonS 05-17-2003, 06:07 PM I've heard that when she made all those movies as a child, she knew her lines and the script so well that when any of the adults would forget a line, she would prompt them. She was one talented little girl! She also had a stable home life and parents who kept her well- grounded. There has been nobody like her since! :) She was born in 1929 which would make herabout 74 years old! My mother (who was born in 1928) idolized her in her youth!:D Brandon 05-17-2003, 07:13 PM Originally posted by Penny Lane She was one talented little girl! Crimson and Clover 05-17-2003, 08:40 PM i used to love Shirley Temple. Mijada 05-17-2003, 09:09 PM Originally posted by Brandon actually, she was born in april 1928. they made her a year younger in hollywood. I remember seeing an interview with her a couple years ago and she was saying that on what she thought was her twelfth birthday her parents sat her down and told her that she was actually turning thirteen. She spent her childhood thinking that she was a year younger than she actually was. I'm remembering back a lot of years now, but I'd say "Heidi." I thought the interplay between her and her gruff, elderly grandfather was very sweet. Montana Ponine 05-18-2003, 12:50 AM I like the one where she sings the animal crackers one, lol....I forgot what it's called? I remember she twirled her hair and said, "Oh my goodness..." and it was the cutest thing! Lol. Bonnie Raitt 05-18-2003, 12:52 AM She's still alive but I think she has a different last name since getting married whenever that was. I just saw her in InStyle magazine a couple months ago when they showed celebrities in their homes with their academy awards. How can Shirley Temple annoy you? She was the best child actress ever, she was very intelligent and not to mention she was so adorable. Liza 05-18-2003, 10:51 AM I did a report on her back in highschool, (we were studying famous American women - some girls picked Martha Washington lol) Shirley Temple Black is most definately still alive! She's in her seventies, living in quiet retirement with her husband of over 40 years. She's the mother of three children, and a grandmother. She started acting when she was five, but Fox decided to announce that she was four. She won an honerary Oscar that year for her first big film, STAND UP AND CHEER - which put her down in history as Oscar's youngest recipient. Upon her acceptance she turned to her mother and said "Mommy, can we go home now?" She'd actually made a few short films when she was even younger, and she has memories of abusive directors and unfair child labor laws of the early 1930s. However by the time she had become a big star her parents were able to keep a closer watch on her and she had a lot of fun being so popular so young. Her father was a banker, and kept her money well-invested for her. She grew into a beautiful teenager (have any of you seen her movies then? She was flawless!) And David O. Selznick (who produced GONE WITH THE WIND) brought her back into movies when she was about 17. This was around the time of World War II, and Shirley actually was a war bride. She married John Agar right before he was shipped overseas. Unfortunately the marriage did not last. When he returned they had a daughter, but John's problems with drinking and other women ended the marriage. She dropped out of Hollywood again, this time to raise her children, and a few years later she met Charles Black (who ironically had never seen any of her movies). They married and had two more children together. Shirley had a children's television show in the 1950s but then seemed to leave show business for good. She ran for senate but lost. She was ambasador to Ghana (I hadn't heard about Czechloslovakia) and is still active politically, although no longer in office. (I only know this because my cousin works for the same organization.) ;) In 1998 she made a rare TV appearance at the 70th Anniversary of the Academy Awards. She followed it up with an exclusive interview with Leonard Maltin. The interview answered many unanswered questions, among them her real age. Shirley admitted that when her mother told her on her 12th birthday that she was really 13 she cried all day because she thought she'd lost a year. But then she went to school all proud because she was a teenager! She says her favorite actors are Tom Hanks and Robin Williams and says she feels very fortunate in that she's been happy for almost all of her life. Sorry, but you asked! My favorite movie of hers as a child is the one most of you are quoting: CURLY TOP (Animal crackers in my soup, etc) and when she was older my favorite of hers is SINCE YOU WENT AWAY. Penny Lane 05-18-2003, 03:58 PM Very informative!
