SAN FRANCISCO (May 12) - A lawyer who has spent much of his life enjoying Oreo cookies has sued Kraft Foods Inc. seeking to ban the much-loved cookies in California because they contain trans fat, an ingredient he calls inedible.

Kraft boasts that people have eaten 450 billion Oreo cookies since they introduced the chocolate wafer sandwich cookies with a creamy filling in 1912.

But if British-born attorney Stephen Joseph has his way, that culinary love affair will come to an end, at least until Kraft stops using hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oils to make the cookies.

Kraft calls the suit filed in Marin County Superior Court just north of San Francisco baseless but Joseph says he is taking advantage of a provision of the California civil code that holds manufacturers liable for common products if not "known to be unsafe by the ordinary consumer."

The ingredient is used in thousands and thousands of products. In an interview on Monday, Joseph said, "I am probably full of hydrogenated fat because until two years ago I didn't know about it. I resent the fact that I have been eating that stuff all my life."

I don't even want to know what the penalty will be for the Double Stuff ones...

I think it's unnecissary. Just because he believes he got cancer from eating oreos doesn't mean everyone else will.

All I can say is I've been eating Oreos for years and years and I'm still alive. I'd hate to see them be banned.

I think it is just so stupid and inane.What really needs to be done is to ban the use of trans-fatty acids in ALL foods,not pick on the Oreos,geez. :rolleyes:

How dumb. I seriously doubt that many people get sick from Oreos alone.

Well, Oreo's aint my favorite thing, but come on.. people need to start putting more effort into better topics other than Oreos got me sick and McDonalds made me a 2 ton Annie. Oy!

That is pathetic. Did anyone force-feed him those oreos? I don't think so. This guy is just as bad, if not worse than those people who want to sue MacDonalds and other fast food places for making them fat. There's something these kind of people need to do in life. It's called watching what you eat.

It's also as stupid as suing Mcdonalds(or wherever),for the coffee being too hot.I mean,HELLO,coffee is supposed to be hot. :rolleyes:

Yeah, I do too.

I heard about that today. I was also told that the trans fat is what makes the cookie crisp and without it it would be like a Little Debbie. I am also eating the UH-OH Oreo's as I type this, they're pretty good. No one's taking my Oreo's away.

I don't really like oreos LOL but come on that has got to be the stupidest thing :lol: so until someone dies from a sudden oreo attack...

If my father and grandfather were alive they would both laugh :lol: :lol: at this lawsuit. They use to pop Oreo's into their mouth until they left this earth in their late 80's.

My mom told me the guy dropped the suit because he made his point. So I guess Oreo's are here to stay.
