Do you consider shows that originated from a sketch comedy as a spinoff? Examples would be "The Simpsons" which started out on "The Tracey Ullman Show," and "Mama's Family" which started out on "Carol Burnett."

Yes I do consider those spin-offs. For that matter, The Honeymooners is the first spin-off since it was originally a sketch in The Jackie Gleason Show. I mean, if Maude is considered a spin-off of All in the Family (she was a guest star, I think for 1 episode) than certainly for the others.

Okay, I'm back with an answer.
In a spinoff, we see a character from another program in a new environment, interacting with new chracters. So whether you're talking about Frasier Crane going from Cheers To Frasier, or Mama Harper going from a sketch on "Carol Burnett" to "Mama's Family," it's still a spinoff.

I wasn't exactly sure because I'm always throwing the dictionary definition of a spinoff around, and it was making this difficult. The dictionary mentions secondary characters as part of spinoffs, and these shows that originated from sketch comedies, aren't spinning off secondary characters. What the heck, the dictionary can take a hike! It's unanimous! Spinoffs they are! :wave:
