View Full Version : A character that was not needed-AT ALL

Hilary was unfunny, ditzie, shallow, jobless, manless, materialisic, and just a waste of space on the set. She added nothing to the show. Carlton, Will and Ashley were fine, Jeffery was the man, along with Uncle Phil. Vivian was unfunny also but not as weird as Hilary. Who agrees. And if don't explain why.

I completely disagree for many reasons. The biggest reason of all being that the show was set in Bel-Air. Hillary, more than any of the other Banks children, was a product of being raised in that snobby, materialistic culture, and she was a good representation of the spoiled little rich girl who has her rich father wrapped around her pinky finger. I thought Hillary was a great character. Don't bash me for my opinions, because I'm not bashing you. This is just my opinion.

Hilary is my 3rd favorite next to Carlton&Will and I wish Will&Hilary got into more trouble with each other because the episodes where they had to rely on each other were pretty funny... especially the one where Will sings to Phillip and dance at the end of a episode. They weren't as funny compared to Will&Carlton but I enjoyed the episodes. If there was one that wasn't needed it would be Ashley..... I just found her annoying especially when she whines to Phillip about the problems she causes.Nothing she did was ever funny..

I agree, GeorgiaBoyJeff! Ashley was ok, but of all the characters on the show, maybe with the exception of Vivian in the later years, she didn't generate many laughs from me. But, it was kind of nice to see a Banks child that was somewhat normal!

LOL, so if they are beautiful, they aren't annoying? Cool. LOL, just playing.

I liked Hilary during the few seasons and didn't think she was a waste at all, but for some reason, she started bugging me after season 3 or 4. It was about the time her looks changed (did she get some massive work done on her?), that I thought she became annoying. I guess she didn't exactly change, because she remained the stuck-up, spoiled brat that she started out as, but it wasn't working for me after a while. I started to really dislike her. When she got that stupid-a** talk show, then she became a waste. I hated that time.

I thought the first Vivian was funny. Janet Hubert-Whitten played her with heart and soul. Some of her comments and attitude was comical to watch especially the episodes with her sisters. I thought Daphne Maxwell Reid was unfunny as the second Vivian. They could had done without her. If the show could not had worked out the issues with Janet then they should had killed Vivian off rather than replacing her. The difference in the two actresses that played her was different and the character changed when Daphne got into the picture. That was when I stopped watching the show.

Hillary wasn't very funny at all.... but she was needed to make other characters funnier.

Geoffery (I pretty sure it's with a G) was at his funniest with Hillary.

Geoffery was only not funny when around these characters

Ashely
Vivian

But he was a Riot around

Uncle Phil
Will
Hilary
Carlton

Exactly. Hillary also made Uncle Phil more funny. She added something to the show, without being funny herself.

Hilary was more of a supporting character in that she was really there to be a contrast for characters like Will and Ashley and provide humor in her interactions with others. Not all characters in the show were simply there for laughs. Vivian and Ashley didn't generate a lot of laughs either. But Hilary's interractions with the other family members provided for good comedy. Hilary was spoiled, self centered, and quite dense, but that was her role on the show, and Karyn Parsons played it quite well. I think her character was needed in the sense that she reminded the audience, along with Carlton, that this show is set in Bel Air. We needed that character who was spoiled, and Carlton doesn't give of that spoiled vibe as well as Hilary.

Oh, please, if it wasn't for Hillary, we would never have had the episode where her fiance proposes to her while bungee jumping but doesn't, well. . . . bungee back up! :spit:

I saw that character for who she was. . . . a one-dimensional cartoon who was good for a quick laugh. I think that her haters are taking her too seriously.

The analyzer... You say, that you can stand Ashley, but not Hilary, because Ashley is beautiful. But guess what! Hilary is beautiful, and Ashley isn't.

Otherwise, I think Hilary sure was needed. She was funny in her own spoiled stupid way.

Furienna

That's not totally true. Hilary and Carlton were both snobs, which is probably how they ended up on a blind date with each other. But there's where the similarities between them end. Hilary was a beautiful airhead. Carlton was more of a nerd type.

i so agree with you solomon on your choice! out of the entire family, i disliked hilary the most. she was so shallow, self-centred, spolit and materialistic. the only reason she was on the show was so we could laugh AT her for being so dumb. she was the most pointless character.plus she was a reversal of the so-called dumb blonde stereotype. if i was the writer on this show, i would've wrote her off

What about Will's folks, Uncle Lou Smith, Aunt Vy Smith-Wilkes, and Uncle Fred Wilkes?

Furienna
08-21-2007, 08:25 PM
The episode with Will's dad is one of my favorites. I actually first watched it on my own father's 60th birthday, which makes it even more touching for me. I like those serious episodes, so I do think Uncle Lou was needed.

Will's mum/Aunt Vi can be a handful, but she's mostly interesting. I liked her character too. People should just stand up to her more.

Fred Wilkes wasn't uncle to anyone on the show. But he was, what, Will's step-father AND father-in-law? Too bad that the Lisa storyline was suddenly canned, because I would have liked to see how that would have ended.

Johnny be good!
08-26-2007, 04:11 PM
No, because Will and Lisa did not get married. That made Lisa Will's step-sister, Hillary, Carlton, Ashley, and Nicky's step-cousin, and Phil & Vivian's step-niece. After Fred married Vy, he became Will's step-father, Hillary, Carlton, Ashley, and Nicky's new uncle, and Phil & Vivian's bro-in-law. Alot to explain, but I did my best. What about Aunt Janice and Uncle Frank?

to be honest, I see all of your points well.. hillary was annoying and drop dead dumb and gorgeous at the same time, but it was slightly humorous at the thing she would come up with..

for example: the episode where geoffrey's son comes (aka REV from remember the titans) she says how could the son watch his father serve people and do all their dirty work.. he says i always consider the source.. she takes it as a compliment.

so yes she is annoying but it gets a chuckle.. not from me ive seen the episodes 1000X...

THE CHARACTER THAT WAS NOT NEEDED .. AT ALL:

Nicky: it really screams out no new material when some 40yr olds have another baby. i understand the fact that it gave a new element to te show with how each other character played a role in his childhood, but it really wasn't needed. I am sure they could have come up with something else. i suppose the writers recalled what a great impact the show had with ashley's upbringing and going through her childhood (boys, sex, music, etc.) but this was cut short when they retired the show... we didn't get the same ordeal. he was finny and cute, but really not needed...

ANY THOUGHTS ON THIS KING?

thanks.

Well, the first Vivian got pregnant in real life, so they wrote her pregnancy into the show. And then, even though the second Vivian came, they kept Nicky as a character on the show and even gave him the usual sitcom-baby-ages-five-years-between-two-seasons treatment.
