View Full Version : Qustion the professer .:BF:. 05-07-2003, 11:53 AM Was the professers name ever mentioned? iDOhavealife 05-07-2003, 12:05 PM Yeah, in the first couple of episodes, the radio announcer talks about the shipwreck, and he mentions the names of everyone. The Professor's name was Roy Hinkley, Jr. .:BF:. 05-08-2003, 01:18 AM Thank you, i remember it now how silly of me. :) iDOhavealife 05-08-2003, 11:40 AM You're welcome! :D Steve Carras 05-18-2003, 02:08 AM Full names: Gilligan: Gilligan :D Professor: Dr.Roy Hinckley The Skipper: Capt.Jonas Grumby Mr.Howell: Thurston Howell the Third (III) Mrs.Howell: Eunice "Lovey" Howell Mary Ann:Mary Ann Summers GInger:Ginger Grant. NOTE: Willy is someimes give as a first name but it was long ago disproved that Gilligan was a LAST name. JWood201, you;re not the ONLY Courtney here any more.. Ex-Alley McBeal/Melrose Place now According to Jim star.. JWood201 05-18-2003, 06:00 PM What makes you say that it was disproved that Gilligan was his last name? Sherwood Schwartz swears that Gilly's full name is "Willy Gilligan." richheart 05-21-2003, 07:21 AM Willy Gilligan is what would have been used if they had ever needed to write it into an episode. According to Bob Denver. Rockapella722 06-02-2003, 11:08 PM i know his first name's willy, but i can just not imagine him being called that. honestly, can you? ficlopri 06-03-2003, 05:10 AM Schwartz also claimed all characters not known by their profesions (save for the Howells) on GI would be known by their first names. By that logic Gilligan is his first name. I wonder what full name Bunny (the character MaryAnn aka Dawn Wells replaced) went by. This Willy bit looks like an attempt to appease fans who want to know everything about their favorite tv characters. Maybe in the original pilot with Bunny as one of the castaways Gilligan's first name was supposed to be Willy. But there was no mention even in the pilot of that name. And it might been just a rough draft script to the Bunny pilot that Gilligan's first name was Willy. When they actually filmed the Wells-Johnson-Louise free pilot the final draft script they used probably didn't even list Gilliagan's first name as Willy under the list of characters. It probably just said "Gilligan". But even if it did the first pilot was miles from the regularly produced series and no relation to it. So it's 100% immaTERIAL. In summary : The Willy Gilligan bit although it has a bit of an original series foundation is not actually established and is really just an attempt by GI fands to know more about the characters. By more logical standards Gilligan is the first name of The SS Minnow's First Mate. No last name for him. JWood201 06-03-2003, 05:34 PM In all of the Gilligan's Island specials (Surviving Gilligan's Island, the TV Guide Truth Behind the Rumors, etc ...) Schwartz always is questioned about Gilligan's full name and always says that his first name would be Willy. Always. So, the fans did not make it up. I think the Truth Behind the Rumors special is supposed to air again soon - check www.tvguide.com for airtimes. It's in there - I swear. iDOhavealife 06-03-2003, 06:02 PM Courtney's right. Both Sherwood Schwartz and Bob Denver have said that, if the need for a first name for Gilligan had come up, his name would have been Willy. I don't think Bob Denver was thrilled with that name, though. I've often wondered, as a fanfic writer who pairs Gilligan with Mary Ann--as his girlfriend, would Mary Ann continue calling Gilligan by his apparent last name? I can't *bear* to call him "Willy", so I guess she will, in my fics at least, LOL. Hey, Mulder and Scully called each other by their last names--the fans hated it when, in the last season, he called her "Dana" once, and I think she even called him "Fox" a time or two. I don't know--I boycotted the final season, along with a lot of other X-Philes, LOL. Sorry, got a little offtopic: there, LOL. JWood201 06-03-2003, 06:34 PM Well, I'm gonna stay off-topic. How's the fanfic coming, by the way? **grins sweetly** I hope I can read something soon? Pweeeease? **pout** Hehehe! Julie the GI girl 06-03-2003, 11:29 PM heh, i know what you mean. in my story...they get married. and i just can't have her calling him by what is now her last name as well. i think she's gonna call him "Gilly." it's cute. lol ficlopri 06-04-2003, 04:06 AM Listen everyone. I didn't say it (Willy) was something the fans made up.I said it was a basis from the actual show's original production days. But it's a damn flimsy one. It wasn't in very many scripts at all (just one original draft of a single script) that the character of Gilligan's first name was Willy. And it was never spoken of on the air. It was a never really established never used bit of "info" on Gilligan. Even behind the scenes! Lovey's real first name was to be Eunice (that was truly established behind the scenes though like Gilligan's "other name be it first or last" it too was never mentioned on the show). There was always the matter of Schwartz claiming that all characteres not known by profession will be called by their first name (save for the Howells).By that logic Gilligan is his first name. 15 years ago in Joey Green's book on Gilligan's Island it said that Schwartz and Denver were in dispute over the character's first name/last name identity. Now they are in harmony, huh? Definitely one of them caved in to mega-fan pressure (to know more about the characters) and accepted this ultra-flimsy basis as a fact. PS One person thinks that in the ep when the Howells aren't married Lovey is referred to as Eunice Wentworth. She is, in fact I believe, referred to as Miss. Wentworth. No first name given. iDOhavealife 06-04-2003, 10:07 AM Hey, Courtney! I'm tryin', I'm tryin', Be warned--the fic is probably gonna come in segments. I was hoping to get it finished before posting it, just because I was having so much trouble with it (I was afraid of starting to post it, then not being able to finish it). But now I think I can finish it, so I'll post it in segments. Right now, though, the middle is all I have written! I'll get it here soon, I promise. Hey, Julie! I'll probably just have Mary Ann call him "Gilligan" or occasionally "honey" or "dear" or something. Who knows? JWood201 06-06-2003, 02:01 PM **sigh** Alright. I suppose I can wait. Hehehe. Liza 06-25-2003, 03:45 PM IMO, Gilligan doesn't need another name. He's like Hamlet - one name covers it all  |
