See the bold definition below.....
Anyway, Jenn- I believe I am Bi-Polar. I'm seeing my second shrink pretty soon. I wasn't exactly diagnosed with anything from my first therapist, she was a bit of a... nut. I've done so much research, and I have a lot of symptoms of both Clincal Depression and Manic Depression. I am a rapid cycler also. Sometimes it gets so bad I even think I'm crazy! I would probably fit into Bi-Polar II.. I'm not III, but I'm not I. If we ever talk on AIM or E-mail, I'll fill you in, cause there's a lot more to this.... I don't want to really get into my stuff here on the boards :)
And for Leah- Bipolar illness is a condition wherein a person swings between states of depression (low mood and energy) and mania (heightened, elevated, ecstatic mood and energy). Different types of Bipolar illness are distinguished based on how just how low or high people get. It's commonly called Manic Depression, and there are different types of it (I, II, II, IV)

ABlairican Pie 05-04-2003, 11:17 AM When I was a kid my mother thought there was something wrong with me (she's ALWAYS thought that...) so she took me to the University of Washington and had a brain scan done on me. They glued these little electrode wires to my head, had me lie down on a table and switched off the lights. They told me to close my eyes and I saw the COOLEST thingies in my mind behind closed eyes. All these patterns of light and color flashing and spinning...(like someone gave me a hit of acid:crazy:  )So the diagnosis was I had Borderline Minimal Brain Dysfunction (what they called bi-polar back then)...they made it sound as if there was something ALMOST really wrong with me...:( I was put on Ritalin for a while, and for years I didn't know I was like a lot of other people my age.
Speaking of mothers, anyone dreading Mother's Day next Sunday, too?

Btw, do you remember my AIM name from last year? I can't remember mine exactly. I might have to make a new one, if I can.

It means half-manic and excited and then very depressed.

My sister was once diagnosed as being Bipolar, but I wonder if it is a temporary thing.
For example, when my sister was chunky, she would defend herself and cop an attitude if someone picked on her (She used to get picked on a lot). When she developed, dieted, and became thin she was very self-conscience. I mean her attitude shifted and if anyone called her ugly or slammed her singing on account of jealousy, my sister would get upset, take it to heart, and talk about ending her life.
She wanted to see a psychiatrist to see if they could do anything for her. My Dad called the preacher at my church and since he is in the medicine field he asked if there was any psychiatrists he knew. The pastor said that he did not know one personally, but there are reasons chemically why you may need one.
My sister went to a psychiatrist and she was prescribed Zoloft to take. After a while, my sister did not need it anymore and stopped the sessions. We all taught her that if someone is hurting her or calling her names out of jealousy in her circle of friends, then those people aren't really much friends since friends are suppose to help each other out. When her confidence came about again, she has known to be authoritative and kind of stop the event from happening if she feels that something that threatens her feelings may come about. I hoped that that last sentence made sense.
Anyway, I think that there is a chemical reason for being bipolar. I also think that medicine along with the right influence in your life (the kind that respects you and really loves you) is the best thing to treat bipolarism.
If you need any more information, I can give you more, or I can ask my sister certain questions because it doesn't hurt to get information from someone first hand instead of reading about it in some book at times.
